Cloudberry Flowers - Flower Farm and Garden

It's the first week in June and time to sow some more flower seeds here in my garden in zone 8b, in Scotland. Today I am starting my biennial seeds for cut flowers early next year and some more quick growing annuals for flowers later this summer.
Biennials I am sowing today include:
Wallflowers
Foxgloves
Sweet William
Hesperis
Honesty
I am also sowing some sunflowers and phacelia as part of my succession sowing for flowers later this summer and autumn.
You can source seeds from many great suppliers. Some of the places I have bought seeds are Higgeldy Garden, Plants of Distinction, Chiltern Seeds and Moles Seeds.

Thank you so much for watching. I am glad you are enjoying the videos. I don’t actually have a seed sowing planner. I wish I was organised enough to have something proper in place! I am still so old fashioned and have everything on various pieces of paper everywhere! Hopefully I can keep you up to date through the videos as to what I am sowing when. I am having a couple weeks off at the moment to spend some family time but will be back with more videos soon.

I really enjoyed this video and you’ve given me inspiration for sowing biennial seeds and sunflower seeds. I haven’t thought about wallflowers for a long time, maybe I should get some seeds for them too. Thank you .

Thanks so much for watching. I hope you enjoy sowing a few biennial seeds this month. My wallflowers and hesperis have started to germinate now. Sunflowers are a great one to succession sow to get lots of blooms later this summer.

I love your videos! Thank you for sharing! I live i the US, Missouri zone 6a. I hope I can find these seeds in the hardware store and plant them soon! The vermicelli is something I will try too! Oh yes your greenhouse is wonderful! It would fun to have one but I’m not sure it’s allowed in my neighborhood! I will be watching for more videos. You do a wonderful job!

I used a mix of garden soil and home made compost to grow seeds this year and it worker brilliant, only thing was I did have some weeds poking up but it wasn’t a big deal

Hi, thanks for watching. That is good to know it worked. I was wondering about the weed seeds but using homemade compost the texture will be better and it will hold moisture, so it I think like you I am going to give it a go.

Always look forward to your videos. I just seeded my biannuals as well fingers crossed they come up. I also included some hollyhocks in that. Maybe not so much for cutting but pretty in the cottage garden. I have noticed a huge variability in the compost bags I have gotten they are not created equally that’s for sure. Need to pay better attention to what worked and what didn’t

Hollyhocks will be lovely in next years garden. I hope your biennials come up for you in the next few weeks. I think it is going to be trial and error for a while on finding a great peat free compost but hopefully by sharing how we are all getting on with it we can find some that work well.

I also find peat free compost tricky stuff as it does dry out very quickly when using it in small pots and seed trays. When watering, the water just runs out at the bottom. Levington peat free compost is a no no for me. Even when using a saucer under a pot it makes no difference in keeping the compost moist. I seem to have to use more water which doesn’t seem to be environmentally friendly. In larger pots, I did the three centimetre test where you stick your finger into the soil at the top and the peat free compost seemed dry so I added some water. It was only when I tipped the compost out to reuse did I discover the compost at the bottom of the pot was soaking wet.

Thanks so much for watching. It is interesting hearing how everyone is getting on with peat free compost. I just want to find a brand that I am consistently happy with like you say that stays moist. I hope you find one too. This year has been a tough one all round for growing with the weather so having a good peat free compost would at least be giving the seedlings a good strong start before they have to contend with the conditions outside.

Hi Catherine, Our seed growing medium in Australia is called seed sowing and cuttings mix. I pass it through a sieve to take out any big bits and it’s nice soft and fluffy then. It stays moist for a few days. I have a feeling that the big bits absorb the moisture and dry it out quicker. Wish I could send you out sunflower seeds they are really cheap here. I haven’t seen the pro cut series here but we have everything else. Great information again.

Hi, thanks for watching this week. Your seed starting mix sounds great. You could be right that the bigger chunks absorb more of the moisture. I am hoping I can find a good peat free mix next season. Do you grow branching sunflowers or single stemmed ones? That’s great the seeds are less expensive where you are. The good thing is although they are expensive here when growing the ones for cut flowers they do germinate really well so there is little wastage.

Thanks for another great video. I've sown my first cut flowers this year and after watching this I will try some biennials. Sadly it looks like Higgledy aren't selling a biennial collection anymore but thanks for the recommendation for them.

They are really worth it even if we have to wait until next May to see the flowers!

You mentioned a watering in the evening. I'm going to try that. I've been drenching everything in the early morning. Maybe that can cool everything down a bit before the evening growth. Hot n muggy in Michigan now. Like your greenhouse.

Hi, thanks so much for watching. Yes evening watering works for me as I do feel it gives the plants some recovery time overnight if they have been blasted with the heat all day. The moisture is retained longer in the soil too than if I watered in the morning. We are enjoying an unusual sunny dry spell in Scotland but you will be a lot lot hotter in a Michigan so imagine watering is a summer long daily gardening job for you.

Thanks for watching 😊 Yes they are all used as cut flowers. Depending on sales and what varieties florists are working with that season I might not sell all the flowers and I get to enjoy the remaining ones in the garden!

Hi Catherine, What variety of Sweet William do you grow? I grow mixed colors of Sweet William but I'm looking for taller varieties.

Hi, I grow dianthus barbatus from chiltern seeds. This year my tallest have been dianthus barbatus alba. I also have grown sooty, auricula eye and oeschberg for good lengths of stem x

What is the advantage of covering seeds with vermiculite and not just regular compost? Thank you

I use it as it helps retain moisture and nutrients. Allows a little light through which is beneficial to alot of seeds for germination. Any that need to be in darkness I would cover with seed compost. I think it helps prevent damping off which isn’t so much of a problem at this time of year but can be for me in early spring with the colder weather.
