Dear Friends, thank you for your time again :-D We are back with another hotly suggested turntable to be reviewed: the US$450 Fluance RT84 that now comes with the 2M Blue (instead of the previous 2M Red). I thought the Rega P1 will clearly get beat this time with its stock Carbon cartridge also priced at the same $450 in North America.
Lo and behold.......the latter won. I guess we are all shocked, or maybe rather not, as the experienced vinylists had told us before: that a great tonearm is really tantamount to superb resolution and playback performance, above having a costly cartridge, a thick plinth, and of course, the marketing hype (your 5 stars, awards, and skewed reviews due to the influence of goodwill and sponsorships).
I believe you friends will do the same for me, as I would do for you: honesty, spending your own money to buy equipment for reviews, and avoiding all forms of monetary rewards.
Remember, this is a hobby we all hold dear. Don't spoil it! :-D We need stonkingly great equipment (and affordable) to enjoy our vinyl music!!!
My family and I have been busy lately with the Diwali festivities with our fellow Indian Singaporeans, and helping an Indian neighbour who had just newly moved in! Moko is in the thick of action too. She is recovering very well after intensive rehabilitation physiotherapy sessions after the operation on her Right Hind Leg (Cranial Cruciate Ligament rupture sustained in June). Thank you to some of you friends' well wishes!!! Woof woof!!! :-D
...Warmest regards to all of you dearest buddies and friends!!!
*Background :-)
Dearest Friends and Buddies,
I am Ian and I reside in sunny Singapore. I love our Vinyl Community and Vinyl Music. Vinyl analogue playback is utterly blissful, and I want for fellow friends and buddies to engage in vinyl music for many, many years in their life, each vinyl buddy through their school life, through the hustle and bustle of daily work, accompany them through precious hours at home with their family members or in their hostel with their friends. Vinyl music is blissful, free of time smear, phase shift, pre-ring and post-ring that plagues digital playback. Vinyl buddies and friends can all attest to that. It is not warm in the “bassy warm” sense, it is not soothing in the sense that “everything gets smoothed out”. It is because it is analogue, very detailed, calm, invigorating, enthralling, dynamic, refreshing. In a word, blissful. Utterly :-D
I want for all to get the very equipment that will get us there. These equipment, I firmly believe, are present, and existent, even at affordable price points!..and I started off in Dec 2015 hunting out for them, selling off my own Rega RP6 (which my wife and I loved) to fund the first batch of cartridges for review: the 5 cartridges in Group A ($70-$80), and the 7 cartridges in Group B ($90-$130). Subsequently I told myself to set aside $500-$1000 per month from my monthly salary to buy equipment to review. My own money. Quite a hefty sum monthly, significant to me, as I am a salaried man. This is my commitment. I believe in every field, there are people who have to make the sacrifice to pursue their love for the greater good, and to serve, the community of friends. I have also downsized my car in mid-2017 so as to commit these monies to fund these projects. I totally, rigorously, and kindly reject all forms of donations, be they from friends, from retailers, from manufacturers. This is a hobby, and my teachers and advisors in life have advised me that to bring balance to life, and to be wholesome, one will engage in a livelihood (daily job or business) that earns the monies, and one will also simultaneously engage in a hobby/service in life that is non-competitive, non-monetarily-remunerative. My wife totally understands what I want to do for the community and she so kindly supports my decision and efforts. Vinyl music is a lovely hobby I hold dearly. Friends and buddies are my ultimate responsibility and my love. I want the very best for them, and to provide totally honest reviews. Moles exist in hifi forums, moles also exist from benefactors who donate. I do not want to remotely encounter any moles masquerading as benefactors donating to my cause, only to find out sooner or later that such donations were/are from certain manufacturers or retailers. Everybody will do things differently. I want to maintain my status as a common-folk, aspire always to adopt the Shokunin spirit: of spending the utmost diligent care, through unhurried work, never caring for returns, in perfecting their work for the community. The personal satisfaction of getting to the very best equipment in each price class to help all my lovely buddies and friends is, the only thing, in store for me :-D We toast to the joy and bliss of vinyl analogue music. Vinyl Music deserves our love and attention. Our listening. Our care.
Let's go, buddies and friends!!!
Warmest Regards,
~ ian :-D

