After we made the hardest decision of our lives to split up and fly back to our home countries due to the Corona virus pandemic, Marcel has purchased a new van in Australia to build our new future home on wheels.
This is the first build episode of the series where the underfloor insulation and sub floor is installed. Australia doesn't get too cold unlike North America, and as a result we can get away with a much thinner, or even no underfloor insulation. I have used 15mm Foil Board for the insulation and 15mm plywood for the sub floor. I won't be installing the final flooring until most of the build is complete so not to damage it while building.

Following this with great interest. You asked if there was interest in a video on understanding your design decisions, yes I would be very interested to understand your design thoughts. I was intrigued to see you had built the bed cross-ways - at 6 foot four I would not have thought you would have had the internal room to do this, but I am sure you have measured everything

I am very determined to save the space by sleeping widthwise and I really want a fixed bed in this van so I will make it work. My calculations say I will "fit" but I might have to sleep a little on a diagonal to me comfortable. But i'm happy with that if it means I can pull it off. The walls of the bed will have minimal insulation as to save space with 3 or 5mm over that to cover it up.

Hi mate, just a bit of advice, doing a van as well...you really need some kind of sound deadner over the wheel arches. making the box to go over is a good idea, and you have the form board. If you get insulation , even the earth wool, fill it inside that box over the arch, it helps with noise and insulation as the air gap otherwise its a wasted space....
@SALTYVANVENTURES
@SALTYVANVENTURES 4 жыл бұрын
Funny you say that, I drove around with it in this state for a couple of days and then bought some sound deadener. Made a big difference when driving in the rain and not getting the water hammering the wheel arches. It will be featured in a future video when I sound deaden the whole van.

I'm starting to convert the exact same van, and your videos are great! Lots of inspiration and really helpful ideas, so thanks. It seems like you are a master of SketchUp, dude! Any chance you would be willing to provide the empty shell SketchUp of the van? I'm currently working with a simple box, but it's not doing the trick for the bed area, etc. Either way, I hope to meet up somewhere around the world with our vans in the future. Cheers and keep it up making great content! Subscribed on both my accounts. Excited to follow along.

You had me at “sliding deck” in the back, as you’re only the second one doing this I’ve seen so far - and I planned this as well into my build a while ago. The width is limited by the wheel wells, unless you come up with a clever idea 🤔 can’t wait to see it all unfold! 🤗🇨🇦🇲🇶👌

I'm very determined to make this work. Fortunately this van is so wide the width between the wheel arches is 1.3m so it's wide enough for what I think will work.

Loving your channel. So glad I found it. Regarding the deck, sliding, yep I can do that. But one question I've just found after finding the right sliders....it's a shower deck. What or how are you dealing with water on the deck....the deck will have excess water on it from the shower. How are you dealing with that going back into the van

Yea this is the only van in it's size that has the extra high roof. I didn't want on of the extra long vans as you can't fit them in car spots unlike this one. Yeh it been tough with the forced separation but we are hopeful it will end soon.

Too bad that I did not find your video 2 weeks ago when I had to cut my plywood subfloor. I could have looked for a similar great tool like your contour tool. Oh brilliant idea of padding the wheel base boxes with insulation. I have not seen this after watching over 300 videos. Most people have been attachin insulation directly on the wheel bases.

Yes those contour gauges are great for van builds. It has come in handy in so many places with all the awkward shapes of the van. Good to hear i'm pioneering haha! I did end up sticking some deadener to the wheel arches but the boxes work great with the insulation!

Loving the channel mate...you can make a free contour gauge with a piece of cardboard (has to be the cardboard with the ripple in between) cut into rectangle shape or any shape you want and about 20 or so and and wooden skewers. Cut the pointy edges off the wooden skewers and slide them into the cardboard (in the ripple bit). It's dodgy but it's free...lol...keep up the good work mate. Thanks again

I’ve been wondering about screwing the wood planks into the floor. Seems like a lot of people just glue it down but it doesn’t seem like enough to me. Thanks for sharing!!
@SALTYVANVENTURES
@SALTYVANVENTURES 2 жыл бұрын
There is a good change that just gluing it down will allow the sub floor framing to come loose over time. Hence its a good idea to add a couple of screws in there to really hold it down. Don't forget to always check where your screws will pop out and spray them with a bit of rust paint too from underneath

Hey there! Great videos so far. As we are planning to buy just the same model and i am the same in height as you are i have a question regarding the bed. Do you want to extend the walls at the side? Because other way there wont be a way to fit in that bed at 6‘4? 😅
@SALTYVANVENTURES
@SALTYVANVENTURES 3 жыл бұрын
The bed length is 6"3 but because I don't actually sleep as stiff as a board so I find it a good fit. If you sleep on a slight angle you get a few more inches too. Extending the walls with flares was my first option but seeing how crazy expensive they are to get them to Aus (about 4k and unpainted) i opted for this option and i'm really happy with it so far.

