FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

Thing is Garmin products last longer anyway, I've had Garmin marine kit on my catamaran and it's never skipped a beat. Friends with B&G kit always have problems with build quality and software update glitches. When I build my RV10 it will not have anything but Garmin for that reason - the best is worth paying for.

It’s impressive, for sure, and should command a premium price. But should a GTN-650xi unit alone for your experimental cost $12,500? Seems a stretch when you consider what else you can buy for that amount of money. But true market value is something only robust competition can sort out. Regardless, I appreciate their thorough testing regimen.

Man this was an awesome episode to watch. As software engineer and a student pilot it's inspiring to see how seriously Garmin takes their testing. I honestly had a good chuckle when the regression tester was talking through his process... "I've said we're not pushing this out right now, I need time to test it. Leave me alone, let me play with things and I get no pushback from management. There's no pressure on me to cut corners. It's 100 percent safety." Throwing a little shade at Boeing me thinks...

Absolutely. When you have an entire team that loves what they do and there's no pressure to "just get it out the door" it shows in the quality of the product. Great to see that's Garmin's company culture.

I would have loved an incredibly boring version of this, but instead I got one of the best industry interview/showcase cuts I have ever seen. It was almost too interesting. I sort of wanted some guy who speaks in 40 word sentences that are 50% numbers, acronyms and initialism to mellow things out a bit. "You see, IEEE standards suggests a plus or minus 0.22v variance on FAA and IATA certified LPC1500 microcontrollers and we managed to downclock the ARM chip 100 mhz and achieve a 0.05v variance, increasing total system life......". Your piece with Asobo from a while back was really good too. Good job to all you guys who shot and cut that.

6:27 I appreciated the fact that a lot of their equipment was first used in experimental aircraft, and then the FAA eventually allowed their use in certified aircraft. Clearly experimental aviation is constantly pushing all of aviation forward. I personally feel much more confident behind a solid-state artificial horizon rather than a vacuum-driven, 40 year-old model.

I'm glad to see Garmin tests their aircraft products so well... I wish they did the same with their consumer products. Way back when I spent $500 on two handheld GPSs (early eTrex series). The first one, claimed to be "waterproof", died instantly after being dropped in a foot and a half of water (and retrieved in a few seconds). The second died spontaneously at a few months of age, after only being used a few times, never under harsh conditions. Those were the last Garmin products I'll ever buy.

My Garmin wrist watch was replaced 3 times under warranty in its first year due to recurring water ingress problems that affected the display and in one case caused the battery to short which in turn tried to burn my wrist. Garmin navigation aids for cyclists are legendary for buggy software.

And most of "the goods" do make it into the public videos. The exclusive raw / uncut videos are a small perk I can offer the supporters. I pretty rarely even pitch the campaign at all, but the crowd funding campaign is the single largest pillar of support, more than any of the corporate sponsors, and the channel exists because of them.

If you think that room was something, check out the US Air Force's Benefield Anechoic Facility at Edwards AFB in California. It has the same RF absorption foam on the walls, except it is an aircraft hangar capable of housing the largest aircraft in the Air Force.

Had no clue that automatic autopilot engagement was a thing. All these kinds of things will take GA to Commercial levels of safety.

Amazing video!! Thanks for bringing us into & behind the scenes of Garmin's "Skunkworks" R&D Lab. I may have missed it if you mentioned it already but where is this facility at? Thanks again, keep the great footage coming!!