Dear Ian, First let me wish you and your family good health. You and your colleagues, whether in Singapore, the UK or elsewhere are the true heroes in the worldwide battle with Covid-19. Your heroism is all the greater because you are fighting an invisible opponent, often without inadequate equipment or support. Thank you many times over. Because of my age I am in total isolation lockdown - and might be so for the immediate future- and so unable to have my MC cartridge replaced on my Michell Gyro SE turntable. Your cheerful, honest enthusiastic appraisal of turntables, cartridges and phonostages has given me much food for thought (and pleasure) as I consider what substitute turntable to buy. The Michell Techno arm is great until you are my age and have to replace the cartridge. The fact that you use your own money and particularly time to give information and pleasure to others is the mark not only of an enthusiast but shows a love for your fellow man. Stay well. Stay sane. Dear Brother in the U.K., Thank you for your immense words and support. I am very touched. I just came home after a 12hr shift from work. Knackered indeed. Just washed up and settled down for dinner. But reading your message as I'm seated down here at 8pm at the table with my wife and Moko besides me, my wife and I naturally feel it to drop my dinner and write to you first. Yes, we are fighting an invisible enemy, you do not know is the patient in front of you, a +ve case. Yes it is clichéd....the stiffening PPE, the headaches, the sweat, the discomfort, the fear, the hungry stomach, the thoughts of our loved ones. The countless sacrifices, and yes, the most immeasurable one: one's life. We have to protect ourselves, our working medical and nursing colleagues, so that we can continue to fight this war. We will fight on. We will march on. Thank you for your love and kindness, Brother. And, please let me wish for you and your family good health, safety, and jay you all be well and happy💚🏡🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀 And a lovely spinning Michell💪🤗👌with a new cartridge soon to spin beautiful analogue music again.

I actually came to see that video after I've ordered an RT85, which is not actually shipped yet. But sadly after watching this video I get really confused. Because this video probably the only where fluance's RT series quite ruined. The actual reason for me is upgrade of my 5-y old dual cs 420. But not I'm not sure that I'm on the right way.

Hi Ian, Great to see you again with your review of the Fluance RT-84. Fluance has provided turntables to several KZfaq channels for review. All of the reviews I have seen have been very positive. However, none of the their reviews are as detailed and comprehensive as yours. Thank you for working so hard to keep the vinyl community informed with your excellent reviews. Dear Brother Ron, Yes, the virus has to be controlled. Tourism, a double edged sword here then. We experienced many China nationals visiting our country the two weeks before the Lunar Chinese New Year (25th Jan). (I am not a racist, and, I do not lament nor hate them) And many local Chinese going to China in late January and returning to Singapore. Currently, daily, our government, and national infectious disease experts and team, are laying down daily close updates with all of us medical doctors and nurses, in hospitals, outpatient clinics, private and government. It is a race. Paramedics, support staff, radiographers, etc, are all severely exhausted. It is the gravest understatement I have ever made: We are exhausted, depressed and our family lives are all affected due to the stress and logistical changes we have to make. Even at 3:10am now, I'm working. Thank you. Seeing your message 2 hours earlier made me enjoy some relief away from the job at hand, and I quickly liked and loved your comment. Thank you Brother. I deeply appreciate your love and kindness for me, my family and my fellow singaporeans.

One thing not mentioned is that the P1's motor is awfully noisy right out of the box. There have been many complaints online about squeaky and 'thumping' motor noises. Also, the motor is taped to the plinth with two-sided tape and vibration isolation is non-existent. You hear the P1's motor spinning right through the platter. There is no separate ground wire on the P1 - ground is coupled to the Left channel signal ground and this causes issues with many pre-amps in the form of buzzing. Not to mention, the RCA cables are extremely cheap. Build quality also does not justify the P1's asking price.

Oh, how I missed your uncompromising review Ian! I really love them! I love how you shredded the project essential and now the Fluance.. Interesting how you seem to be the first person to notice the similarities between the Fluance and the Audio technica (well, them essentially being clones). It is so refreshing to have someone really testing turntables properly, without sponsoring from the manufacturer and be so thorough.. I do (and I’m sure many like me) buy your test winners blind because of that. A really big thank you from the Netherlands! I also hope it comes across as positive s as I mean it to be. 1) With the US import duties on MIC goods, lots of Chinese companies are beginning to route their final assembly to Taiwan to side-step these duties. 2) Businesses (like Audio Technica) with significant interests in the PRC would be obliged to their shareholders to toe the CCP OB markers and avoid mentioning the 3Ts, X and HK (i.e. Tibet, Taiwan, Tiananmen, Xinjiang and Hong Kong) to avoid running afoul of the CCP and its 5cent brigade.

