I’m trying to learn this as I start learning bass. I notice you use your thumb to mute the same string the rest stroke lands on. Isn’t that redundant? I wasn’t using my thumb while playing either of the 2 lowest (note) strings, just the top 2.

Hi Asar, thanks for commenting. I guess there is some redundancy there but my attention to my fingers is for controlling the length of the plucked note and timing of the damping of the plucked string. For my style of playing the timing of the end of each note is as important rhythmically as the start of the note even when I'm playing loose and legato.

@@unclemick-synths I’ve been looking at more videos and my own hand it looks like the thumb naturally falls close to the index finger so I guess keeping everything relaxed in its natural position is probably better than trying to eliminate redundancy by messing that up! I’ve just started learning this technique yesterday. Sore thumb!

@@asarcadyn2414 yes, it's important to have the hand relaxed and the thumb only touching the strings hard enough to stop them ringing. I remember the side of my thumb being mildly sore for a few weeks - particularly the side of the nail where it meets the skin. I'm sure you'll get the hang of it soon enough.

Thanks for checking it out Todd 👍. Yep, it's my main instrument. Not a virtuoso but I get by! 😀

That is how I play also. Thought anchoring my thumb was the best way, but I feel this way is much better

@@fingersmcoy definitely, so much more choice of tone.
