I ran track with Florence, in 76,77 @ Jordan High School...She was so fast, we ran the relays and none of us was nearly as fast as her, but she was the Anker, and she'd catch up and pass where we'd lack in slow speed. .She made up..lol.....what an experience to have her on our team... Ben Johnson, Lance Armstrong, Marion Jones and countless baseball stars in the late 90s and early 2000s were caught and confirmed as cheaters. As for Flo Jo all her detractors have is speculation and rumors. Not enough to stand up in court. If you are going to accuse someone and try to butcher their good name you better have some solid evidence or shut up
@ComicPower
@ComicPower 4 жыл бұрын
@Speed Two you got no evidence other than hearsay and speculation. It would be tossed out in court. She died at 38 because she had epilepsy and had a fatal siezure. Bruce Lee died at 32 years old from a health issue too. But using your logic he couldn't be so good at martial arts his early death was from juice too.
@ComicPower
@ComicPower 4 жыл бұрын
@Speed Two you keep slandering her name with no evidence just more speculation that any court would toss out. Yes she retired early with all the endorsements in the world. Sometimes the greats go out on top and can kick back and enjoy the spoils of victory. Jim Brown may be the best American football player Ever but he retired just shy of his 30th birthday because he could make more money making movies without all the damage to his body. So why people who retire on top is up to each individual and once again Flo Jo died of epilepsy. That disease can kill if you are 8 or 88.

It’s a very considerable achievement in such a hotly competitive event. It’d be equivalent to Bolt breaking the world record in 9.4 or faster. The in race distance between the fastest and second fastest ever is large enough to warrant the term in my view. I also think if Bolt was as biomechanically sound as Flojo his world record time would be even more untouchable than it is given his turn over and stride length.

If you knew about T&F and how much distance can be covered in 3tenths hs you understand. Also the shorter the race the harder it is to knock of 100ths let alone 10ths. To all the hobby scientists on here : in sprinting you can’t just take a substance like HGH or steroids and be faster automatically. There’s no such juice . All sprinters can really do with juice is cut down drastically on recovery times, enabling them to train more. So it is a rather long term thing. More musculature will not necessarily make you faster either. Speed in short distance disciplines is largely improved by long term adaptation processes - tendons , ligaments, neurological optimization, meticulous cultivation of the fastest twitching fiber type. There is no quick fix. Unlike in endurance sports where there is much much more distortion, much more ways to cheat.

You are a fucking idiot. Steroids allow for supra-physiological adaptation of the body, hence why you can surpass your genetic limit while on them (see every Mr. Olympia ever). As for your talking about fast twitch fibers: steroids _help_ with that. Those are the muscle fibers designed for hypertrophy and respond best to juice. Endurance sports it would be harder to cheat at, as you can’t affect the cardiovascular system and slow twitch muscle fibers of the body as potently with steroids, at least I’m assuming. I don’t know if there’s any juice out there that helps with endurance sports, but I do know for sports involving power hormones definitely help. I’m not saying she’s on juice, although from some of these photos it certainly seems like that’s the case, but I am saying you’re absolutely fucking wrong claiming steroids wouldn’t help with sprinting competitions.

She is in perfect harmony and she beats everybody else till now, while being very feminin. Today's female runners, with big muscular mass, lots of weight lifting etc...(force focused) can't beat her. Flo Jo is about many things which name I don't know... hindues have a word for it. (something like flow) anyway She's the perfect balance of force and relax, and many other things. She is in perfect HARMONY!! stupid ppl will say she cheated (even when it's proven she did not) cause they think FORCE is the only thing. IT'S NOT!!! sorry Running takes skills!!! it's not just brutal force (that's for weight lyfting) many guys can have Bruce Lee's force. can they fight like Bruce Lee??? Noooooooooo... it's not just about force 2+2=4 wake up. how long a body builder will throw a ball??? Not long at all. relaxation and flexibility is needed to throw a long shot. *Flo Jo the best #1* without a doubt. and somehow I'm glad stupid ppl can't understand why she is the #1.

Her times improve markedly in 1987 at the age of 27 and then improve markedly again the following year when she was nearly 29... and then suddenly she retires . I used to watch Flo Jo when she was competing and she was considered a very good sprinter better known for her outfits than her running ability, coming on to the tail end of her career then suddenly BAM! 1988 and then she just destroys everybody for one season. I believe that she took drugs and retired real quick before she was found out. I can't think of anyone else that improved by so much in such a small period of time at the END of their career.