@@HiViNywschannel I must say I enjoy your reviews so much. They're the best I've seen out there for sure. One thing I'd add though is that (at least in Canada) the Planar 1 is no longer an entry-level turntable at all. Their prices range from 700-850$ now. For the P1. While the Fluance RT84 is 550$. If the Planar 1 is out of one's budget, what would you recommend is a good entry-level when comparing the Sony, Fluance, Carbon, etc.?

Hi Ian, I recently found out that Michael Fremer from Analog Planet has measured the tonearm of the RT8x series to have an effective mass of an enormous 28.2 g! This explains why the 2M Blue sounds quite dead on this turntable, as the 2M series (with their OM heritage) benefit a lot from low to low-mid mass arms (I would recommend nothing heavier than a Rega arm, or a Technics arm with stock headshell). Higher effective masses (15 g and more) literally smother the liveliness of the 2M cartridges. Again a turntable builder did not get the basics right, by a crass mismatch of arm and cartridge.

Greetings and thank-you Ian for all the kindness and joy you share. 👍🤗 Last week I happened upon your YT channel for the 1st time and was immediately inspired by your passion and dedication to providing us with honest and unbiased opinions on all things analogue. I had visited some other channels before finding yours but for me it was readily apparent Brother Ian, you are different. You do all of this, not for recognition, financial benefit or gain but for the love and for the analogue community as a whole. As a result and during this time of Worldwide uncertainty Ian you have inspired me to commence my own analogue journey to find joy and simplicity in the music. I have just purchased a pair of Klipsch RP 6000f and a Schitt Mani. The Klipsch pair were 1/2 price so I could pass them up but the Mani was a no-brainer after all your informative reviews but I am unable to find any advise on what amplifier to pair with the RP 6000f's. I would generally be listening to anything from classics like Fleetwood Mac and Paul Simon to Amy Winehouse, Coldplay, the Weeknd and beyond. I know how busy you are but if you get some spare time I would love your recommendations for the best amplifier to pair with the Klipsch for not too much more than $750 US. Also, today I advised by a reputable Hifi establishment in Australia today that a SL 1200 MK4 or MK5 are DJ Decks and simply do not produce good quality sound. According to them I should look at a Rega P3 however I am still actively seeking the Technics SL 1200 MK4 OR 5. 👍👌😁 (With MP 110 Cart) Wishing you and your family good health and happiness! Gratitude for all your help to date. Very much looking forward to a time when you can upload on a more regular basis. Christian in Australia. ✌

I don't quite understand those modern vertually weightless platters. In the good old times even any $150 TT's platter weighted at least 1.5-2 kg. That's why old belt-driven Technics TTs had a Wow and flatter of 0.045% and not 0.13% like this Fluance RT84.

I watched your unbiased comparison review since I was seriously considering buying the Fluance RT-85. Now I am looking at the Rega P2 instead of the P1 since it has a heavier plinith, glass platter and an one piece tonearm (P1 has a two piece tonearem). Also P1 and P2 use the same cartridge. I would like to hear your thoughts on this. Cheers, Tom

Your explanation on the advantages of a well built tonearm is perhaps the best at explaining it. A lot of my friends that are mildly into vinyl think incorrectly that a better cartridge is the bigger deal in making good sound and I turn them around and tell them to watch this video.
@manolokonosko2868
@manolokonosko2868 Жыл бұрын
I watched the video and I also watched video by an American you tuber who used to be a HiFi salesman - the cartridge is the key component in achieving the best sound. The tonearm is important, yes - the shape (straight, S, J), but not as important as the cartridge. Anyone that tell you a carbon tonearm is 100X better than an aluminum or nearly other material used, is full of shit. Mass? Weight? That's what the balance weight and the anti-skate are for. And even if the carbon is better than the others, the improvement is so marginal, that you will hardly notice it, and you'd need an A/B test to make a proper test. And why would you do that, unless you work in a lab? And - mort importantly - the people that can afford those very expensive tonearms costing $12K + are already in their late 50s and above.... they have lost their hearing not due to trauma but due to natural aging. One last thing: I don't listen to any of the apes of music played on these videos, so they hardly make a difference to me, except for some comparisons in which I'm more interested in clarity and presence, wow and fluter, sibilance and tracking. And none of these have anything to do with the material of the tonearm, at least, significantly.

