A while ago I finished my first ink swatch book in a personal-size Tomoe River insert: I thought I would walk you through the whole journal and talk a bit about the way it came about and why I enjoy swatching inks so much.

I'm just starting swatching and ink journal. My goal is to just go for it and not be worrying about establishing the perfect system and making it flawless. In fact, I'm making it a little messy and splotchy on purpose to relieve the pressure I put on myself. Thanks for the great videos!

Love this video. Thank you for sharing. I swatch in my Galen Leather notebook, col-o-ring and recently purchased the wearinguel swatch cards, makes me smile watching the lil Cheshire Cat face smile up at me.! 😂

I think the 52 Tomoe River paper is very interesting for swatching, because if the colour has complexity you can often see this on the other side, which I find fascinating 🥰

I enjoyed this, thank you. It’s always inspiring to see you ink swatches. I love to play with inks too…and even though I can find the perfect pen and ink combination, I’m always wondering what else I can come up with. The trial and discovery is a lot of the fun.

I recently swatched my illustration markers and coloured pencils on big A3 sheets of hotpress watercolour paper, when I use them I’ll look at the reference photo and sit and contemplate the swatches for a minute or so and let my eyes perceive the colours

HA - I too absolutely LOVE inks - and of course the pens they go in! I just uploaded a lot of my bottles (not samples) onto the Fountain Pen Companion and I knew I had a LOT but wow - I think I went overboard LOL... I am #8 in the number of bottles = YIKES - Oh well, there are worse addictions! I really like your creativity in the swatching - I'm not nearly so neat. Since I started cataloging them ma while ago I use Rhodia Reverse Books - I have 3 - one for Samples, one for Ink Bottles and one by Ink Color. I can fit 16 good size swatches on each page - nothing fancy - just squares with the names under them. It makes it easy to see what I've got and easy to look up different colors/makers. I swatch my "currently inked" which I do when I switch out an ink or clean, but I love to see all your swatches and all the ink personalities. Wow! Each one is so unique.

As I am rather a newbie regarding different inks, my swatching technique is rather simple. I swatch my inks on the Col-o-ring cards and the Wearingeul cards (I simply love the Chessire Cat ones!). And I also use up my TR paper from my old Hobonichis which I cut down to personal size and put into an old Filofax. I use one swatch per page and also write down when I used the ink with whatever pen. As I only started documenting my ink explorations since April, my collection is rather small. And as I am more of a one ink for one pen type, I will probably keep my collection rather small (*wish). On the other hand I am rather curious about all those beautiful colours. But having a big amount of samples rather scares me, so I'll have to regulate the flow! 😂

This sounds to me like a very elaborate system. Making art with the samples or passing on the samples helps with having too many.

I'm currently re-starting my swatches because a storm soaked my notebook through 😩 In my ink journal I Swatch ink samples and bottles and choose one or two to make an ink exploration that is putting the ink in different sizes and writing my favorite poem. I'm using a MD A5 codex at the moment and a hobonichi A5 for my currently inked.

@@seemownay It's a good thing in the end because at the beginning of the Swatch book i didn't know what I was doing 😅🫢 and then it evolved into something more methodical and it was easier to see the properties well. Now I'm applying the sort of sistem from the beginning and I'm having lots of fun 😊 I love cataloguing things.

Very enjoyable video! It was so satisfying to see the flip through and enjoy all the lovely colors. Right now, my swatches are on Col-o-dex cards, but I plan to create an ink collection notebook this winter. Once that's done, I can give away some samples that I don't plan to finish.

Loved the video! I always debate between a catch all ink journal or separate notebooks for swatch or ink testing. I liked the idea of gluing the pages on a separate notebook afterwards!!

I have to admit I am not methodical at all about swatching - I do when I remember. 😂 I have a Galen leather everyday notebook with 52 GSM TR paper in a traveler’s notebook that I use. I have the same issue with the bleed through! I have Col-O-ring cards too. It has been my desire to have an ink swatching day when I can methodically do it / make sure my entire collection is swatched but that has yet to materialize.

I swatch on TR 52 gsm, a Clairefontaine notebook, and a in a sketchbook, so I know how each ink looks on the different paper. Not for any reason except I just enjoy seeing how they work its way onto and into the paper. I also use an EF, B, and 1.1mm for each each ink on each paper. I drop a of drops and either blow the ink around, or use a bulb syringe. I get to see the shading, pooling and sheen. Some of the swatches feel like I need to wear sunglasses. Can you do a video on how you do chromatography?

I love your purpose for swatching on different papers. That's what I love too. I sure can - it's definitely a pseudo scientific process. As I'm sticking to the same rules and same setup but in a "not-lab" setting.

It was ok, but I wasn't overwhelmed. My first thought having it in a pen was that it is totally overhyped. It's an orangey brown and at the same time I had Earl Grey Tea inked in a pen and I loved it so much, so I think this also influenced my impression of Single Malt.
