Wow the backseat crafting is real here lmao A ring with the thickness of a coin can't be worn and there's not enough space to add the jewel fittings. Dude used the material from the coin to reshape it into a ring that can be worn to then weld and refine the other pieces that hold the jewels. In other words, craftsmanship.

I think it's so it's easier to work with the metal because he bends it and hammers it into a flat bar. I imagine it's hard to make it ring shaped if the metal he cut out wasn't actually cut out