Conrad, Usain Bolt progressed from 10.03 to 9.69 in one season, that sort of improvement is way bigger than anyone ever had. Sometimes an improvement comes through sudden revelation, something ticks inside and the athlete knows the truth about running. It is impossible to understand unless you experienced it. I had that experience.

@@TheWayToWin Usain Bolt improved by 0.34 sec in one season between the ages of 21 and 22, at an age when you'd expect him to mature physically as well as improve through training plus his record of 9.58 is the fastest by just 0.1 sec to (Tyson Gay/Yohan Blake). Flo Jo improved her time by 0.47 almost half a second ( so your post is factually incorrect) and her time is 0.15 faster than the next quickest athlete ( Carmelita Jeter). Flo Jo's improvement came in her 29th year, when you would have expected her best years were behind her and then she retired. By comparison Bolt's world record came when he was 23 and he ran on for many years after that. Unfortunately all the women's records from 100m to 800m were set by athletes who were aided by drugs. Which is why those records have never been under threat- Flo Jo's records are now 42 years old. Flo Jo should have been setting world records (or close to it) in her early 20's - it never happened.

Flo-Jo was ahead of her time...the video was about her biomechanics, which was still superior to most male sprinters. She was tested extensively in 1988, *because* they thought she was cheating, and nothing was found, even with the Olympic drug testing "sensitized" because of Ben Johnson. End of story. Personally, I loved her flamboyance and style.
@japphan
@japphan 5 жыл бұрын
Not end of story. If the tests were good at detecting every substance that she could have used, which they were not, it is still possible that she used something the years prior to 1988. Also, a lot of the "unbeatable" world records in throwing disciplines are from that time, by athletes tested with the same methods, which are considered almost 100% a result of doping. This does not mean that she was not clean. It means that anyone stating that they know she was clean are either liars, stupid, or misinformed. Anyone saying that she was not an awesome athlete deserving of all respect is also stupid.

This is what delusion looks like. Most, it not all Olympic winners take PEDs. Weightlifters, sprinters, cyclists, swimmers, and so on...hell even Norwegien cross country skiers were caught using asthma medicine to help their VO2 max. Bolt, the Kenyan middle distance runners ALL use. The whole myth of the west African fast twitch and east African slow twitch dominance is just that- a myth. Also explains how a white German woman's 47.3 second 400m time is nowhere close to the 49.5 second winner at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

@@japphan - If you can't prove the case she took PEDs, the argument becomes a case of sour grapes. I choose to believe she was clean of steroids, growth hormones and the like, simply because I've seen what those drugs do to individuals, before and after competitions. Even the timing cycles for taking the steroids known in the 1980's had to be known to avoid random testing, and masking medications can only do so much. That's how the Germans got found out. What good would blood doping do for a sprinter? Growth hormone overage in a woman is more obvious than with men. My personal opinion is that she was on a somewhat different diet than her competitors. Like I said, she was years ahead of her time. The only thing in my estimation she could have took (in theory) was epinephrine to up her "fight or flight" response, cycled in such a way to speed up neuromuscular response. She ran like a gazelle, scientifically proven to be a unique specimen in running technique - man or woman.

In the 80’s, beating those tests was like taking Candy from a baby. Out of thousands of east german women athletes who competed under the state sponsored doping program, only 1 athlete got caught once in 20 years. In those days there weren’t out of competities tests. Flojo convienently quit the sport in 89 when it was announced that there were going to be out of competition tests while in 88 she didn’t mention quitting at all. But she was a sight to behold, beauty and strenght combined in a never seen before fashion. I’m glad i was a kid in those days and witnessed her greatness on the track, but i can’t believe she did it clean. I mean she decimated the most heavy dopingusers ever, they looked like beginners next to flojo. Ben Johnson got caught because he got injured close to the olympics and he thought he needed Some chemical assistance closer to the games. If he didn’t suffer that injury, he wouldn’t have got caught as he could have started his regimen with a safer timing towards the games.

This just sounds like a very long way of saying, "she runs on the very tippy top of her toes/balls of her feet," which is what you're supposed to do in sprints. If you think about it, it's impossible to have you knees together at the same time as the point of contact with the ground unless you're running on only the balls of your feet/toes, and doing that necessarily decreases the contact time with the ground.

