Florentiner Marsch [Austrian march]

Julius Fucík's undoubtedly most famous and probably most beautiful march bears the title "Florentine March". He is his Opus 214. From his diary entries we know that the piece was completed on 03.12.1907 as "La Rosa di Toscana". Why he renamed it "Florentine March" on January 6 of the following year is not certain. But probably his publisher had a say in the matter and it is conceivable that political considerations played a role here as well. However, the "Florentine March" is an ideal model for Fucík's special march art. Both in the version for symphonic orchestra and especially in the wind music edition, the composition became one of the most played marches anywhere in the world.

This is probably the best March ever written, it manages to have the bold sound and strict tempo of a march, while also including a majestic and symphonic wind part. 2nd place goes to Fehrbelliner Reitermarsch.

This march is unique its form in multiple ways - firstly with the extended 16-bar introduction that has an extended pause following the loud solo bass drum. The 32-bar first strain is repeated for the third time following the pompous second strain with a countermelody by the glockenspiel and ventures into a new ending in the final 8 bars. Then the repeated trio has a bassoon (??) countermelody followed by a new fourth strain, repeated with a trumpet countermelody before the breakstrain which concludes with a ritardando preparing for the final reprise of the trio, what must be one of the most exciting grandiosos written - the piccolo countermelody, cymbal crashes, and of course crescendoing to the 24 fortes before the unique "double stinger" at the end. This orchestral version (I think the Czech Philharmonic) is excellent, the brisk tempo and dynamics really capture the spirit of this brilliant and substantial march.

@@lmaocetung look its not that simple. He was born in prague so do you still consider it czech? Maybe you even bring it down to his childhood district or village or even street or house he is from. You could also say that we are all humans so then the origin of place wouldnt matter. But we use cultural areas or we name towns, district, regions etc within the biggest entity of something like a country, which in fuciks case was within austrian culture at this time.

Glad to hear this done at a peppy tempo. In America, it tends to be played much more slowly - due, I believe, to the influence of a very early Telarc digital recording with Frederick Fennell conducting the (augmented) winds of the Cleveland Orchestra. ("Macho Marches" was the album name.) Given Fennell's sterling reputation, I suspect that most American band directors took (and take) that recording as their interpretive reference touchstone. Which is too bad, because plodding along at that slow tempo just sucks all the life out of it. (I've NEVER heard a Czech conductor take it at that funereal pace.) It's interesting that in his liner notes for "Screamers," an early 1960s collection of circus marches with the Eastman Wind Ensemble including Fučík's "Entry of the Gladiators," Fennell describes Fucik as "totally unknown" except for that one work. But in the liner notes for "Macho Marches" in the late 1970s, Fennell marvels at how prolific Fučìk was, observing that "Florentiner" is his Opus 214! (Exclamation point Fred's.)

Julius Fucik ( pronounciation Fuh-tcheek) was a Austrian-Hungarian composer of Czech origin. His marches are still played in Czech army. He had a nephew, Julius Fucik. a journalist and a member the resistance movement in Protectorate Bohemia and Moravia who wrote " Reports Written under the Noose" on cigarette papers. Other Fucik, Vit Fucik, was an early aeronautic inventor. Vit Fucik flew 5.6 km with his ornithopter next to Vodnany in 1760.

I’m curious about the original key. I have the American Star Journal 2038 version, arranged by M.L. Lake and published by Carl Fischer in 1916 (MCMXVI), which starts in E-flat concert, and the Trio in A-flat. This version sees to be one whole step higher. Edit: And now it seems I have the answer after listening to several other offerings. The original is most likely for orchestra, while the American market would want it suited to the American military band, hence a whole step lower.

That's not easy to say, it was the Austro-Hungarian Empire and ofc citizens from all over the empire learned at directly Austrian music choirs the Austrian marching style. Dr. Ludwig - I did not separate Germany and Austria Culturally, I merely pointed out, with Tongue in Cheek, that Europe is DIVERSE already, has always been and really doesn't NEED DIVERSIFICATION by Third "World" Parties. Where I grew up you could drive a few kilometers through the Forest into another Village, into another World. Even though we spoke the "SAME" Language (in the written form at last, not the spoken one) and belonged to the same Municipality. But I guess that the Germany has changed to such a degree that I most likely would not recognize the Country after being gone for almost 30 years now. But it's still my "Home" and my People and I hate what I see happening there. What the Traitorous Political, Social, Media and Academented "Elite" is trying to do.
