Gebahi Artworks wish I could see how you mix your colors. Mine came out way too dark after they dried. But I used acrylic on this tutorial.

Geri Douglas when using acrylics , remember to go one shade lighter to compensate for the color shift!! The only paint brand that doesn’t shift in colors is Winsor&Newton artist acrylics! Also I just learned how to do picture in picture with iMovie, so now I have to get a setup to film my palette so both will be on the screen for you. That’s coming soon!!

Paul Ross Sandilands thank you Paul! Your correct about the underpainting, the reason I didn’t do it was due to time , I didn’t want to make it too long. Although I have done it in the past for myself and finished the painting in oils! I wanted to try and do the painting alla prima so that they can see the result, but I ended up by adding more later when the painting was dry, Lol! But I believe they got the point. I actually reverted back to traditional oils and using Gamsol and Galkyd for my painting mediums in addition to stand oil, and so far the tacking up is happening at a good pace for me. But I did like the Cobra water mixable, it’s my favorite at this point! Thank you as well for the compliment!!

So, are you saying that you are now no longer using WMO, but have switched back to traditional oils? If so, what's the reason?

Chris W yes, I’ve reverted back to traditional oils because I’ve had few problems with drying times! Also I’ve problems with paintings feeling sticky/tacky for a prolonge time. I can’t figure it out and it drove crazy. And it’s not on all the paintings, just some! But Cobra claims you can use just water as the medium. But because of the inconsistency I kind of shied away. I may give it another try because they were convient. Now I use Gamblin Gamsol and Galkyd mediums to with my traditional oils, and things have been consistent!

@@GebahiArtworks cobra says do not use just water even for underpainting. They recommend from the tube or about15% linseed cause of cracking. They just say water cleanup and can mix the oil in a waterjar with water.

Cathy Painter thank you Cathy, I hear you, I’m trying my best to try and stay away from solvents as well, and find myself returning to acrylics to avoid any smells! But water mixables have their issues as well, such as staying tacky for a long time and I don’t know why!

Murray’s oil soap is good for cleaning the brushes as well!

@@GebahiArtworks I've had the same problem when I first started with WMOs. However, after many trials with the WMO and contact with the folks at Holbein and Royal Talens, I started using only WMO thinner for the initial layout and Holbein WMO Painting Medium, the stickiness went away. I only use water to clean my brush.

Eugene Rizzo I tried it that way as well, but I haven’t tried Holbein, but did try a great brand, Cobra WMO’s! Maybe there was still some water on my brush after cleaning, will have to try again and see! Because I’ve done test strips of paint with different mediums including WMO thinner, and still found it to be tacky!! Maybe it will not be as tacky for as long! Will test it again, thanks for the tip!!

Hi Alla, I would wait until it’s dry, which should take about 15-30mins. And then you can apply your next layer with linseed oil added to your paints!

Hi Alla, only 2 things I can suggest at this point, 1) use some mineral spirits on a napkin, rag, or anything and try to rub it out. Or 2) take 180 grit sandpaper and remove the parts you don’t like! I’ve done that before and just repainted over it again.

Piper Russell thank you Piper!! You are correct, I used Artisan water mixable linseed oil because it’s specifically formulated for that. There are other brands, but Artisan seems to be the most accessible one in stores! So when you see the W&N Artisan brand then you know it’s for water mixable oils.

I typically use Princeton brushes, also Silver(Brand) brushes, plus other varieties! The biggest, I think was a #9 flat brush. I’ll have to look at the video again.

Mickey Jackson for WMO’s I use a synthetic bristle such as Pro Stroke from Jerry’s Artarama, but you can use natural bristled brush. Only problem with natural bristles is that it’ll hold too much water! As for acrylic, I used pure synthetic brushes from Jerry’s Artarama, such as Powercryl by CreativeMarks!