Thank you🎉 then when you factor in all the hassles p1 has like changing the belt for 45's 😂😂 it is not better table in my eyes. I guess if you don't have many 45s then ok but if you do like I do then it is a big hassle. IMO Plus used different cartridges how can you compare the tables then?
@Audiorevue
@Audiorevue 7 ай бұрын
@@budsmoker4201120 well you know in a lot of ways I've sort of changed my tune a little bit, although not really. I still think for the money the P1 is the best turntable on the market for sound quality. But I realize now what I didn't realize then which is a lot of times it isn't just about sound quality. Sometimes it's about usability and ease of use and sure you're taking a hit to absolute sound quality but the thing is less of a headache to use. So yeah back 2 years ago about a lot of issues when it comes to hi-fi I was of the mind that sound quality is what mattered most, but since then I've realized that sound quality doesn't matter much if the equipment that achieves it you never use.

Wow, just finished watching the video. This demonstration really flies in the face of all those "audio experts" that say the cartridge is the most important part of the TT and that the TT doesn't influence the sound that much (within the same class). I was going to ask why you didn't use the M2 Blue on both decks, but I see you were handicapping the P1 intentionally to expose the difference between the performance and capabilities of the TTs. Outstanding work Ian, as always. I REALLY enjoyed the extra family video at the end. I think you should show more of your "home town". It's beautiful. Take care my friend. Cheers! 😁👍

@@HiViNywschannel Hello my friend! Yes, gotta have some good curry or Biryani tonight! Here in Kansas City, we don't have a "Little India", however being a center for large engineering firms and Telecom, we have a great number of Indian engineers, etc and therefore we have many great Indian restaurants and grocery stores. Regarding the B&O tx-2 vs Technics/mp-150... That took a surprising twist. SoundSmith sent me a new SMMC3 and after living with the Technics/mp-150 for 3-4 weeks, I began the comparison. At first, the SMMC3 sounded dull and muffled compared to the Technics/mp-150..it was "no-contest" and frankly, disappointing. Then it hit me. The SMMC3 cartridge has an output voltage that is less than half that if the mp-150. I was concentrating on definition, color, highs & lows so much, I didn't notice that the volume was much lower. The Magnepans 1.7's that I had gotten a couple weeks before do not sound good at low volumes....they sound "dull & muffled". When I turned up the volume on the SMMC3 to match the sound level in the mp-150, the magic was unlocked! The SMMC3 sounded fantastic and to my (old) ears, it gave the mp-150 a good run for the money...sounding at least as good in all respects. Then it came down to comparing my experience with the two tt's. Technics: Beautiful, function over form, classic. Compatible with many, many cartridges. Suspension, surprisingly inferior to B&O. A person or dog walking across room could make the needle skip. It had some trouble tracking on some rare lp's that had oddly shallow grooves. Also, for reasons unknown to me, I needed to use my zerostat to remove a fair amount of static from every LP that I played. B&O tx-2: Beautiful, Form over function...or so it appears, but it is quite solid. A classic, B&O stylized design. Only one source for cartridges, although I have a mid-range SMMC3. SoundSmith tells me that the SMMC2 is a huge step-up in sound quality, so there is an upgrade path. Suspension: Lightweight platter gave me doubts, but the suspension is incredible. My two big boxers can wrestle right next to the tt and no skipping occurs. People don't have to tread lightly when a record is playing. Tracking: never a problem, not even on lp's that caused problems for the Technics. Perhaps being tangential gave it an advantage. Static: I'm back to almost never needing to used the zerostat. The tx-2 also is safer to use for this old guy...cue-up/down and right-left movement is all done with the control of servo-motors... So I don't have to worry about damaging a record if I'm tired or not paying close attention. I'm sure you guessed by now, but with the cartridges sounding almost the same to me, it came down to turntable functionality and the B&O won out. It will remain as my full-time turntable. I'll stop now since I've already written a novel. Best regards to you and your family!

The Schiit is 799.00 and appears to be a major PITA to set up. Perhaps it is worth the money and time. The Mani preamp is a fantastic unit. I would have to wonder, however, if the SOL is worth 300 more than the Rega P1.
@jonberg469

@@keithling417 they are redesigning the SOL right now to make it more user friendly. You can't purchase it right now. But yes I wonder about its price to performance. Schiit has a good reputation at delivering good results at reasonable prices.

Ouch! I wish this video existed earlier. I remember I asked you about the Fluance turntables a while ago. I wanted one so bad I bought one at a trip I made to the US. I have the RT83 with acrylic platter and 2m red cartridge. I can't complain, but I wasn't expecting the P1 to be so different. The servo motor, the exchangeble cartridge mount, and automatic speed change I thought were better value compared to the P1. Oh well. I'm still enjoying the Fluance turntable. It's good to learn more from experts like you! Thanks for the review!

