This channel has a criminally low number of subs for how good these lessons are. This is by far and away the best edited and most understandable flintknapping channel I have found.

This video singlehandedly changed my knapping game, I was relying on bottle bottoms only, thank you. Greetings from Peru

I cant believe i just found your vids but im glad i did you are a gifted teacher sir and we look forward to binging on your vids and living our knapping dreams vicariously through you. I have to ask and waste your time sir but we are recovering from a total loss uninsured fire and most all materials and tools are a loss. My 14 year old girl has been knapping with me for 5 years now. Is there a classifieds type market on materials and maybe used tools? Every penny is being pinched right now but i dont want my girls interest to be lost due to me. She loves the slabs/preforms you use for knives etc. Where can i find those and how costly are they. Weve got a few hammerstones one crappy flaker and an antique soldering iron bopper but materials are lean now and for a while so any direction you can point me is soooo appreciated sir. Keep doing your thing man we love you

I dislike slabs unless it is an ultra rare material for 3 reasons: I dislike the end result (I can spot a slab point a mile away) and I don't like using electricity to create an object that I make with a single blow by hammer stone or billet. Just learn spalling first and learn based on that practice is my best advice to newbies. I also notice that certain defects in the rock manifest when percussion knapping and spalling techniques are used, while slabs tend to hide flaws until it folds. I have a failure rate of about 2 per dozen bifaces I work down by conventional methods, slabs failed on me about half the time. I do enjoy your work very much and I learn from you! THANKS FOR YOUR TIME SIR!

Slabs are the best way to use the least material. They snap easier yes, but that just means there's more skill required in knapping them. Keep at it bro

@@tangled3349 I respectfully disagree. I have 5 additional years of experience since I posted this comment. I'm much better at spalling and bifacing than I was 5 years ago. I promise I can get way more points and blades by careful spalling of the boulder than anyone can get with a saw. Especially with obsidian because I can see seams and cracks and change my strategy without creating a lot of slabs with hidden cracks in them. My bifaces are much stronger and less prone to breaking than a blind slab. I'm 15 years of experience speaking. Slabs are inferior in every way.

Great video. I'm frustrated as hell! My friend is an accomplished knapper and recently gave me about 500 pounds of good 'ol Texas raw flint rock. All I have managed to do so far is reduce it to rubble! I can't seem to be able to spall any reasonably flat pieces. Anything I start knapping on seems to grow in thickness instead of getting thinner. Any suggestions????

Is it possible to have black glass slab that will look just the same as obsidian? I would like to know if fake obsidian looks just like the real one once knapped

Could you do a video making a larger point that would require flaking to travel a lot farther?
