Big Joe was a natural talent. His hit records on Atlantic in the 1950's were all produced by Jessie Stone. Stone wrote almost all the songs. Big Joe didn't make a lot of money during his big years because of contract problems.

And when you see him performing those songs live, the bands just play standard, boring arrangements you could hear anywhere. Good as the players may or may not be. Be great to hear those same dynamic arrangements backing him up on stage, that you hear on the records. "Shake, Rattle and Roll" is a good example, great record.

Big Joe Turner was such a talent and that band sounds like it's asleep behind him. They are barely accompanying him.

I agree, the people would know those great records, then come in and hear different arrangements, and, yeah , half asleep players. Sometimes in a live show you get wrapped up in the moment and don't take too much notice of bad stuff, but I think youda noticed that night.

How wonderful of you to remember Big Joe Turner. Today, May 18th 2016, is his 105th birth anniversary. Please check out my youtube channel honoring great African-American musicians like Big Joe Turner¸ Fats Waller, Sidney Bechet, Robert Johnson and James Brown, all born in the month of May.