Hello Yovette, yes, I would let the base layer dry completely! Normally it should dry within 15-20mins, and your first layer should be thin, not thick! I don’t use linseed oil on my first layer unless maybe if I’m painting alla prima, and don’t press hard on the second layer so as to not lift the base coat, use a softer brush in that case! Hope this helps!

@@GebahiArtworks Thank you for answering so promptly! Not many creators do. I do find the paint is dry to the touch after 20 minutes, but the oil actually stays wet for a very long time. I thought maybe leaving it a few weeks before a secod coat may help. I may try it just to see if that works. I hope you continue to do classes on WMO's. I subscribed because I think you are very good at it.

If you’re paint in one session, most likely your paint is going to still be wet! In that case, you can either scrape your name with the back of your brush, or you can wait til the paint is a little tacky or dry , and the sign your name. I usually add a medium wether it’s linseed or solvent to dilute the paint and make it easy to move the paint and sign my name.

I don’t think it’s the surface, I think it has more to do with how much medium you mixed with the paint, essentially diluted it too much, and especially on a smooth surface! That will make the paint glide instead of holding! Use less thinning medium, you only need very little!

That is correct! Except now I would use WMO paint thinner instead of just water! W&N Artisan has one. And you don’t need much!

Hi Marie, the difference would be the drying time and the covering power, meaning how thick you can add over another layer. Also let’s not forget color shift!

Thank you Elizabeth, the struggle is real!! When I use water mixable linseed oil or traditional linseed oil, I dip my brush in the oil first just a little, not too much, and then I pick up paint and mix them together! As for the paint lifting, it’s most likely two things, either you’re mixing too much oil, and or , pressing a little too hard on your brush! Start with a thin layer and then go with a thicker layer on top. Or you placed too thick of a layer initially and that’s why your paint is sliding around! Either you let it sit and dry a little or you can scrap off the excess paint. When it’s tacky, it’s in a drying stage with traditional oils, but with water mixable, it’s usually because there was too much water still on the brush and it’s not evaporating quick enough and it will be that way for a while sadly! That’s the downfall with water mixable oils. I’ve learned to handle it better now but there’s a learning curve! In your situation , I’d let the first layer dry before adding additional layers. Use a water mixable thinner with you paint for your first layer and let it dry and then use a little water mixable linseed oil with your paint for you subsequent layers! I hope this helps! I may do another water mixable oils tutorial soon!

I believe there is a lot of misdirection on media regarding water soluble oils, such as recommending using water as a medium throughout the painting process. Even I quickly realized that water as a medium is best only in toning, an initial laying down, or blocking in. It's great that an accomplished and professional artist such as yourself is not looking down on on w s oils and is providing some serious and correct guidance. Sherri-Lynn Case hi Sherri-Lynn, yes continue using Linseed oil, but if you’re using WMO you need to use water mixable Linseed oil, not traditional linseed oil!!

Sherri-Lynn Case fat over lean always applies in oils, except if you paint Alla Prima (in one setting)!

Use water mixable linseed oil only when you use water mixable oils to thin down your paints or to move the paint, especially stiff paints! Usually you use WM linseed oil with subsequent layers to add fat to the oil paint. Does this help?

Good question Roxanna, I used water mixable linseed oil, that’s why I was able to wash it off, you can’t use traditional linseed oil with water mixable oils! If you do, then you’ll have to paint as if you were using traditional oils!

But you can mix water mixable Linseed oil (or Stand oil) with W&N water mixable Thinner, just like you would with traditional oils! You can mix it 50/50 or 30/70 (30% Linseed or Stand oil to 70% thinner). The 30/70 mixture is for faster drying. Remember, more oil, slower drying time! And no I don’t use a drying medium, just the thinner. W&N sells their pre-mixed painting medium if you want so that you don’t have to do all that, Lol !! Like you said, it the Artisans Painting Medium.

Jennie French cobra is the more expensive of the two but has a nice buttery feel. W&N would 2nd in line for me, good coverage, a little cheaper, and readily available!

