Flowering Grass (to scale) for your Garden Railway

Another great discovery for ground cover in scale for the garden railway. 'Lime Moss' is a low growing plant with light green foliage that spreads to a carpet of (scale) grass. It's evergreen so it's good all year round with masses of tiny white flowers during the spring and summer. It prefers partial or dappled shade but survives well in full sun as long as it doesn't dry out.

Tom .Great videos.Been using Playmobil track for years always painted the rail silver.Never thought that just sanding turned them silver,a brilliant tip!!Starting a new indoor layout with the Playmobil track will be using the weathering tips and will be having a go at DIY foliage.Great ideas thanks for sharing.Rob

Hi Tom. great ground cover and excellent for your garden railway, but it looks like a fare amount of cutting back needs doing before you can run some trains. Hope we get to see trains running round soon. Thanks Tom. Regards George......

Thanks very much. It was one of a few experimental plants that I'm trying out. So far so good. It's in it's 2nd year now and I had no idea that it had flowers. All the best.

I'll be out there again in the Spring with some new bits and videos. I've re-arranged a few things and kept on top of track maintenance. I had some trouble with 'box caterpillar' that wiped out most of my 'buxus' . I also had an invasion of foxes. So far (fingers crossed) the flowering grass has been going lovely. All the best....Tom

@@tomjenssen7486 I look forward to seeing it. Could you talk about what you do for track maintenance in the video also? I've noticed that when I leave the playmobil track outside(unsecured on grass), the temperature change in Idaho will affect long straight sections most with a couple of pieces standing 5 or 6 inches off the ground on one end where two pieces meet (there's no damage, it's just the result of the lengths of track changing in wamrer vs. colder parts of the day. The slightest change in one piece adds up along a long stretch of several, and pushes everything ). I wonder if you left a few pieces of track removable intermittently along a long straight stretch(strategically placing your securing nails) and removed only those removable pieces when not in use, if that would give enough freedom for the other tracks not to warp with the temperature change. I also want to see the concrete buildings you had mentioned you were thinking about.

Hello Tom. I have just watched this video a second time because I couldn't remember the name of that ground cover plant, Lime Moss. I think I shall incorporate it in the Zen Garden but first I need to know if it likes shade or sunshine, to be well watered or fairly dry. There are two places I am thinking of using it. One is sunny and fairly dry and the other shaded and damp. If you can advise me I would be grateful. - And, by the way, I would love to have a garden railway but the slope of our garden might be a problem with inclines. - So I shall just have to keep watching yours. That's well timed as I've just put artificial grass down for my garden railway LOL , your's does look good . You now need to trim along the line as it's looking like a disused railway . Cheers.......Peter

LOL... I'm still thinking of adding some to mine. I had a terrible time last summer keeping everything alive during that heatwave. I'm going to add a lot more hard landscaping like rocks and dry ground covers. Yes, I certainly need to get trimming :) All the best mate.

Beautiful setting for playing trains in the garden Tom .... do they a need a lot watering ? ..... regards Fred

Hi Fred, I hope you're well :) They need to be well established in a large pot before planting. The dense foliage forms a good barrier to reduce evaporation but they do need to be watered well at the start. The ones in full sun need regular watering in dry spells. All the best mate :)

Sagina subulata? It looks especially good with your miniature trees. Good job! It would be nice to see how they look together in different seasons.

Thanks very much. The trees are also evergreen (I try to choose these types) so it's quite nice all year round. I still haven't taken some shots or videos of snow so I'll definitely do that at the next opportunity. All the best.
