In this video I show integrating the FLIR AX8 camera with my Raymarine network to monitor the termperature of my Detroit Diesel 4-71 diesel engine. Using the camera I am able to see the engine temperature and set areas of interest to monitor and set alarms to notifiy me if any of my specified temperatures are exceeded.

I picked up a bad injector on an engine when the other 5 headers were nicely blued from the heat while the bad cylinder was running somewhat cooler and was not blueing . Seeing the relative heat between the 4 cylinders will be handy. Early intervention is gold. Bus Greasemonkey just had a vid where one bank on a Detroit v8 got ruined when the thermostat on that bank failed.

Nice…. I would point one at engine and one at the electrical board where you have all batteries and relays and switches. Could definitely alarm if a short or overload situation occurs. Because if it overloads , heats up instantly and then pops…. At least you have a record of what popped and when. Great price of mind.

Nice addition since one of the greatest enemies of the Detroit diesel engine is heat (overheating).. It doesn't take a lot of time for a blockage or some other impediment to the cooling system for damage to occur in the Detroit. In general heat is the enemy off all rotating machinery. Those cameras are also an excellent troubleshooting tool for all kinds of equipment, machinery, electronics, etc. At around $1000 it's a bit on the pricey side, but the savings in repairs it may help prevent could end up paying for it.

@fredflintstone8048
@fredflintstone8048 2 жыл бұрын
@@JimLahey21 Detroit diesels are especially susceptible to overheating. Heat is the enemy of all engines but more some than others and it doesn't take over heating for very long on a Detroit to do real damage. In a marine application you typically have two cooling systems with a heat exchanger in between. The outer system uses sea water and it can be easy for that system to get plugged up with debris.

@dangar marine Welcome to the FLIR family. I’ve been working for FLIR for many many years. I’m happy to see our camera being used (FLIR also own Raymarine). I ocean fish too and I’ve brought my thermal hand-held camera with me a few times and it’s has been very useful. You can also use the camera to look for electrical shorts in your wires even though the wires are covered with insulation. Sure saves a lot of probing! Looking forward to seeing other uses from you.

Yup, exactly what I was going to say. Also a neat way to find bad (high resistance) connections, terminations and crappy contactors and switches and under rated or failing conductors. Lastly, and most importantly, they'll let you know if your Esky has a heat leak and you risk having warm beer. :)

In order to get an accurate temperature, you will need to set the emissivity for the camera. This basically tells the camera what material it is measuring. I'm sure you'll find a menu item for this. You also have to ensure you aren't pointing it at a very reflective surface, else you'll be measuring whatever is reflected in the surface :o)

I've got CAT S60 phone with in built flir camera. Got to admit hasn't been used that much, for work I do general domestic and electrical maintenance. We have quite a lot brick sometimes stone houses, about 130 years old from Victorian era in the UK. People always say they are damp due to black mold, the flir camera shows up the cold spots really well, hence condensation forms causing black mold to grow. From using the flir camera it shows it doesn't take much temperature difference for condensation to form. From this I can then tell tenants they need to use the central heating more. Have seen an inhibitor used in paint to stop black mold growing, suppose it's equivalent to anti foul (perhaps not great for your health??). Went in one house where all the walls had been painted with inhibitor, the black mold grew on the tenants shoes instead.