I can see from the variety of comments here that that the real spread of opinion about her is wide, even in her home country. When an athlete in their late 20s suddenly makes such huge gains, there will always be suspicion. The sudden retirement, and the shock early death just added to that aura, if contemporary media coverage in my own country (Australia) is any indication.

As far as I am aware most world class sprinters turn over at roughly the same rate so those who’ve covered more ground in the air are running faster. This is one reason Bolt is so fast. He’s huge and his steps are longer. The weird thing about him is that he should not have that world class turnover at his size... but he does. Flojo has a visibly gigantic stride and is still able to spring forward and turn over at that world class rate as well. Much of that is pure strength. The ability to glide through the air farther than the competition and still power through a step without buckling the knee or braking with the heel makes her faster. That extra glide makes it look really smooth. Also to cite another example entirely, Phillip Lindsay went from a 5.5 to a 5.3 40 between the end of ncaa football and the nfl combine...just a couple months of training when he was already a leading div 1 player. So speed can very much be trained at any level.

I think the main reason for the "hate" on her isn't a simple: "She was so good it can be aonly explained by doping." It is more the fact that she was just breaking the top 8 for few years and then only for few weeks for 3 races she was god-tier. This is incredibly suspicious. Every athlete usually has "the season" when they go from top 8 to a clear winner, but you can track the continuous improvement from previous seasons and you can see the greatness in the following seasons even if they've gotten worst. And then there is Bolt who was basically unbeatable for 9 years straight.

@@africaRBG Bolt wasn't competing on 100 m in Athens. He was primarily focused on 200 m. If you check his iaaf profile you can clearly see how he slowly went from over 21 s times to flat 20 over the course of 3 years than pushed it down to 19,70 range in another 4 years. In 2008 he started to combine 200 with 100 and that is his year. I strongly advise you (and anyone) to actually look up the information you claim. It took me about 1 minute to check that you have no idea what you are talking about. I recommend you click threw his "results" on his iaaf profile: www.iaaf.org/athletes/jamaica/usain-bolt-184599 Now what progression Flo Jo had? 1981 to 1987 all her times where basically 100 - 11,00; 200 - 22,20. And then 10,54; 21,20 in 1988 and in 1989 she ended her carreer... Not suspicious at all. Also, "sudden" = "occurring or done quickly and unexpectedly or without warning". How is 4 years sudden? Also, also, 1980's are notorious for substance abuse and Bolt was running in an era when every other top sprinter was busted but he is clean (see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_doping_cases_in_athletics ).

Lance Armstrong passed 150 drug tests. Also, although speed can be trained and improved in every individual, I think that's fairly misleading because I would argue that you're biologically born with an upper limit, everything from height, weight, muscle mass, strength, power, lactate threshold, testosterone levels, hGH, can only be trained so much until you've reached close to the best you can be.
@judec4911
@judec4911 5 жыл бұрын

@SauceKingg
@SauceKingg 5 жыл бұрын
@@judec4911 well for starters, everyone has different amounts of different hormones, for instance testestorone, we aren't all born with the same amount. And as we know testosterone is linked to performance enhancement which is why people like to dope using that hormone. If we arent all born with the same amount that means some people have a genetic predisposition to better performance. Furthermore, studies done on VO2 Max, which is basically how well your body absorbs oxygen, have shown that everyone innately has different abilities. Although your Vo2 max CAN be trained and improved, it can only be improved to a certain extent meaning people born with a naturally higher Vo2 max will have a much easier time trainer harder, and performing better. 🤷 don't get me wrong I wish we were all born on a level playing field but, it's simply not the case.
@judec4911
@judec4911 5 жыл бұрын
The Lone Ranger Testosterone has been shown to be increased with a variety of activities such as short term abstinence, the consumption of certain supplements, and a high level of exercise, again, testosterone levels are not genetically limited, perhaps an advantage will be gained with baseline levels, but this does not imply the impossibility of increasing testosterone beyond another with a so called advantage. Also, with VO2 max, there is a lot of ambiguity as to whether genes do play a significant part or not. I understand what you say about the playing field not being level to begin with, but I know that the correct types of training, both mental and physical, can be used to completely override these genetic advantages. I’m not claiming everyone is born the same, but I don’t believe this limits people as to their potential, unless a genuine disorder is present.
@SauceKingg
@SauceKingg 5 жыл бұрын
@@judec4911 I respect and now further understand your position. But to me, if you aren't born on a level playing field that means it takes different amounts and levels of training (mental, physical, nutritional etc) to get to the same amount of fitness, in this case sprinting speed. If it was simply a matter of training regardless of genetic/biological predispositions, women should be able to train hard enough to be as fast as the fastest men, but the reason they can't is because they're physically limited (when it comes to sprinting) due to how they are biologically born. Similarly we are all limited to work with what we are given at birth. Sure you can diet and try things to increase your own testosterone but if someone with naturally more than you does the same thing, you can't catch them. Perhaps I'm wrong but that's why I said I would argue this, not that I know all the facts.

