Insurance companies are run to make profit. It is called Capitalism. Florida like California has been hit with much property damage over the years . California was first by earthquake, the drought which caused fires then heavy rain which caused landslides . Florida is having its turn by storm damage . Also residents and construction companies worked together to put in many false claims in Florida. The Florida government allowed the construction companies to take insurance companies to court and the insurance companies folded.

Then I did some snooping and you can Google this yourselves ,not only do the FPSC regulates the power but, natural gas , water, and waste water industries in the entire state along with some telecommunications !!! Now I know why when one goes up they all go up..... friggin jerks.....In 2021 they made 620 million in profits and 2022 they made 763 million in profits . @@TimothyCHenderson Yup, I ran a marketing agency for awhile and we did work for various nonprofits. They all have horrible communication skills. They're all staffed with incompetent diversity hires who do the bare minimum work for bare minimum pay. Their turnover rates are always stupidly high. It was only when I noticed their complete lack of standards that I began to question how it all worked. Turns out they just needed to spend dollars on marketing to meet budget laws, which can only mean they werent concerned about the message or the cost. I eventually looked up one of the CEOs and found her entire IG feed loaded with images of her on vacations in spain, italy, france, bahamas, etc. Then I found out that her nonprofit applied exactly the legal bare minimum of their donations to their supposed cause. Then I found out that find that very CEO was also engaged to a city councilman here in CLE. This was a Black Woman Owned nonprofit that was supposed to help innercity black folks. Turns out it was just a money-making scam that recycled grants back into the pockets of politicians, nothing more.

He begged Trump for his endorsement and fawned over him, but as soon as the richest man in the world began talking to him, he dropped Trump. Not even with assistance it was never the whole amount and they were forced to either forfeit money to evict the ones stealing from them or take the money and agree not to evict. The Mafia would be embarrassed by the tactics that the Insurance companies use. It is a protection racket that does not pay out. At least with the Mafia, if you paid for protection, you were protected from other thugs. Insurance companies always bemoan a one or two years loss but never mention the other years where they made huge profits. My advice is buy a block home with at least storm shutters below what you can afford, pay it off as soon as possible, then drop the insurance and then save the money for more than likely will just be a new roof. That roof you saved up for would be forced to be purchased after fifteen years even if you were insured. As far as fraud, did you know if insurance companies lose a lawsuit where there were legally responsible for a claim, they still write it off as "fraud". I would purchase flood insurance right now because in my zone, it is still reasonable.

The state of Florida has a lot of insurance loop hole laws that cause fraudulent claims. I worked in the auto SIU claims industry on the auto side. Basically you use a repair facility that doesn't work with or agree to the insurance companies rates. These shops collect these claims over time then sue the insurance companies. The policy holder names are being used in these suites unknown by the policy holders. Don't have experience on home owners side but imagine the same thing is playing role and building material cost have gone up dramatically. Litigation cost is likely playing a very large role in this.

If there are a lot of fires in your area, they go up; storm damage in another area, yours will go - they spread the insurance risk as it were. Although, my ins went up as well, only slightly, because of the damage from various people in the area who have had fires, although thank God, it didn't include me, but unfortunately, ins. companies all work together and they spread the risk of coverage. Hint: Don't file a homeowner's claim unless you have major damage. Forget about the policy details, your insurance is for catastrophic events only. If you have a broken pipe that costs $5,000 to repair, do it "out of pocket". If you are smart and have a high co-pay to keep your premium down, it would cost you at least $2,000, anyway. This is especially true if you are in high risk states like Florida. -Use your policy for nickel and dime stuff, they will cancel you.

Hint #2... Residents have been doing that for years and the insurance rates still increase especially after any hurricane. Insurance companies see billions to be made and take the money and run.
