13:00 This is the key to float fishing for coho right here folks, a balanced float at the right depth. You need to have your bait slightly ABOVE the fish. The bright fish will rise to bite, your float will plunge, you'll get a good hook set. Also, you won't snag up on the bottom. Excellent video for the newbs and something for the beaks to learn from.

You should also mention using split shots on your leader to help get your bait in the "zone"....you can use a little longer leader and the split shots help you know if you're at the proper depth since they are less likely to snag on bottom.

I am going after work to attempt to get all the stuff to set up our poles and hit the river first thing. Thanks for the straight forward, clear and detailed video. Only thing I would change is to add a shopping list at the end of the video so it is easier to make a list for us newbs.

Your set up is interesting. I steelhead fish n my set up is a 13 foot, ultralight, soft action rod; 2500 series reel with 6 lb fluorocarbon; same type of float but about half the size; splitshot string down from the float spaced about 8 inches apart (weight size dependent on flow rate); and like a size 10 or 12 wide circle hook. Then for bait depending on the run; if high salmon numbers - pink spawn bags; if heavy steelhead run - small egg, beige / natural spawn bag about 18" - 24" below the splitshot string. For depth, approximately a foot or so above the fishes heads. They like to swim up to the food.

Coho fishing this season has been horrendous around the puget sound areas and local streams this season. I've only had 1 that I kept that weighed in at the 6lb range.. most caught have been small 2-4lbers.. I've let go the year-lings I've been lucky to land. Most every one I've talked to around the areas I fish, have shared the same experiences this season. And by the looks of the wdfw escapement reports, and the emergency rule update a couple weeks ago about 1 coho daily limits, it would appear I'm not alone in the struggle. Next up; chum fishing, hopefully I'll be able to recover my confidence in fishing for those brutes soon.
