Many reviewers claim they can test fans and use heatinks and ribbons thinking that will tell you anything. I am taking things further and testing a variety of fans including the three new 120mm MasterFan Pro fans, Air Flow, Air Balance and Air Pressure.
For more information about these fans and the testing results check out the review article below

Now this is how you test a fan! It would be a complete fan test if you can somehow incorporate a decibel meter somewhere and omitting the sound of the bag being filled up. But overall, it gives the viewers a general idea about which fan gets the job done! 600th subscriber here, and 95th like! Keep it up Good Sir! :)

Thank you, thank you. It isn't completely clear but this video was part of a review on my website and have since gotten a little better with my editing. You are correct about the decibel meter, it would have been the trifecta of relevant information. I might add one in the next installment however, sound level and quality changes based on proximity of the meter and what is around the fan. eg radiator vs open air, grills on a case etc.. Because of that I decided to rely on the mfg tested dB number and focus on what was really important, at least from a performance standpoint. Thanks for the sub!! It will be a slow build but I'm working on more.

Very cool test. I wonder how all these would fair vs inline duct fans or a marine blower fan. I'm trying to build a diy a/c from an ice chest. Found a few designs, but the best ones either mount a giant inline fan on the outside of a cooler and run the air through a duct inside a cooler or use radiators. I'm trying to come up with a more compact design, so I need a high cfm fan that's not too big and can somehow be connected to a 3" duct. Any ideas?
@Hardwareasylum

So, basically, you are trying to build a mini swamp cooler, that seems easy enough. However, I cannot comment on what fans to use but, the way I see it, everything I did in "this" video could be adapted to your project. Thing is, I was simply testing some computer fans trying to illustrate that the fan specs are generally correct, you just need to know what to look for. For your project, you're going to want something like a delta PFC1212DC and hook it into a fan controller and don't forget the fan grills as it WILL suck up your cat.

Wow. This was good. I watched a lot of videos on SP vs AF fans but this one was the best and the most educational one. This video gives a lot of clarity. Thanks! I plan on buying one of Coolermaster MasterFan Pro series. Can you recommend me one? I have a "Deepcool Dukase" case. The front panel of my case has a Dust filter, a metal grill and a door than be kept open or closed. So if I install a fan, It will have a dust filter, the grill of the front panel and the door (can be opened and closed) as restrictions in front of it. Which one do you think I should go for? The Coolermaster Airflow fan, the balanced fan or the High Pressure fan? I would really appreciate any suggestion from you...

I'm glad you liked the video, I have a few more planned using different fans along with some lighted versions. As for a fan recommend, you cannot go wrong with the Air Balance it has the best of both worlds and with the speed limiter you can dial in how much cooling you need.

More vids like this, please include equal RPM for each fan and make sure the mic picks up the noise. That way we can pick which fan is the most effective fill rate / noise.
@Hardwareasylum
@Hardwareasylum 7 жыл бұрын
More vids, Yes. Everything else. Uhh NO. I will give you an A for effort though. Your suggestions are rather specific and do deserve a response. 1) most microphones won't be able to pick up fan noise at any level that you could make a decision on. a dB meter would be best however cost prohibitive for one with any accuracy. 2) Testing fans at the same RPM is pointless. Fans with a similar blade profile will have similar specs (flow/noise) at equal RPM points along the curve. That might work with dissimilar fans however, see point 3. 3) I currently don't have a way to set a fan to a certain RPM with any repeatable accuracy in the context of this testing method. I do promise that future videos will include some different information. This video was actually part of a larger article on my website. You might what to check it out. www.hardwareasylum.com/reviews/cooling/cm_masterfan-120/page4.aspx

I think you meant to test the famous Noctua NF-A12 which has balanced airflow and static pressure? The NF-F12 prioritizes static pressure only.
@Hardwareasylum
@Hardwareasylum 2 жыл бұрын
The fan in the video is the NF-F12 www.hardwareasylum.com/reviews/cooling/noctua_nf-f12. The NF-A12 wasn't released until two years after this video went live. I have been meaning to revisit this topic with some new fans and will be sure to put the A12 vs F12 in there.

looking at the back of the noctua fan, I think the additional spars kind of act like an pressure stator, redirecting the centrifugal airflow back into a linear direction. I found many Pressure optimized fans spill air everywhere out the side in a diffuse ways, can anyone confirm if Noctuas airflow is more linear?
@Hardwareasylum
@Hardwareasylum 4 жыл бұрын
That is actually a very well documented fact and the primary reason the F12 was created some 8 years ago. However, the focal fins don't have much effect on radiator cooling. The test here is purely on pressure. Where you will see the difference is pressure at a distance aka case cooling.

Yes, this video is quite old and, I believe some of the information you are looking for is on the supporting article for this video. The article translates the fan flow into system cooling which then can then be calculated. The rest if just simple math based on the defined variables.

it would be better if the bag would be below the fan and the fan pushing air downwards. this way the weight of the bag does not work against the pressure of the fan!

@@Hardwareasylum What you tested was airflow not static pressure. you have to put the fan up against a flat surface with several small holes in it to test pressure. Certain blade shapes can move a lot of air unobstructed outside of a case but then you put them in the case which generally will have a metal mesh or screen covering the fan and all of a sudden the fan is garbage cause the blade design was not meant for static pressure.
@Hardwareasylum
@Hardwareasylum 5 жыл бұрын
I'll give you that. However, airflow does play a part in the process. Sure, things change but at the end of the day you still have to push air through something. And, I'd argue that had I put a radiator in there instead of a restriction I would have gotten similar results. (More testing for next time) For the actual review of these fans (The Cooler Master fans) I do test them on radiators and map out the results of the fan testing as they were shown in the video.
@rale317
@rale317 5 жыл бұрын
@@Hardwareasylum Only people that would say airflow plays a part in pressure and will provide similar results are people that don't understand the difference between mmH2O and CFM. You could have a 150 CFM Ultra Kaze fan (reduce it's speed to 1500RPMs to realistically match other fans and noise output), put it up against a wall and have almost no pressure cause the blade design wasn't meant for being pressed up against obstructions. Then take a 3.0 mmH2O fan that only advertises 60 CFM and have it put out 3x as much pressure and move twice as much air through your radiator. The calculation of static pressure isn't measured by airflow at all because the fan is pushed flat against a plate so airflow will be 0. Fans with low pressure are basically just moving air in a circle instead of through when obstructions are up against it. There's a lot of fans that advertise 80CFM that have anywhere from 1 to 4 mmH20 at 1500RPMs. Everyone one of them will fill that bag up at similar rates until you put a radiator up against it. These fans and the UltraKaze are the ones I've used in the last 15ish years. The best being the top two in the pic. UltraKaze was a joke unless running max RPMs and it died super fast (however it would have filled that bag in a fraction of the time): i.ibb.co/jynvsP2/27858674-1788276124557516-3939125916088125000-n-1.jpg

But cooler master air flow is for flowing out the heat in the case. Air flow in this test is quite meaningless as i think🤔 because air flow isn’t focusing on the pressure which cause the strength of it’s 💨 didn’t enough to stuff the plastic bag.😉
