I have some haul to share - a 1680 sampler from Nuremberg, Germany that has opened up an enormous detective hunt for me that I want to take you all on through Travels with Tricia episodes. The dealer who sold the sampler to me passed on a trove of research that the previous owner had assembled (in German). Some of it was accurate and some needs digging. Amazingly I was leaving for Germany to see Christmas Markets only two weeks later and the information took me on a huge hunt across museums in the city.

@triciawilsonnguyen The "Jacket Tour" was the most memorable trip I have ever taken. I still talk up what a fabulous job you did planning the trip for us. About a year ago, I did another program for my needlework guild using the images you organized for us on the hard drive. Brought back all the good memories.

Incredibly exciting! Thank you so much for all of your research into the German samplers. I can't wait to learn more!!! How they lived and why they stitched what they did (and how) is the reason I stitch samplers. I love a good story and your deep dive - with photos- is what makes my heart sing. Looking forward to all that 2024 has in store for you!🏵🏵🏵

Tricia I lived in Nuremberg when my husband was an American soldier stationed there. I actually visited the Toy Museum there and it is amazing if you collect or admire these miniatures dollhouses as well as other amazing toys. I am now living here again and next time I am in Nuremberg I will see if I can find what you mentioned as it intrigues me immensely. Thank you so much for sharing these amazing lessons of needlework of the past. I truly loved your episode in particular number three. The history in Nuremberg in so many areas is truly beyond words. Looking forward to learning so much more from you. Happy Holidays!

Christmas Baubles I could not resist..🛒🛎️ Wow the sampler information is so interesting!
@triciawilsonnguyen
@triciawilsonnguyen 8 ай бұрын
The Baubles ornament is a fast stitch too! Double fun. There is sooooo much more to come on the sampler information. I have researched now three big stories - Martha Edlin (17th century casket and sampler maker), Betty Bradstreet (Unknown sampler designer of Massachusetts samplers around 1800) and now this Nuremberg sampler tradition. In each one there are unknown women who were in business, influenced big events or were scientists - in other words - kinda bad ass ladies of the past. All involved centrally in embroidery. Their stories need to get out as we just have in our heads this overly simplified cartoon image of women of earlier periods. Women weren't doing embroidery to 'stay in their place' - they were doing it for other reasons Sometimes a bit subversive in fact!

Tricia, this is fabulous!!! - I have a couple of questions. What count is the linen? I assume that the threads are silk - do you have any thoughts on the quality of the silk? Do you think that the sampler was originally framed? If so, do you know when it was removed from the frame? Do you have any thoughts on how it was stored - - and how the colours have remained so vibrant? Has the sampler been cleaned/restored - or is it pretty much untouched?
@triciawilsonnguyen
@triciawilsonnguyen 8 ай бұрын
Hi Wendy - great questions and some I will have to answer in a future episode after asking the dealer and doing some counting. But you have hit a few nails on the head with your questions as I have already been (see episodes upcoming) to see a group of these from this same school and have their linen counts and examined the silk thread with the conservator at the museum. And they all had vibrant colors and weren't framed too. But I didn't see lots of evidence of creases to fold them. I will take your questions to the others just in case there are records and also put them with my overall questions that I have as well for future episodes (I am not home at the moment or I would race to count the linen) but the count is low - not too fine of linen. The thread is a two ply twist for several of the other samplers which really surprised me and we talked about that a lot because the 17th century English samplers of the same period were being worked in untwisted silk that they divided themselves (sounds like another episode!! I have lots of information on that!).

@triciawilsonnguyen
@triciawilsonnguyen 6 ай бұрын
HI Marcy - if you go up to the description and click 'more' there are loads of links for a bibliography. But you will also find that many things I talk about aren't 'in a book' but the result of pulling data in from multiple sources to make new conclusions - I am talking through the bits as I research them to write the book in effect. If there is a book - I do put it in my description section.
