Flowering or Bloom Phase of the Cannabis Growth Cycle
Professor DeBacco
Flowering Stage Length
The flowering stage is the final growth stage of a cannabis plant and is when the buds are produced and maturing.
This is typically in the weeks 8-11 of the growth cycle.
Most strains flower in 8-9 weeks of the growth phase.
Some can take even longer (Ex. Sativa dominate strains)
Overall Progression
Flowering Stage Outdoor and Indoor
Outdoor plants will initiate flowering naturally when the plant receives 12 hours of light or less each day which occurs as summer transitions into fall.
Indoor growers can trigger the flowering cycle by reducing the photoperiod to 12 hours a day.
Flowering Subphases
Flower initiation (week 1-3)
The plants continue to grow in physical size
Pre-Female flowers produce pistils (white hairs)
Mid-flowering (week 4-5)
The plant vegetatively will stop growing
Plant focuses more on bud development
Late flowering/ripening (week 6 and on)
Trichome density will increase
Color of the pistils will change
Grower Tips During Flowering Phase
Do not prune plants
Plants should be trellised to support heavy buds
Growers will typically feed bloom plants that have high concentrations of phosphorus, but consider the substrate and be careful how much is added to avoid negative environmental impacts.
End of the Flowering Phase
Flower buds will visually develop quickly toward the end of the flowering cycle.

"Do not prune during flowering phase"....well hell, there's a whole bunch of other channels that say the opposite. They say strip the bottom two thirds at flowering onset, and strip out remaining fan leaves toward the end... which is it? I'd much rather not mess with it at all, but everyone was saying that stripping and trimming was vital for maximum bud growth....

I did the heavy pruning, and the kolas are nice and fat and looking good... would they be better and fatter if I had left them alone? This is my second year growing....still trying to learn. I've been smoking samples for a couple weeks now.... still very light and mellow, but getting stronger every week. Should be some very fine weed. White trichomes...still looking for a bit of amber. Harvest any day now.

Totally outdoor grow. FYI. I have no money for equipment or expensive fertilizers, so I use sunshine and horse and cow poop. Also, with a four plant limit (Virginia) I'm trying to grow the biggest plants possible. They got pretty big, but not as big as I want yet. Looking for apple tree size. I figured planting in the actual earth would let the roots grow as long as they want, finding extra nutrients without me spoon feeding them everything they need.

You should be doing most of your pruning in veg to set the plants up for an efficient flowering phase.

@@DeBaccoUniversity Thank you. I'll do that next season! This is my second year, and I did much better this year than last! The biggest improvement for me was switching from containers to growing in the earth. I'm getting at least 10 times the yield I did last year... and I'm honing in on optimal harvest time this year.... watching those trichomes waiting for a touch of amber. I've got a whole bunch of kolas nearly the size of my forearm. There's so much to learn! Thanks for being part of the teaching community! I like your mellow, science based style.

@@DeBaccoUniversity One thing I don't have is a decent space for drying... I'm money poor, (but life rich!). I'm thinking I can put much of my harvest right into a freezer until I have space to dry it properly... or not even dry it, but make edibles and oils from it... does that sound like it would work? I still have a lot of learning ahead of me. I'm kind of old, so I don't assimilate info as fast as I used to.

Can you explain more about the pruning in flower. I’ve always been under the impression and from experience that pruning in early weeks of flower are ok(strain/pheno dependent) Usually take lower branches around days 14-21 to help with air circulation and to create larger colas and no larfy buds under canopy. I will take most of shade leaves also. And then again around day 35-42 I will remove some more fan leaves that blocks bud sites etc. I’ve tried both ways over the 30+ years of growing indoors and haven’t seen many negative affects to my plants by doing this. I realise it stresses the plant out though I think it helps control stretch if you do it around day 14. All my opinion of course. Love your video and information
@DeBaccoUniversity
@DeBaccoUniversity 10 ай бұрын
In short, the pruning you do in flower should be a continuation of what you started in veg. Removing shade leaves is consistent, and in part pruning selection can play a role in timing.
