Ive received a couple of requests for tips on how to flip your grip! The first flip grip I learned was in king pigeon, and wow was it an intense stretch. Not only do you need shoulder and back flexibility, you need hip flexibility of both outer hips and hip flexors/quadriceps as well.
Here are a couple of stretches to help you work more comfortably into this pose. Follow along with this video (recommended to compliment with "Backbends for Beginners")
What you'll need:
2 blocks, 1 yoga strap (or scarf/belt/towel...), blanket/pillows, yoga mat, wall
Pose sequence:
1. Seated spinal warm-ups
2. Extended Puppy stretch
3. Cobra lifts
4. Sphinx + hip flexor stretches
5. Seated Shoulder stretch with strap
6. Pigeon + lifts
7. king arthur hip flexor stretch
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
9. Pigeon backbend prep with wall
10. Pigeon flip grip with strap
11. Pigeon flip grip full pose
Flexibility takes time for the body to open up, be patient and concentrate on feeling the stretch rather than achieving the pose.

Janice thank you so much. There are many great yogis on youtube, but great instructors are few and far between. You are not just clear and precise, but you make it not at all intimidating for someone like me who never seems to have access to areas such as hips and back. You make it enjoyable and accessible, thank you very much for your great instruction and humanity.

24/11/22 done in the PM up to @14.00, I realized I really needed a wall to stabilize the pose. Thanks Janice for sharing your knowledge on the mat 🙌🏾

I've been struggling to flip my grip to do King Pigeon; been watching several videos and I still didn't "get" it until I found your video. Your explanation of palm like serving a pizza is VERY GOOD, and my brain just finally went "AHA!" (note: English is not my native tongue so sometimes I just didn't quickly understand) and now I could slowly work my way for King Pigeon. Thanks for the warming up poses too!!

I literally flipped my grip the third time I did this!! Of course I did other back bending practices but this was always my point of reference. Thank u so much! Never thought that was possible!

I have been working on my king pigeon for 9 months now. The process has been slow because of the wrong stretch on my side spine but your tips are really great I hope that after a few months I could get to touch my forehead and the palm of my toes even for just a few seconds. Will buy a yoga strap soon. Thank you so much.

Thanks, some great tips on refining this pose. Also, what helped me was staying in it for 10-12 long breaths and coming out slowly with a counter twist.

27/11/22 first time practice on king pigeon pose to the end. Well, I tried 😊😄😀. I still need lotsa practice against the wall and using the strap. I tried ' serving pizza ' hand placement for spine realignment. Incredible practice Janice ☺️ and keep it 🆙

I have been following you on insta for a while now and just yesterday y found that you had a KZfaq channel. Flipping my grip was something I haven't been able to understand until now. I have been practicing yoga for a year now and couldn't understand why I couldn't do this pose. King pigeon was actually one of my yoga poses objective for this year, and what do you know! I made it! The tips were really helpful and I can't believe I just found this, but also super grateful that I did :) Namaste! and please please keep posting tutorials!

That was fantastically fabulously informative, educative video. U are very humble and honest to mention mistakes u did during ur learning..all the tips were very useful. this posture is quite difficult and as u rightly said at the end a regular practice on all points u mentioned with lot of patience...very thankful for sharing it.. Yay!!!! Saved for my yoga day🤗🤗🤗 I would love to see a video (or more) on arm balances and how to build strength for them. I lift weights but i can't lift myself 🤷 Lysm❤️

Hey Janice - this is very useful. I have a slight problem on my left leg while doing the fold and pressing my butt down to get into position - it gets a bit locked and and doesn't go down as flexible as my right leg. So I end up folding the left foot a bit inward and then going forward with my arms. There's some blockage at my left butt and I'm not sure how to resovle this butt-calve blockage.
