Floating Shelves for a Shower - Bathroom Remodel Finishing Touch

For this video I needed to build some floating shelves for a shower in a master bathroom. Now that's a little unusual but I was able to use the solid surface countertop material that we installed on the vanity top to make the shelving. In another video I did on floating shelves called Strong Floating Shelves - The Strongest Option, I used all thread rods that were spun into studs to make the shelves. I followed the same idea here, but the design parameters of the walls were a little different in the shower so not everything applied as it did in the previous video but in the end everything worked out fine. The main consideration in making floating shelves for a wet area is to make sure nothing that goes into the construction of the shelves will be negatively affected by water. So, solid surface countertop material was perfect choice for this.

Hey Rusty.....here in the UK...I'm multi skilled Technician....from locksmithing, plumbing, carpentry, tiling, painting decorating, electrical wood verneering.....and if all tradesmen were honest we all have little frustrations......my farher who was a master locksmith....always said ....its all about getting yourself out of trouble and most importantly the finish .....that project my friend is absolutely stunning 😉👍 ..great video Rusty.....as we say in the UK. ...Lovely jubley. ....in other words. ....freaking awesome 🙂👍 🇬🇧❤🇺🇸....kind regards Danny UK

Great job, Rusty! I've always wondered about such shelves that were only stuck onto the surface, how that would be if someone lost their footing and put a hand there to steady themselves, if it would snap off and allow them to fall. This way with the extra support from the threaded rod, even though that wouldn't hold a person's full weight, it would take a lot more to pull it down, and probably enough to avert disaster. So, well done!

Another interestingly good video Rusty! You make installing shelves fun to watch. Bathroom looks way nice and interesting also. I'll be eagerly anticipating the release of them also.

Rusty - First, thanks for making this video! I am in the middle of two bathroom renovations - and it’s been a HORRIBLE experience. I am on my third contractor (first one was recommended by business associate - I was able to see his work in person - and it looked great - however, the issues I had were with the actual construction of the shower not being completed correctly. The second one sent over a newly hired employee - apparently failed to do a background check - employee had been in prison for over 9 years for fraud/theft/assault - we reimbursed $$$ for materials based upon fraudulent receipts - and materials never delivered to house).

Looks really good. But I don’t anyone that drills through tile with masonry drill bits, use tct tile drills through the tile only

Would be my luck the long rods wouldnt give any resistance and next thing you know its connected to the neighbors house....

Hey Rusty....the job looks beautiful and I really like the look of the solid material shelves. One thing though, (and maybe I missed this), but I don't see why you left to middle shelf hollow in the centre? Seems to me this would allow the shelf to droop and be weaker than if it is solid. Or do you do it so that in case you don't drill perfectly perpendicular you'll have some wriggle room to level the shelf?

Threaded rod unnecessary. The floating shelves can be secured to the wall by simply butting up the flat surface with some superglue, which will yield a stronger and more durable shelf. I have used this method many times.
