Karen, thanks so much for this video and taking the time to demonstrate with tent stitch! After watching your "diagonal" series, I started a new full coverage in May (25 ct. Zweigart Easy Count, 2x1) utilizing the diagonal method and continental stitch as P Leo describes. I work all the stitches of one color in a 10-stitch row before parking. Using continental tent exclusively means that my "every other row"'s stitches naturally start in a dirty hole. This has truly not been a problem because there are only 2 threads in the hole I'm coming up in. Railroading the threads makes each stitch uniform and flat. I park almost exclusively in the same diagonal (below the current row) for thread control. There are some rows in this pattern with all 10 stitches a different color! All said, I am thrilled with the process and the result. Working in this manner has all but eliminated misplaced and missed stitches. The back is orderly (I'm not going to say "neat") because I don't wander off the diagonal very much. I am so grateful that I found your channel and FaceBook page before beginning this pattern! I would like to encourage others to try continental stitch on some scrap fabric or a margin. It definitely has it uses, say for landscapes or other designs with softer edge definitions or working with higher-count fabrics. I will be starting my first HAED soon, (Horsehead Nebula, Max Colors) and you can bet that the skills I've learned so far will be put to good use! Blessings to you -

True continental would alternate rows so thread on back has elongated threads on all rows. When stitching left to right direction you stitch top right to lower left. Stitching right to left direction you stitch lower left to right. This helps to make tension on each row alternate to avoid warping of canvas/fabric since each row negates tension of row above. Always stitching from lower left to upper right for each will tend to warp since you have no offset of tension. Also I don't see why you can't basket weave when cross stitching full coverage. Just a difference in thread parking according to your chart.(marking parked threads on chart or tablet will help). Still working row by row only in diagonal direction rather than horizontal. Principle remains the same. Another advantage of basket weave over true continental is you always bring your needle up in a clean hole and go down in dirty hole to avoid splitting threads.

P Leo thanks for your input. I don’t do tent stitching in any form (basketweave, continental or half). This was just my experimenting with what I know or have seen on other videos. I see what you are saying about continental stitching and always having the elongated stitch on the back. It makes total sense. I am not so sure I understand or should I say I can’t visualize true basketweave and full coverage. Trying to wrap my head around that. Guess I just need to play with it a bit.

P Leo ok I see now what you are saying and do agree that a full coverage can be done in all basketweave . It would take some re-educating my brain to be sure I was parking correctly however I do see how it can be done. Think I would want to try something small before doing a HAED. But again thank you so much for you thoughts and input. It is greatly appreciated

I agree with P Leo because I continental stitch with 2 threads. I stitch that way so there is no war page in the fabric. After you stitched the first row, bring the needle up in upper right corner and then in the lower left corner, repeat. Loved your demonstration!

Great explanation, but I think maybe I have an idea how I would work basketweave on a HAED, have to try it out on my SK butterflies Galore since that is already my test piece for tent/half stitch 😊

I am stitching basket weave on the sky of my haed on 40ct. It is rather nice to stitch but in my case you can see diagonals, although on the sky it looks like it is raining :)

Hello, Karen. Thank you for the video, so much idea that we can apply on our projects. Loved you your voice its relaxing while stiching. I am wondering on how you dot it in confetti area, hope you can make a video on that, maybe we can get new idea to make it easier.. that part makes me wonder how you dot it in your projects. @@NeedleBugg not specifically basket or continental stitch.. just the way on how you stitch on a confetti area, i do mine in diagonal but, a little bit cross country when theres a lot of symbol,rail roading.. thank you for the reply.

hi karen, I was hoping you would show the back of the basket weave stitch, because that is where you see the basket weave that the stitch is named for. This was an excellent video. I have to disagree with you, you are an expert. Keep on teaching. thanks for the video.

In a couple of the videos I've watched you mentioned and showed the ez guide needle, I have never seen those before but I think I would like them...could you please tell me where you get them from? LEAH Mcginley i got my fabric from heaven and earth designs. You can also find it at 123 stitch. It is a zweigart fabric and any needlework shop should be able to order it for you. Hth

Leah. I am not sure that Joann’s carries this fabric. But a shop that deals strictly in cross stitch should be able to get it. Do you have a local needlework shop? Other than Joanns hobby lobby or micheals. The big box stores usually do not have easy guide fabric

both rows look same to me. left bottom to upper right. i don’t see how you’re doing alternate rows any different ?

You can not tell from the front. The difference shows on the back of your work. So when you work your row right to left and go bottom left to upper right you get an elongated stitch on the back. Then when doing a left to right row working your stitch bottom left to upper right you get a straight up and down stitch on the back. So yes it looks the same when you stitch The difference is on the back

@@NeedleBugg your stitching both rows from bottom left to upper right so how is your stitching rows any different? sorry i don’t see it🙃 A lot show doing one row bottom left to upper right then next row too right to bottom left but i see all your rows bottom left to upper right☹️👀

As i said you need to look at the back of your work to see the difference. The stitching on the front IS the same!! I am not executing the stitch any different on both rows. You need to stitch a small swatch and then turn it over to the back. Then you will see the difference. Stitch a swatch of 10 stitches wide for say 6 rows. Following my directions Then look at the back. One row will have an elongated stitch on the back and the next row will have straight vertical stitch on the back. These will alternate. Once agan each row is stitched exactly the same way. Bottom left to upper right. Look at the back of the work!

@@NeedleBugg ok cuz i saw so many videos that say to avoid warping you need to do reverse so i’m hoping just doing every row bottom left to upper right like you i won’t get a warped fabric 🙏

Your fabric should not warp using this method. Especially if you are using a scroll or qsnap.. of course as with anything else your tension can impact it getting out of shape. Especially if you are a tight stitched.
