Today, let's talk about the most central material of any painting : pigments ! I talk mostly about oil painting because it's what I do but the same ideas apply for all media : acrylic, watercolor, gouache (except for the drying time part).

PW6, PY3, PY35, PY43, PR101, PR206, PB29 and PBr7. I work quite a lot in thin layers so I prefer transparent pigments. I also like Genuine Green Earth for that reason.

For helping your next research, if you don't have it already, might be these video examples, showing examples of different paint "recipes" and how they might affect mixing colors in practice. Some companies use the same color name with different pigments, and that really made mixing hard for me in the start

Regarding my favorite pigments, i do love using single pigment paints ❤ Makes mixing colors consistent, for me, in acrylic as well as watercolor (i assume the same qualities exist in oil). Thank you

Burnt umber is the backbone of so many of my paint mixes! Perelyne red is such an undervalued intense red but has such a vast range of value potential! Raw sienna is very versatile as well. French yellow medium and Indian yellow are absolute staples.

Florent, thanks for your great videos! I now use a palette from cesar santos for portraits and figure painting. My most used colors are: titanium white, light red, yellow ochre pale (PY42) for skin color, raw umber, indian red, ultram blue, terre verte and ivory black all from winsor newton. For lips mix in cad red and for specific occasions cad yellow hue, all from WN. My favourite color is diox purple, so there are occasions where I mix that instead of black to get a deep purple color, but never apply that directly on canvas. Also I use gamblin colors before where I wanted the extreme punch of those pigments, because they're really strong. Very recently I used cobalt blue + titan white + ivo black for a blue verdaccio underpainting over a raw sienna background.

pb29-ult blue, py42 yel ochre, pbk7 lamp black, Quin violet pv19, cerulean pb15:3, pr122 magenta, pbr7 for r sienna and br umber, py3 lemon yellow, pr101 engl red, py35 cad yel med, of course PW4, naples hue (a mix), I now always used Galkyd medium to dry my paints faster. Works great, no color shift. I'm a pigment nerd, so ask me anything. There's a glazing medium too. Pigment strength depends on the Brand, I have LeFranc's that are just soup and student Lukas oils that are densely pigmented. I only choose lightfast colors. Lightfast doesn't always mean fade, it may change. ex- Prussian blue will get darker in sunlight.

I've taken to watercolor & gouache for the past few years, coming from oils and acrylics. I paint a great deal of people/portraits, plants and flowers, and fantasy creatures in a more surrealistic/realistic fashion. I prefer more of a botanical type of palette with convenience mixes. When utilizing acrylic and oil paint, I normally mix my own colors if I am expanding beyond a standard 12-14 color set, Ivory Black & Titanium White, a long with Venetian Red and Cobalt Teal. I must always have a Violet, or I feel like I'm missing a limb, even though I can simply mix one myself. 😉 My gouache palette is probably the largest, being very similar to my watercolor choices, only with a great deal of titanium white and, in addition, pastels. I'm pretty much in love with the variants of PR101! Oil & Acrylics: Sennelier & Gamblin Lemon yellow primrose, Azo or cad yellow deep, Azo green, burnt sienna, yellow ochre, raw umber, Mars brown, Venetian Red, raw sienna, burnt umber, Sap Green, oxide of chromium green, pthalo blue GS, Pthalo Green RS, sepia, Payne's Gray, ultramarine blue, cerulean blue, Turquoise, Cobalt Teal, Quin purple and/or Dioxazine Violet, Quin pink, Quin rose, carmine, trans Pyrrole orange or vermilion, titanium white, Ivory, Mars, or mixed Black. Gouache: Holbein Watercolor: Daniel Smith, Sennelier, Holbein, QOR, St. Petersburg White Nights, (I adore flockulating & sedimentary pigments, aka granulation and have taken to a hobby of studying the color chemistry of pigments.) Venetian Red, Indian Red, Burnt Sienna, (Raw Sienna, Carmine, Alizarin, Lemon Yellow, Burnt Umber, Oxide of Chromium Green, Sepia and Neutral Tint are lesser used but are on my palette,) Perylene Green, Sap Green, Perylene Violet, Perylene Maroon, Perylene Scarlet, Perylene Red, Yellow Ochre, Naples Yellow/Juane Brilliant, Quinacridone Rose, Quinacridone Magenta, Sennelier Red, French Ultramarine, Pthalo Blue (Green Shade,) Azo Yellow, Quinacridone Purple, Quinacridone Burnt Orange, Transparent Pyrrole Orange, Dioxazine Violet, Mineral Violet, Potter's Pink, Shell Pink, Napithide Maroon, Bordeaux, Turquoise, Cobalt Teal, Indigo, and Payne's Gray. *(Specialty colors: Hematite Genuine, Moonglow, Shadow Violet, Piemontite Genuine, Mayan Blue Genuine, Amethyst Genuine, Rose of Ultramarine, Rhodonite Genuine, and Green Apatite Genuine. I'm adding Hematite Violet, Lunar/Mars Black, & Sodalite Genuine ASAP.)

Hello Florent. I thought I would give you a list of pigments that I use. Recently I started using Windsor Newton's light red, inspired by Cesar Santos of Miami, and a popular youtube artist. In addition I have followed other artists' foot steps by including their recommendations. David Gray uses M. Graham paints. I use their naples yellow and burnt sienna. On my preferred list of pigments beyond these I would include vermillion, yellow ocher, um blue, perm. aliz., raw umber, sap green, ivory bl., cad. orange, cad red, titanium white, Windsor Newton's flake wht. replacement, cad yellow light and burnt umber. I tend to use muted colors in my work and I find that graying out my colors using these paints is quite simplistic. I hope this helps.
