FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

I used to fly gliders and when I was younger my dad was the chief instructor and also tow pilot at the soaring club. We had three Super Cubs back then and he was part owner of CF-KLL (before the dash moved left). I did a lot of back seat time in that plane. My dad was a Lancaster captain at the end of the WWII. Taildraggers were ALL he flew with the exception of a Cessna 172 here and there. Thanks Steve, for the great up close look at one of the most fun planes ever built.

If you have the ambition of flying the Spitfire, I've got an idea for you. My local airfield (Biggin Hill, South London, England) has a hanger full of Spitfires, hurricanes, a wartime cub, and a Harvard. They have a tonne of spits, including a new two-seater, very rare I know. With their wide diversity in aircraft (such as the Harvard so they may be able to teach you a little more), including the two-seater Spitfire of which there are only s few in the world, I think it would be a great idea to start your Spitfire dream there. If you want to check it out, the place is called Biggin Hill Heritage Hanger

Great videos as always Steve! At the end of last year my flying club's CFI noted that I was getting a lot of experience on the Piper Cub so he invited me to join the Stearman Club here in Switzerland. This is a club of roughly 12 mainly Swiss International Airlines pilots, of which my CFI, a retired Swiss International Airlines Captain, is the president. As far as I can determine they own the only Swiss registered Boeing Stearman HB-RBG (there are a few others flying in Switzerland but with foreign registration). They officially accepted me into the club a couple of weeks ago so I am just going over your Stearman videos again as preparation before I start training on the Stearman. I've managed a couple of rather poor landings in a Great Lakes biplane last summer and I flew in the Stearman a little over a year ago so I know a little of how tough it is to land such a plane so I am justifiably nervous but also excited about this new challenge. Anyways it is great to watch your videos to get a hint of what I have to expect ahead.

AMAZING ! What a great day to be flying back seat in that bird. I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT YOU KNOW JP !! I have followed JP on many flights in his plane while in South Africa ( with friend Louis Cole aka Fun For Louis ) and just this past week, Louis arrived in New Zealand, where JP met him at the airport and lent him a vehicle for the week... I had inquired on how JP was doing with his flight training, as I know he was looking to upgrade, but I didn't get any reply. Now, I know JP gets around a lot ( whether by bike or by plane ) but how in heck did you two come to meet ? Did he do any flying with you in Canada ? We all know that JP never wears shoes when he flies, but maybe that is just in the South African heat ... LOL Best wishes to both of you in 2016 from warm and sunny Florida ==== Ahh, I caught that on my 2nd viewing. Spectrum Airways !! Great choice JP !! Stay Warm :)

it seems to me that getting your 3 point landings down first would be good to acclimate to the new orientation of this plane then from that point you have a solid frame of reference to learn the picture for a wheel landing. is that a sound assumption on my part? it just seems that a 3 point is a pretty narrow target with definite feedback that lets you know if you have it while a wheel landing may happen ad any number of angles with your only corrections coming from a trainer a video after the fact or a bad landing/noseover.
@FlightChops
@FlightChops 7 жыл бұрын
+DrewLSsix - you are correct that we always start with 3-pointers. But wheelies are hard to get right because the descent rate and side load needs to be at a minimum or it can go badly on pavement. Have you seen the lead up episodes for this series working up to the back seat check out?

+Mark A this just in from Dennis: Airplane colour is 'Nevada Silver'...closest I could get to authentic military colour and still look a little classy.

+FlightChops Thanks. Nice looking bird and a lot of fun to fly. I will be doing the same once the project is complete. Maybe Dennis would like a vacation in SOCAL.

It will be some time. These planes are simply complex. I guess we could always go up there. There would be two of us. A nice grass strip would be fun.

Yikes! Why do you pull the prop through sticking your body through the prop arc? Even with mags off, an engine can still fire
@FlightChops
@FlightChops 8 жыл бұрын
+Alistair Hammond fair enough feedback, but I'm fairly certain I'm not strong enough to do it with out some leverage by being dangerously close to the arch - how would you do it - reach forward and arm strength alone? no way I could do it that way.

+FlightChops I suppose it's just an extra little risk from flying such a lovely old plane.

It was nice to have a camera on the mains as well as the tailwheel. Really great angles to see the wheel vs three-pointer landings. Also, the wind in the struts as you greased it on was sublime. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rM1neaaYyN-7cX0.htmlm31s

***** Thanks for checking! Every time I hear or see 0/0 it makes me think of the Martin Baker zero-zero ejection seats, safe ejection at 0ft AGL and zero airspeed. Sounds like one of those Air Force nicknames you earn and for fellow men gave you! Could be worse, I know of a guy nicknamed Capt. Poopy! I doubt that one is on the side on his jet! He was an F-4 back seater and made the mistake of telling his pilot that his stomach didn't feel good and he well.... filled his flight suit. Not the kind of thing to tell a salty ole pilot! He did a high negative pushover and what was in the bottom of that poor mans flight suit came rocketing out the top! I am an A&P myself. I work Experimental Flight Test fo Bombardier and work with a bunch of retired USAF boys, you should hear the stories! Couple few CAF guys here too. Keep up the great work! I am envious! I plan on visiting a local airfield here aptly named Stearman Field in Benton, KS. I think there is 6-7 PT-17's hangar'd there and I personally know the gentleman that runs the Vintage Flyers club. He was our company shuttle pilot. Going to get some seat time shouldn't be an issue! Lot of neat planes there and they put on a great little open house. Cessna 195's, Shenyang Y-7, Bell 47, lots of cool stuff. Another friend of mine has an MX2 and an original clipped wing cub that was an L-4 Grasshopper. I got to go poke holes in the sky with it a few years ago, fun fun! Give me a shout if you ever migrate this far south! I'll buy you a pint!

+mytmousemalibu Maybe "O/O" stand for "Owner/Operator." And to Mr. FlightChops - I really enjoy your videos. I don't fly (yet) but I study the books and view the videos. Yours are the best - very instructive and well thought out and presented. Always look forward to the next one, and thanks for the time and effort you put into this project!

+bvs Thanks so much for the freindly feedback! and regarding O/O - You're correct! This just in from Dennis: O/O stands for owner/operator...commonly seen on transport trucks and such. Since Miss Delish is a bit of a truck, it seemed appropriate.
