To everyone who thinks SRV was just flash and speed, just listen to how tasteful his solos are here. They fit the song so well it's hard to imagine another solo in place of them. Such an ear for melody and an amazing internal rhythm. We miss you brother.

Stevie defers to his brother and plays in the Dallas less-is-more style, very much like Jimmie, in his first solo.Very cool thing to do.
@skepchica Жыл бұрын
Jimmie was always a less is more player. He was a master of finding the note you didn't play. Stevie was on the other end of that spectrum. Something special was in the water at Martha's house. Lol

My older brother and I are both guitarists. We've both been playing since we were little kids. He started first. I used to sit in our room and watch him practice. I was 9 and he was 15, and already good enough to play in a garage band. I guess he could tell I wanted to learn because one day when I was watching him he said " Hey little bro, you want to be a guitar player, don't you?" I said yeah. All he said was "Right on, man! Right on! Then he got up and left. (Hey, it was 1971. Dude's talked like that LOL). A couple hours later he came back with a '65 Gibson Melody Maker and handed it to me. I said "Wow! You're going to let me use it?" He said "No! I'm not letting you use it, I'm letting you have it!". So, thanks to big brother I was able to start learning at 9 years old. We both went on to play in local bands and did gigs around our state. Unfortunately, to this day we've never played in the same band together. Its on my bucket list. I sometimes wonder if Stevie Ray and Jimmy have a similar story from their childhood.

Stiff competition- best. I wouldn't be dubious if I hadn't been right up next to SkyDog Duane Allman at this dinky little festival they weren't even billed at. Sly Stone and Family turned up as a surprise too.

Who the Hell can hate on Jimmie's playing here? That solo was a perfect example of how economy and tone, note choice and the space in between the notes can make for a far better solo than a 'watch me shred' guitargasm that was SO prevalent at the time this was taped (1987: think 'hair metal').
@fauxbro8 жыл бұрын
+jjstratford +1. Jimmie's tone is really clean here and it cuts through..............
@shearn6667 жыл бұрын
Plenty of room for blues purists & hair-metal shredders to co-exist in the broad church of music. Progressive rock has been around almost as long as electric blues now - both valid forms of music.

Spot on assesment.. I think this is a perfect example where Jimmy really watched what he played and made it super interesting because SRV was there in the wings. Interesting how Stevie seemed to tone his work down a little, because in this instance it wasnt all about him.

Saw SRV's first Colorado show back in 1982 ... back when music was real, people actually wrote, sang and played their songs. Greats are still around, but you don't hear them on radio - gotta luv the web, baby!
@garystackhouse578710 ай бұрын
You didn't hear them on the radio back THEN, either. Why can't we just appreciate good music without backhand passive-aggressive and undeserved shots at current artists? You DO realize there are TONS of GREAT bands and artists today who don't use auto-tune and are brilliantly talented.... and also that the music of the 60's, 70's and 80's was not all solid gold... In fact, the vast majority of stuff on the radio was CRAP... and whenever you forget it, just remember that Disco Duck was a NUMBER ONE HIT!!