@SALTYVANVENTURES
@SALTYVANVENTURES 2 жыл бұрын
I used 15mm standard CD grade ply. Reason being for the rigidity. Although doing it again i probably would have gone with 12mm just due to the close proximity of the floor studs i used. Yes i would say that 9mm would be much to thin for sure!

Not officially but I just chucked my barrier out today and had a bit of an inspection of the barrier. It really is just thin sheet metal, so thin I was able to fold it in half twice to throw it in a bin. There were no crossbars for support that would suggest it's use for structural support.

Hi. Trying to get through floor with pilot hole for diesel heater but after getting through wood it wont go any further. Do I need a different drill bit? My van is a fairly old Transit. (Already converted)
@SALTYVANVENTURES
@SALTYVANVENTURES 3 жыл бұрын
You will need a high speed steel drill bit "HSS" designed to drill metal. There are also different thicknesses of steel in the floor. The main floor wis 1-1.5mm sheet steel but if you drill through something thicker (2-3mm) it will be very hard. You need a sharp drill bit. For bigger holes for the diesel heater you can use a step drill ( they look like little Christmas trees), I prefer these over hole saws. Hope that helps

Screws were 20-25mm 8g, just enough to go through the 15mm ply and into the floor. The self drilling screws are measured I believe from the tip to the flush head (and there is no thread where the cutting bit is) hence why you man need the 25mm

@@SALTYVANVENTURES Thanks mate. It can get a bit overwhelming trying to figure it all out, but your videos have been excellent as a "how-to" resource. Pretty entertaining too. Cheers :)

@@SALTYVANVENTURES you say "just enough to go....into the floor". I think there's a real risk in going through the floor of the van and exposing the screws on the underside, which would risk water intrusion. On the other hand, if we are trying to go to pierce through the floor, then the screws just barely grip the floor. Both are a risk, so is it even worth screwing? Perhaps just the adhesive is sufficient and safer? I'd love to get your thoughts on this.

Just contemplating a build - I'm 67 and no carpentry experience - woo hoo 😮 - absorbing your vids like a sponge - cheers - just a question - when screwing the timber sheet flooring I'm assuming its going down into the timber strips of the framework for the insulation ?? - cheers

Awesome! I hope you are getting some use of of the videos then!. Yes the sub floor is screwed into the strips that were glued and screwed into the van floor.

being so tall how will you got in a width size bed?? our biggest design dilemma!!
@SALTYVANVENTURES
@SALTYVANVENTURES 3 жыл бұрын
The bed measures 189cm across, I'm 191cm. I fit comfortably as when I sleep I don't stretch out straight. And if you sleep on the slightest of angles you get a few more inches too.

Not true. They are wider around waste height. Don't believe what the specs say, measure one for yourself.

Also, what thickness is the ply you are using for the floor? Sorry but there is no mention of the ply thickness or the screw length in your videos - and I'm a noob.

@@SALTYVANVENTURES bought 12mm as you suggested because it makes sense. just completed the sub floor framing. one thing I learnt during the process was to BUY AN IMPACT DRILL. Drilling pilot holes sucks, but an impact drill will remove the need for them and speed the build process up considerably.

Could you just use liquid nails without putting holes in the floor?
@SALTYVANVENTURES
@SALTYVANVENTURES 3 жыл бұрын
Well you can but there is no guarantee the glue won't degrade and maybe move over time. Liquid nails drys fairly hard so isn't the best for a moving rattling van. For me the idea behind it it had the screws hold the wood down the the glue help and also stop any squeaking. It also solves the problem of the wood moving while the glue is drying and also having the wood dry flat

@@SALTYVANVENTURES thank you. Do you have to rust proof the holes? I really appreciate your videos, I'm a kiwi wanting to get a transit and do it out but I have no experience. So I'm looking for cheaper options to. Can I also ask where you got your sound deadening matt from please. Love your story.
