Journey to the Chateau

Patrick and Stuart share the "before" and "after" images, along with all of the details, of their first renovation project together. See how they rescued a flooded Chicago house, and turned it into an amazing and beautiful home.
Join Patrick and Stuart on their journey to find a neglected, forgotten, or crumbling château in France, and then continue to follow them as they work on its restoration, rénovation, decoration, and furnishing. Along the way, they will also create and share videos on their preparation for having gîtes for guests, and an event venue in their chateau (wedding, birthday, anniversary, organization or club meetings, retreats, etc.).

Hi there. We love our dogs. They are spoiled rotten (and that's great), so your idea is great. Thank you so much, we love input. The girl in the photo is Ginger and she'll be 10 years old next spring. We have two of her daughters with us too. It is a passion and once we get to France and have (hopefully) a chateau with the farm still belonging to the property, they will be living exactly like they did 200 years ago in Ireland. Of course they will sleep in the chateau and still be spoiled rotten. Big hug!

Sirs, my deepest respect and admiration for all the work you seemingly fearlessly took on with this house. All the mishaps and mistakes the builders made, sound like a horror movie!! It however completely explains your tremendous DYI skills which you put to great effect and results at the chateau. Your impeccable sense of style in the US, you have easily transferred to the chateau and adapted it to those surroundings. BRAVO!!!

My 1929 house has lots of problems that I will never succeed in fixing, but I would never, ever buy a modern house! My parents built one in the 1970's and it is (and always was) awful! You created a lovely home out of a mess... I am sure there were many lessons learned that will serve you well in the future chateau!
@patrickjourneytothechateau8243

Hi there Lawrence. I can relate to the problems. A home is never done. A friend once referred to their 1922 Tudor home in Oak Park as a bottomless pit that they throw money into that will never reappear....... The charm one gets with a seasoned building cannot be created. It has to age to perfection. Glad you liked the result. We learned a lot and there is nothing that we think cannot be tackled. I'm looking forward to see what you think about one future vlog about our current home renovation. It took 3 years...... Off to 18th century. As always, love your comments. Thanks!!!

Thank you kindly Janet. It was the beginning that showed us, that we work very well together. When we started the renovation in our current home, we expected it to go as fast and smoothly. Well it didn't. It took many years but we mostly enjoyed it and the results made us proud. This renovation pushed our skills, the current home pushed us even further. Hello Sarah. Thank you so much. We have complimentary tastes. Never an argument about interiors. Just an appreciation for the others style. I too had this sadness when old homes were destroyed and nothing was salvaged. The people who bought that house from us ripped out all floors and all bathrooms, the back yard and the rooftop deck...... Not that that touches my heart but they have 3 children and apparently do not think about their future. And we do know what we love XXXX

Hi B Wayne. Thank you. This was a good test run for our future chateau. Preserving what is historic and essential and at the same time introducing some modern conveniences is going to be challenging and fun too. As you pointed out, we did seek the compromise and we were happy with the result. The family who bought the house tore out all floors, all bathrooms, the roof top deck and back garden. We all have to do what we think is right. Very much appreciate your comment. Please also feel free to give us input, if you have any in the future. Cheers

Nice, clean renovation of a spec or builder's house. I appreciate the restraint of tearing out just for the sake of taste. So much waste otherwise. And I noticed a large wall of glass block in the landing by stairs. Glass block is slightly out of favor nowadays but certainly adds so much light and privacy. I'm reminded of the famous Maison de Verre by Pierre Chareau in Paris. So many walls of glass block but still beautiful and iconic after 90 years. Well done Patrick and Stuart. Very enjoyable vlog.

Hello there Ralph. We have always been mindful of waste and have both been raised that repair is always preferable to new. We did love the glass block wall. Wow love seeing your former residence! Stunning renovation. I hope it was featured in design publications. Scrap cement blocks in the yard is bad but blades in the fireplace?!! Builder seems like they were trying to booby trap the place. Malfeasance!? What a waste that the perfectly new condo was damaged because the water wasn't turned off. Thank heavens Patrick is okay from that. I have been through two hurricane floods living in apartments and had a 1928 house with a leaking roof (not flat though), buckled kitchen floor, and damage to kitchen and bathroom subfloors as well as cabinetry and a wall. Now living in multi-unit buildings, I am in fear that if neighbors don't heat their units properly (or if there are empty units), the pipes will burst even if I run my heat, drip my faucets, and open the cabinet doors. I can only pray. I am working my way through your videos and will be sorry when I am finished watching them. I did rewatch Chateau that Got Away to compare with the chateau that you did get. The chateau that didn't get away was meant to be yours.

Our current home took over 3 years to renovate. After being abandoned for 2 years and not heated and in addition everything still from 1967……. We renovated the huge kitchen and 5 bathrooms. Cleared almost 2 acres of invasive shrubs and dead trees. We split our own wood and did about 80% of the work ourselves and realized we can do a chateau. But we have to do it now and not wait till it is all set up (financially it will be a huge risk). And I am thinking about how to find someone who is willing to lend us their private jet so we can get our dogs to France in the cabin, not cargo. Would be great to get that for cost….. That’s stuff that keeps me up at night. 🤪😫🤪

@@patrickjourneytothechateau8243 The dogs! Now this is a hard one! When we where going to relocate to London we had 2 afghan hounds and 2 cats! We did the vaccinations and pet passports. But like you my stress levels over flying them all the way across the world to the UK tormented the hell out o me. The flight had to have a stop over to check on the animals, I wanted a direct flight and also to sedate them! neither was allowed. I even considered a ship! It turned out that unless you are a celebrity no quarter was given. To airlines our beloved animals , are nothing more then fright! The airlines simply have not got this one right. As I said all our beloved animals have now passed. My home backs onto crown land here in Australia which means it will never be built on or disturbed. I am with my "X" going to bury all our beloved fur family ashes here as this is where they where loved, and where happy. Yes, its a real torment. But maybe if you put the word out a miracle can happen. You certainly have my best wishes. This is one of the main reasons I wont have a dog for sometime. And I always have pairs to keep each other company. However that can backfire as well. But its the price we pay for unconditional love isn't it! Once I am truly settled I will buy another dog!

