Hi Flower Friends! It's Nicole from Flower Hill Farm- today I am starting my ranunculus. I'm teaming up with two of my local flower farmers who have experience growing these beauties! Tabitha from Houle Flower Farm and Erin from Little Ann's Flowers.
I am giving away a Garden Marker!!! Like and comment on this video! The winner will be announced Wednesday!
The method I am using with the fish tank pump is to simulate leaving the water running on the corms. You can also use an aerator, which is explained by Bare Mountain Farm. They have a great video about why oxygen benefits the corms in the soaking process.

If you live in a colder zone like we do- you could start them anytime over the next six weeks. We are specifically starting them now for a Mother's Day crop. My last frost date is around May 15. Generally, you start them 12 weeks before your last frost if you don't have season extenders like a low tunnel or a hoop house.

love the idea for aeration, you should use a aquarium air pump, airline tubing safety valve with an air stone can put the stone down with the bulbs much better for aeration that hang on filter :)

I grew ranunculus last spring also. Shipping delays resulted in getting a late start. They were blooming so well in June and then extreme heat did them in. It was great that you included Tabitha and Erin who provided more advice. Thanks for another fun and informative video!

I tried growing ranunculus last year in the spring, but it got warm so fast that they never bloomed. I dug up the corms I could find and saved them to try and plant again this year by starting them earlier. The super greens that you picked look unreal! I can’t wait to see them bloom for you!

I love ranunculus! I planted a bunch of them one year, and only 2 or 3 grew and had very small blooms. I can't wait to try again using this method, but it may have to wait until next yea, unless I can find some corms locally...Thanks again for the great ideas, Nicole!

I love that you made this video and brought in the other 2 flower farmers input too. I am in zone 6a/6b. I am glad to hear they like the cold. I have started about 75 corms of various colors yesterday to presprout. I held back the other 75 to start in 2 weeks. I think your use of the fish filter aeration in a larger bucket was an excellent idea. Better then a bubbler stone. Hope you have great luck with your chirp.

I bought some ranunculus in fall of 2019, and planted them straight away in my raised garden beds. I was completely unaware that they required any extra prep like soaking, or that they should be planted in the spring. Luckily I'm in zone 8, and they came up without any trouble come spring 2020. I think they bloomed in March. They were absolutely beautiful, and some had a wonderful scent. I never dug up the corms last year, I just left them where they were, and they've been putting out new leaves for at least a month now. I hope they flower this year too!

Growing my first ranunculus this year. I’m in California zone 9b. I soaked but did not aerate my corms. I put most of them straight into containers outside. I already have a lot of green growth so hope I can get blooms before the heat hits. The few corms I planted directly into my garden beds were promptly scarfed up by a nocturnal animal, either rat or skunk maybe. Everything I put in the ground is subject to predation from gophers and their other fiendish accomplices. Thank you for your videos. I learn so much and am so inspired to try new things because of you!