I thank God for this video! Every time I'd watch her run, I always felt her flawless, smooth & relaxed technique granted her supernatural speed. Thank you, narrator, for speaking truth. The evil efforts of Flo-Jo's naysayers haters, and critics to destroy her reputation & legacy have, thank God, amounted to absolutely nothing. Even in death, they couldn't bring her down. Rest in Heavenly peace, sweet Flo-Jo. You were uniquely gifted & crafted by almighty God, thru Whom all things all possible.

@@thenewyorkmimes5753 There are exceptions of course, but pretty much 90% of top sprinters are black. To this day, while hundreds of men have ran sub 10, out of all those there is only one white guy to have done it with legal wind. The cultural argument fails for me because of the variety of white majority nations which all have top black sprinters. If you really want to argue that American white kids don't want to run track, that's one thing, but is it really likely to be the same in Britain and all of the other countries in Europe which are majority white? Personally, I don't see why people can't seem to accept that white people are slower on average, it's not like there aren't already a lot of known physiological differences between ethnicities e.g- Scandinavian and Dutch people are usually really tall. Is it that much of a stretch that black people might be slightly better adapted to running really fast?

I'm glad people today are appreciating the fact that her running style which clearly looks perfect, even to the average person, is what contributed to her greatness. Seeing her run next to her competitors who ran like average sprinters, makes it clear why her times were so outstanding. I truly believe she was clean and did not cheat. HOWEVER, I believe her 100m world record was severely wind aided due to the broken windometer that day. She lucked out massively and I don't think any other female athlete will come close to that 10.49 for a very long time.

coaches and officials went to her after Seoul and told her to retire or they would reveal her drug use. FloJo retired immediately. how does one say that she spent hours daily of peak performance training without recovery assistance of drugs? when she revealed that she did 3000 crunches each night, another Olympic athlete said to me: she lifted in the morning, ran in the afternoon and had energy for an hour of core work at night? get her a cape or a drug test

Absolutely. The percentage that she took down the previous record--the record she shattered--her quick departure from the sport, and that four years prior to the 1988 Olympics she was not close to her eventual peak....her acne, muscle growth, changes in her face and head and deepened voice and her cause of death all add up to use of steroids. It's not possible for her to achieve what she did, when she did it without steroids. She got out before she got caught and before the technology was able to catch up with her steroid use.

I remember being stationed in Germany in the early to mid 80's, I ran track for one of our intramural teams. One day our team was practicing and Flo Jo ( a nick name that was not really worldly known yet) was practicing on the German track.She was known as Florence Joyner). A. Simpson and B. Morehead was the top stars. ( My sister competed against Morehead in High School. Flo Jo's body was more like a fine model's body. Approximately 1 1/2 years later I was stationed in Korea (88). Where the Olympics was held. Flo Jo's body was a mast of ripped large muscles. In the military we probably do more physical training then anyone in the world. Her muscles were like a man's. How did she get so big in such short time? I was pretty built and when I stood next to Flo Jo all that I can say is Damm!

I watched all her races and noticed the startling transformation of her body. I was also amazed at the speed she surprisedly possessed with that transformation. You can speculate that her transformation was enhanced by some very hard work. You can also be correct in saying there was some obvious help in acheiving muscles that most men in the same sport didn't possess. We know that growth hormones and other undetectable drugs were being used by all nations and athletes. There will always be suspicions concerning these super human efforts and transformations. Wish it wasn't so.