@@leighevans1394 That would be awesome. Darn COVID. That’s the biggest hurdle for us. We have 2 properties we are really interested in and right now traveling is difficult. It’s a bit maddening. We’ll happily welcome you at our chateau and any help (that includes suggestions), is so very much appreciated. Please be safe (two friends of ours, fully vaccinated) have COVID right now. Happy New Year to you two! 🥂🎊🥂

Great job, guys. The home that you had created was amazing. The roof terrace is adorable which reminds me of my plea. Please please put the good solid roof on your "must have" list in search for the chateau. All problems arise from the water getting in from outside. And according to British chateau owners good roof is a must as the repairs can be extremely costly and the expense can be put to the better use. As for the décor you can do it far better than most.

Thank you so much Ludmila. It’s a great comment and so true. Water is the big enemy in a house/chateau and on the other hand the source of life. How fascinating. I think we didn’t put that on the list because we one expect it but of course it is absolutely essential. It’s now on the list! 🥰👍🏻

Hi Angela. It was such a stressful time, since we had only 4 weeks from getting the keys to moving in but we did it (well, there was still another 10 months of renovations, but the big stuff was done). And we had full time jobs too. Looking back, it was great to do this together. Thanks for commenting. xxx

Thank you so much. Was our first test if we work together. The current house took 3 years to renovate. And add 2 more for the gardens. We are confident, that we will survive a chateau too. Although, we are a bit older now..... Hope all is well! xxx

I am so happy you like the renovation. We on,y had 4 weeks before we had to move. Ugh. We really liked the house. Now we are in a huge rambling Mid Century ranch. It was a complete disaster…. Abandoned for over 2 years. As well a house we love but we are ready for a big new adventure. 😍

Hello there. Thank you for your comment. We did ok. Was in a more transitional area. 6 streets closer to the lake it would have been about $300,000 more. It was quite an adventure. We will have a new set of issues and some new traits to learn. Can’t wait. Thank you for joining our journey. 💕

Very interesting going thru the before and after of homes in need of care and yes, many of us can relate...at one point, I was burning the candle at both ends making an older house in liveable condition as a single older working mom, however, this is how I stayed in the game. I love particularly what you did with the small garden areas. I am now in the most boring townhouse and I need to upsize again, to include a yard, at some point. Senior or no senior!!! I would also like a dog again; for sure, they can be annoying lol, seems most worthwhile things are...sigh. Your doggo looks very sweet. Patrick you are funny sometimes without trying to be ... Best kind of funny and best to laugh at life's frustrations anyway. Love your resourcefulness and look forward to going along on your journey. ❤️🇨🇦 Mariya

Hey there Mariya. It is funny, even as a child, when my parents took me to see a chateau, I always wanted to see what was behind the closed doors and had ideas on how to changes homes. For you as a single working mom working in addition on an older home for your family must have been exhausting. But as you said, kept you in the game and I bet you learned skills you never knew you needed. I do love your zest for life. Find your new challenge. That does keep us young I believe. Gardens can be overwhelming but they are the best therapy. As for our dogs. I yell a lot (they are terriers after all), but they are spoiled rotten and do not take me seriously. Now, I am glad you find me funny. Trying to see the glass as half full always kept me sane (ish). A good laugh or a good cry is all that is needed sometimes. Truly happy you are on this journey with us. Hugs

Hello Amira. When Stuart put this all together it was amazing how some memories came flooding back. I broke my finger as well... And thinking back it was hysterical how it happened. This was the foundation to show us what we could do together. I am confident that we will be creative when renovating a chateau while preserving the history. Can't wait. Thank you for being on this journey with us. We love input, so please don't hesitate to give us suggestions.

I like that you tackled the problems you found with determination and just took care of what needed to be done, it's so discouraging to keep finding problems, but you carried on and made the house lovely. I love the crystal candelabra behind you...did you get it at an online auction? ;)

Hi Susanne. I had to laugh out loud. It was at an auction I went to in person, before I knew there were online auctions and I could have wine while bidding. It was a chandelierI had to leave behind. but we'll find a few more once in France. Constant problems are frustrating. But: Keep Calm and Carry On! It's a good motto, after I have exploded in words that wouldn't be in a vlog. Thank you so much. This made my day. xxxx

OMG a liquidamber!!!! Holy cow they are so bad for building footings and water/sewerage pipes. Had to do so much repair on pipes at my mothers house because of a liquidamber tree!

We planted the tree on the opposite side of the water and sewage lines. I had an old house once outside Chicago and had an Ash tree destroying the sewer line. What fun that was 😂😂😂😂 We will likely plant one or two in the chateau grounds away from everything because they are just so pretty in the fall. 🥰

Hi Norm. The very large art print is an advertisement for the International Industry and Art Fair in 1911 for the 50th jubilee of the Proclamation of the kingdom of Italy. The version we have is the German poster. Good eye! Thanks for watching. Happy New Year. 🥂🍾🥂
