This is mind boggling. I grew up there in the 50's and 60's and this is the closest thing to being there I've ever seen!

It's easy to find videos of historically important events. It' s harder to find slices of everyday life where the people aren't playing to the camera. I love to see stuff like this.

Definitely Central Avenue St Petersburg. Lived there all my life. My sister worked at that McCrory’s. We were known for all the green benches along the sidewalks. Pause it at 6:15. The sign on the corner shop reads “St Petersburg’s Oldest Music Store”.

This is pure escapism...nearly eighty years ago but the images are so alive . Would be great to be able to step into the screen and be there . Impossible of course but this is the next best thing .Absorbing 🤗

6:15 the E. Allen Pianos states its 'St. Petersburg's Oldest and Most Complete Music Store' so there's a giveaway of where this is.

Phenomenal... St. Petersburg was a “new” city at this point, only a little over 50 years old. About 75,000 people lived there when this movie was made. Despite the massive growth in the following years, downtown is still semi-recognizable. Gotta love the complete lack of road markings, no traffic lights, it’s kind of a “free-for-all”. Everybody looks great too, all fit and well dressed.

I grew up there also. My dad co owned the appliance store ( Todd Hyatt) next to the music store at 6 th and central. They had a guy playing the piano every day at the entrance to the music store. My uncle Wade owned the barber shop on the other side of Central near BB’s lunch counter. Great memories!

For 8 minutes and 3 seconds I was in car heaven!

Even though I live in a country area of Australia I never tire of watching these videos. They are absolutely brilliant and really does show you a different world of motoring in a different time.

This is amazing...my grandmother in the early 40s met her future husband in one of those soda fountain type places in St Petersburg during WW2...he was in Airforce. She passed away a few years ago at 99...man I wish I could have shown her this.

I can't believe this is St. Petersburg.. It looks so incredibly different. I looks like a much larger, grander city up north. If there were no palm trees, I'd never believe this was Florida.

This appears to be a "background plate" made for rear projection in motion picture production. Many of these survived and are of historical interest because they are long.

By the cars seen here and there, it appears to be around 1947. I can only imagine how grateful those people on the street were to have the War done with. First nearly 10 years of a depression then nearly 5 years of rationed goods and unsettling war news every day. Thank you for posting this.

Another awesome video! Such a huge mix of cars with older and newer models. I will be watching this one many times just like I did with the others! It was kind of funny how the cop was getting impatient at that red light.

I’d like to comment on the colorization on this and other NASS videos. To me it’s perfect, especially on the cars. Some of the cars even show surface rust coming through weathered paint. It must have taken a long time to colorize these vids. Beautiful.

NASS, thank you so much for taking the time to restore these films and add the music and everything else that you do. These are so fun and exciting to watch. I have to disagree with you, however, that your colorization is not historically accurate. I am a huge history buff with a strong interest in this period, and from what I have seen, you have done an amazing job in capturing the aesthetics and color of this time, right down to the color of the cars to the people's clothing. Even if not 100% perfect or accurate, you have done an incredible job in what I know is not an easy task. Thanks again, and I can't wait to see more of your videos!!

Downtown St. Petersburg... wow, just amazing. I have spent a lot of time on Central Ave. over the years. It's so cool to see this footage! Thank you for posting it.

The park benches in the video were all green in St.Petersburg downtown. In the 40s and 50s St.Pete was the place to go when you retired. After a meal at Morrison’s cafeteria you would go outside to sit on a park bench to watch the world go by. Don’t forget to stroll down to the Million Dollar Pier and watch the fishermen and the pelicans.

Fabulous! Thank you for posting. The car next to the 40 Buick in the opening scenes looks like a 34 Lafayette. The camera car was obviously burning a lot of oil.

The camera man did a fantastic job here. At the end it looks like they were using a dashcam

I love these trips back in time.

Make sure that you saw the '40 Ford Pick-up with the U.S. Mail sticker in the passenger side of the front windshield. From the amount of business I would say it was 1946-47.

Thanks for posting these. These are awesome. I love old color footage. It's much better than black & white, although black & white films technically are in color, just not all of the colors. Hope you can keep posting more of these.

This is great, it's like time traveling, I loved the 1930's truck that had a US mail sign in the front window , all of the ladies were wearing pretty dresses, I haven't worn a dress in 2 years. Itd be neat to time travel there and go shopping at a few of the Department stores. Thanks for sharing, this was awesome!😊

This is St.Petersburg Florida Central Avenue . I grew up there and remember a lot of those old shops & green benches etc. No trolleys though born after that . I kept looking hoping to see my parents or grand parents downtown. Thank you for sharing this video it brought back a lot of memories as Downtown St.Pete has changed dramatically.

Though many here recognized this as St. Pete, I enjoyed playing history detective by researching the business signs shown in the film. It was the Hotel Alexander that clinched it for me…and the store with “Central” in the name. Absolutely love these restored film projects. Keep ‘em comin!!

