Porters generic strategies is about how a firm can achieve a competitive position in the industry

Michael E Porter identified four possible competitive strategies in the book "Competitive Advantage" published in 1985 in order to achieve a better result than the competition in the industry. The model deals with four strategies, these are Cost Leadership, Differentiation, Cost Focus and Focus Differentiation. These four strategies should be seen as a continuation of Porter's Five Forces. But now it's specifically about how a firm can achieve a favorable competitive position in the industry.

Excellent! Is generic strategies considered as a tool for strategic review ?! If not what the the tools we we use to review strategy?

Thanks for your kind feedback. This model can be part of the strategic analysis. However, it cannot stand alone. I would probably do a segmentation analysis and also do a competitor analysis. You can find both models on this channel. Porters Five Forces and Segmentation. There is also the model of Osterwalder. I use it a lot. It tells me what I offer the customers, whether I can reach them and whether I have the right resources. The model is also on this channel.

Thanks for the explanation actually i am a distance learning student I a m currently working on strategic planning paper There are two main questions in this paper but I am getting confused about the answer What are the tools of strategic review? What are the tools for determining the position of the organization in the current market ?

Throughout my readings , I think that organizational structure ( functional structure, multi diverse structure etc are the tools to review strategy . On the other hand , porter five forces model or Mackinzy 7s models Are tools for determining the organization position in its current market

Some tools can both be used to describe a situation and then analyze the same situation. Use porter generic strategy - you place all the products in the model and use it afterwards to analyze where there is a vacancy where you can make money.
