Upswing Lab coach Ryan Riske has been battling the one and only Ben "Sauce123" Sulsky in some heads-up cash games. Doug Polk and Ryan take a deep strategic dive into a hand where Ryan flopped the nut flush versus Sauce123 in a 3-bet pot.
This is just one hand, but Doug and Ryan have analyzed every notable hand from the heads-up battle exclusively for Upswing Lab members.

On one hand, it’s weird to see this level of analysis on a hand where the result was going to be sauce getting stacked 100 times out of 100. But I actually appreciate the ability to extract this level of content from the hand because I think most players would just skim through this hand as completely standard from everyone and not give it a second thought as to how it fits into the overall strategy.

Maybe not if the board runner-runner double pairs.

I love hearing this level of detail from players who think a lot about poker hands.

I forgot how sharp Doug can be analysing hands after all those years of just hearing the dumbed down mainstream polker hands analyses

KQ or KJ was my call because no one is going to bluff away their entire stack like that w/o thinking they are confident they have the effective nuts. I ve won hands like this and i have also lost like this as well. The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.

I am more scared to play low to mid flushes, because a fourth flush card could worry me.

Any reasoning why more connected flushes are less optimal to raise with than the disconnected?

Yes. When you have "connected high cards" as Doug said (such as AJcc or KQcc in this example), you block a lot of the lower flushes which you want your opponent to have. For example, if Ryan had AJcc here instead of A2cc, that would mean Sauce can't have any of the flushes that include the Jc. KJcc, QJcc, J9cc, J8cc are all impossible when we hold the Jc, and we want our opponent to have those hands. But when we have the lowly 2c to go with our Ac, we don't block all of those middling-high flushes. To sum that up: when you have A2cc, your opponent is more likely to have a flush themselves and thus you should fast-play more. When you have AJcc, your opponent is less likely to have a flush and thus you should slow-play more.

@@UpswingPoker Look at all the combos of cc sauce could have starting with KQcc. If this was heads up and he has any flush its all going in anyway. and what of 7-8cc?? never folding. People, even sauce make mistakes. Let them stack themselves for you. They are NEVER not betting a Flush or a flush K-Q high in the modern game of hyper aggression. So, you fast play and he folds. well guess what?? Someone is a donkey whale. you make suppositions not related to the hand. Jc is nowhere in this hand. "Sauce can't have any of the flushes that include the Jc. KJcc, QJcc, J9cc, J8cc are all impossible when we hold the Jc, " Riske does not hold a Jc?? I am an upswing member, sometimes you guys are goofy.