The brilliance of this project is that it eliminates the otherness of the B&W era and we feel closer to recent history,the people walking the streets are as us.It is the nearest thing to time travel.Congratulations and Thanks.

i don't know where to start. there is so much going on in these videos that it is virtually impossible to just comment one time. the more you watch them the greater your desire grows to escape into those good old times. if you like revisiting these cultural periods and places, then videos like these will certainly provide you a way to leave this reality and runaway back in time to a place where people had a different lifestyle, cultural values and morals; take a good look at the streets, they are clean, there are the famous department stores like woolworth, traffic officers at every corner, cars follow the rules, people dress neatly, it was more peaceful and decent back in those days. watching these videos also is uncanny, you feel like you are there, you are able to live in the early 1930s 1940s 1950s all over again, and if you happen to be born post 2000s, then you are now able to travel to the 20th century and experience what it was like back then when your grandparents were alive, assuming that they are no longer living that is, luckily for many these videos are also documentary films that speak a lot about the culture of the 20th century, we are now entering the new millennium and already 22 years have passed since, time flew so quickly, 22 years and many of you can still remember when year 2000 happened! it is the same thing looking back at the year 1900 when it happened and then watching the first 22 years passing by quickly and then 1922 back then it seemed all new and fresh and young, it was the reality of that generation which also experienced a great pandemic starting in about 1918 till about 1922 and even further and then the prohibition period of the 1930s and the great depression. so to those persons living in that period that was their time to live. and by comparison you viewers on youtube now it is your time to live! 2022 will soon become history, and yes future generations will look back at your culture in awe and shock, studying and observing your very moves, how you dressed, what places and cities were like, the kinds of business and cars and things that you developed and the traditions manners and rules that you lived by. they will look back and wonder how life was like in those days, and that time my friends will be just around the corner in the year 2099 entering 2100 and till it hits 20122, a hundred years from today to be exact, a time when many of us will not be around any longer. yes these videos are also full of joy insamuch as they give you melancholy and to some extent they offer some hope, for in the end it is all about "preservation" of our human heritage through digitized technologies. Happy new year 2022 everyone! God bless you all. and thanks NASS for all the great wonderful things that you do to make us feel happy.

Love your work. Thanks for posting. Amazing how vibrant the downtown was before suburban malls took over. Useful stores and variety abound. Last time I was there it was mainly bars and restaurants, which isn't bad but less dynamic to be sure.

I'm so addicted to these old movies! I don't know why but I love seeing these little slices of people living their normal life from so many years ago. It's fascinating to me in some way to think we get to see just a small part of someone's life & probably the only filmed recording of them that still exists.

You make it seem we are all right there with the video action. 5:13-5:30 you even have close up shot's of two ladies in seperate automobiles, one behind the other. The young lady at 5:14 almost seems to be man-hunting as she drives by primping her hair like that ! LOL. 5:23 lady walking down the sidewalk. Woof ! Baby! Woof ! Fantastic footage. Trolley at 5:58. Thanks for sharing, great to actually see the Birney Streetcars running, I believe they were replaced by buses around 1949. Birney cars were common in most small cities up until the 1940's. The Tampa Streetcar currently uses replicas. I used to hang out on Central avenue back in the 80's it was almost a ghost town at that time.

This is more realistic than the effect they used for "driving" in movies from the era lol.

I love these videos because I'm a car enthusiast. My only question is who recorded these videos and for what purpose.

Even though it has been computer manipulated, the image quality is superb. The final output cannot give more resolution than was in the original black and white film. The film must have been of the highest quality available at the time. This is the 1940s and I'm genuinely impressed with this (80 years) old technology. BTW, who was the twit who gave a thumbs down? Why on earth would anyone do that?

This is Central Avenue in St. Petersburg, in what is now the downtown historic district. Based on the women’s fashions, it’s approximately 1946-1947. Great find!

The bit at the end is Rutlands Department Store in St. Pete. Rutlands was on the north side of Central Avenue so that segment is heading west, away from the Tampa Bay.

I didn't know St. Pete's was that built-up at this time. What? No security "grills" on the store windows? No homeless dozing on the benches? Women in summer dresses -- not yoga pants? No Starbucks? Those poor, poor people. (Irony.)

7:05 On the L side of the street, X-Ray Shoes. They had a fluoroscope that x-rayed customers' feet inside the shoes to check fit. This was before they fully understood the health risk of radiation doses and reproductive risk of shooting it toward the gonads.

It's so startling that it is eerie. I swear it has more presence than 4k.

Also when the cars stop I also kinda like the clicking sound of the engine

Is this film of the Miami metro area? Ft. Lauderdale? Upper east coast? Tampa or panhandle cities? Gainesville? Orlando? Some specific details would've been helpful. Nevertheless, beautiful restoration and a fascinating historical document.

The pace of life in this video/movie seemed so relaxed, so human, unlike present days' hectic, grinding pace. There were almost as many people in the calm streets as vehicles. It looked like the opening scene of a pastel colored noir mystery movie, and the cars were out of a Jay Leno dream. The traffic policeman wore a tie!

WoW! What a trip! The word lovely actually comes to mind... my parents went to Florida for their honeymoon. My Dad loves to tell the story about when they first crossed the fla state line and stopped at the rest stop/welcome center, my mom said well where is everything LOL! Like there was supposed to be confetti and a band I guess... they both said it was the BEST ❤️

Imagine that, some of these cars are still driving today, some are abondoned and rusty, but the most are scrapped and does not exist anymore.
