A couple of weeks ago I won an eBay auction for 8 issues of "Gekkan PC Engine", or "PC Engine Monthly" from April-November of 1992. For me, these are really exciting to check out because while we did get magazines like Turbo Play, Turbo Force, and Duo World here in North America, the system just wasn't the market force here that it was in Japan, and the fact that these issues are well over 100 pages long is a testament to that.
I posted some pics on Twitter and a few people hoped that I would do a read-through with one. As we all know, I don't speak or read Japanese, so this isn't really a proper "read-through", and I also didn't do more than minimal research or record any gameplay footage, so that's why this video is over here instead of on the main channel. Quite a few exciting (for me) games are featured in the two issues that we looked at, so even with the language barrier I think these were a lot of fun to look at.

So glad you put this channel on the community tab. I had no idea you had a second channel. I know what I’m binge watching tonight. ;)

Nice! I try not to over-promote it on the main channel, but I also want to make sure that people know it's here.

These PC Engine focused videos on your channel at some of my favorite videos on KZfaq. Much like a lot of folks in the US, I didn’t have one growing up so discovering all of these great games is very exciting.

Thanks Chris! These magazines are gorgeously designed in layout, colors, illustrations, stylized fonts, (and of course, your erudite commentary). Really fascinating.

I know that TurboGrafx-16 / PC Engine is extremely niche content, but it's a niche that I am very-much here for. I've never heard of these magazines, and I thought this flick-through was a great way to get exposed to the PC Engine in it's prime. Thanks a lot for this video Chris, I'm looking forward to more!

Sushi X! One of the few things I still remember about EGM. I had to google who Sushi X was though as I never read about their true identity. One of the things mentioned in my searches was that there was a Taco X in Famitsu magazine. Hilarious if it's true.

53:43: Oh man! I see a Barcode Battler II! Of all places, my friend found one at a MacFrugals in the 90s! It came with no manual, but we found out by swiping barcodes that each barcode had its own stats and could fight one another. It also had some kind of port which confused us as pre-teens. Wayyyyy later, we found out it actually interfaced with a couple of Super Famicom games as well.

Have you considered using the Google translate phone app during the video to give you and the viewer an off-the-cuff Engrish guess for certain things about which you are curious? It could offer insight (with a grain of salt) into what a page might be saying if you do a similar Japanese mag look-through in the future. The translation will probably turn out to be be od,d since literal translation of Japanese is far from the actual meaning. As an example, the Japanese tend to use a word like _hard_ in a way like us Amercans use the word very. Conversely they use the word _soft_ to indicate not as much. I'm not a Japanse expert but I picked up these things in amateurish translation efforts. I always wonder whether you find long insightful comments like this worthwhile. Sometimes I feel like people who run channels don't care whether someone actually digests the content in the video. I think we can all benefit if we actually pay attention to things :) Random, I know, but I'm trying to talk to you on the level.
@CGQPlus
@CGQPlus 3 жыл бұрын
I did exactly that when I did a read-through of a Japanese Mega Drive magazine in the main channel. Like I said in the intro for this video, this is a flip-through and not a proper read-through. The translate app is awesome, but it does slow things down.

I disagree about GamePro's reviews. They gave plenty of games 2.0 across the board, and some categories even got 1.0 and 1.5.
@CGQPlus
@CGQPlus 3 жыл бұрын
I shouldn't say "never", but what I've gleaned from reading GamePro is that if a game doesn't mostly get 4's and 5's, it sucks. like more than one 3 on a game review is a HUGE red flag.

I'm not trying to be rude, but why didn't you use google translate to understand what is being written down. I know it is not 100% accurate, but it would give you a rough understanding about what's being said.
@CGQPlus
@CGQPlus 3 жыл бұрын
I've done that before, but it slows down the show if I have to keep pulling my phone or iPad out and waiting for it to translate everything. That's why this is a flip-through and not a read-through.

Pg 38 looks like a pachinko game to me. Lords of thunder might have been Kaze no sanda? or Sanda no kaze not sure what the grammar would be...sounds cool to me, but guessing to a native speaker, not so much. Kind of like how Japanese use English in their media to sound cool, but to us its just bad.