John Fisher Art kind of yes, I say that because the water can be used to thin the paint in the same way turpentine does, and dries the first layer faster. But you are right some brands don’t want you to use just water as your medium to paint with. And some brands such as Cobra water mixable oils says it’s ok, they even have a 13 part video on the subject! As an alternative, there is a water mixable paint thinner you can buy, Artisan by W&N has one and so do other brands. Make sure when you buy the thinner it says Water mixable!!

Well, both use water to clean but acrylic dries faster. Oils, wether water mixable or traditional, cover better and don’t shift in color. Acrylics change colors from wet to dry, slightly! Plus oils is more forgiving and blends easier. I use a lot of synthetic brushes!

You can use Gamvar by Gamblin, once dry!

Good question, no, I found it to be a bad idea! The reason is because the painting, when finished, will remain tacky for a long time!! And it initially changes the color you’re mixing, only to find out that it will turn darker in the end when dry. Because the mixture will be milky!

Cobra water mixables are really nice, but I’ve been told by many, many people that Duo Aqua is as good as it gets, and no one’s been disappointed so far! Something to look into, I don’t know your financial situation but I hear they’re a little pricier!

Good question, the problem I had was after finishing the painting it stayed tacky for a long time, like almost 3 weeks! And yes wether WMO or traditional oils, I would varnish the painting with a gloss, and I use Gamvar Liquid version, not spray (although you can). It’s optional.

@@teresagrigsby-rose8761 good question, you can use either or! But if you’re using water as a thinner, use it much less with each subsequent layers, or none at all. Kind of like painting with traditional oils, you don’t want to use too much turpentine thinner with subsequent layers otherwise there won’t be enough fat( meaning oil content in the paint) in the subsequent layers. So to clear things up a little, if you want to use only water to thin and move paint around use it sparingly with each layer, otherwise use water for the first layer and let it dry, and then use water mixable linseed for the subsequent layers! Let me know if that help to clear it up.

It takes very little water to dilute the paint!

Christine Tite hi, I used a 1/4inch Birchwood panel which I cut down to suze! Then I triple prime the panel, 3 coats on the painting surface and one coat in the back to prevent from warping! Primer is a personal preference, some use gesso, which is a minimum of 3 coats! I prefer using Kilz2 water based sealer/primer from the big box stores, in my opinion it seals better and has better adhesion properties, even if you use oils!

Christine Tite hello Christine, I personally use Kilz2 for my sealer/primer, I don’t find it to be as gritty as gesso, and sometimes I just give a “light” sanding. If sometimes I use gesso if I’m recycling a panel on the fly. If you find that Kilz2 is a little thick, you can dilute it just a little and give your panel a smoother finish, but don’t dilute too much!

Yes! Just like you use mineral spirits to clean your brush, and you can use mineral spirits to thin down your paint and apply a wash! Just have to watch how much you use. But the general rule is to use linseed (WM linseed in this case) or more fat with each subsequent layers! And by fat I mean oil!

@@GebahiArtworks Yes, Winsor/Newton WMO linseed oil was my problem. Go to the Wet Canvas site and look up W/N Artisan linseed oil. Lots of folks who were using it also had the same problem. I have no extraneous tacky problems with using Holbein Duo Aqua Painting Oil Medium with either Holbein Duo Aqua or Cobra WMOs. Acrylics has a few drawbacks as well, the worst of which for me is they dry so quickly when trying to paint En Plein Air. In my studio, I use Golden OPEN acrylics and like them a lot, especially when using OPEN Thinner and Acrylic Medium - not using water except to clean brushes. I find the color saturation to be good. Anyway, your work is outstanding and I appreciate the information you share. Be safe.

Eugene Rizzo thank you Eugene!! I’ll leave out the Linseed oil next time and test it out. The open acrylics are great but not as heavily pigmented as the heavy body acrylics, I noticed it when doing my darks and I use the same recipe all the time!