Dear Ian. I have known your channel a short time ago, since although I am a vinyl enthusiast I have problems with English so I usually consult channels in Spanish. I have to tell you that, despite the difficulties, it is the best vinyl channel I have ever seen. You help us a lot to people who do not have so many resources or technical knowledge and you do it selflessly. Also I have learned that you are a doctor and you are fighting against Covid-19, a very hard work these days. I also have health relatives and I know what that fight is. My appreciation for your work. I hope that one day I have the opportunity to do a review of the iFi Micro iPhono3 phonostage that is fighting to relegate the Rega Aria since I trust you more than any other enthusiast in the world of vinyl. Both AT and Fluance could be telling the truth. "Made in" often refers to where it was assembled. These days, no matter where something was made, the parts are often sourced from multiple places. I am auditioning the rt85 and agree that the sound is a bit soft. There is a lack of delineation between sounds and much of the soundstage is mushed into a round area between the speakers. It doesn’t sound bad it actually has a very clean sound. There is no hum, motor noise or manufacturing defect that I can find. Treble is smooth with very little sibilance. The speed is dead on and the wow is .09 according to the rpm app on my phone. It just lacks that amazing stereo separation and soundstage you can experience with vinyl. The turntable has a lot going for it I wish the could release a model with a better arm. I also wonder why the other reviewers don’t notice this. It can’t just be because they received a free sample for review. Maybe the are not using high end equipment to test the turntable.

I know that I am not alone that when I say rewatching your videos is a wonderful escape for so many of us, and gives us some peace and comfort. Know that you are very appreciated! Also, I am the fellow who recently picked up an MP-200 and wasn’t loving it. Turns out it was an issue with my preamp! Since switching to the onboard phonostage in my 1971 Marantz 2245, it sounds *amazing*! I can’t wait to pick up a Mani or possibly even a Moon 110LP (I have heard it bests the Mani, and hopefully one day you can review!)

I just ordered the Nagaoka MP 110 based off your reviews. Other people brought up it's higher quality for it's price point too. It seemed to be the word of mouth cartridge. I was worried about spending that much money on the 2M Blue and not liking it. I hear people say it can be crass. I'm no audiophile, I just love records and needed to upgrade my cartridge. After it breaks in I will let you know the results.

Good day! Please take some humble criticism of your review. You are for the most part fair enough with some of your thoughts about the origins, and build parts in regards to Fluance reference models. They are known for using a fair amount of obtainable market shelf components. Though I, as a 40 year plus, audiophile, have had a good amount of experience with the best top end equipment. I personally own, now, with my older lifestyle, a Fluance RT85. And with my skilled ears, I tried, as I might, to hear the accusations cast at the Fluance brand, and all I can say is fix your cartridge set-up on your Fluance table. This is a fine cartridge. A bit finicky for bad pressings maybe, but on good vinyl releases, this turntable delivers audiphile reproduction for the critical ears. The perceived loss of midrange Fidelity is not found in my turntable. Nor noise, nor vibration, nor anything amiss. The error is in your staging. I suggest you do another test,, re-checking the Fluance set-up . My ears pick up only beautiful music, that seems to be only improving, with my break-in period progressing. Nothing outside of a tt at far greater cost will improve on the excellent quality parts chosen for the companies reference tt equipment. Whether off shelf, or their own, the components chosen, are perfectly matched with great care. And over your choice, I will take, the RT85 hands down. May even upgrade to a Ortofon 2M bronze, at some point.

HEY IAN!!!!! We've missed you buddy! Thank you so much for doing this review. I have been waiting to hear a review of the Fluance 84 and 85 that goes as deep as yours. Literally asked out loud for you to do this months ago. And the Rega is the perfect table to shoot out with. I think a lot of folks (including myself) were thinking that if they could get the features of the 84 and drop a better cart on it, we could get what we were chasing cheap. Clearly stating that dropping a better cart won't fix tone arm issues was the $1000 gift in this review. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. Shopping for my P3 now. Happy Holidays!

Yes Buddy!!! Thank you for catching up!!!! How are you?😄🙏 Hehheh...yes.... Us, because I myself thought so too!beforehand!!!😄👌but.... facts, are facts, and results and hands on, show that it might as well be a purchase of the AT-LPW30TK. And even then, the performance would be, sad to say, highly un-ideal. Rega P3, the sweetest spot into the Rega lineup i realize! Much much much to improvise and upgrade too!....just like a Mazda MX-5!💪😄👍!!!! It will keep us happy for many, many years. Great video. In regards to the China Taiwan discrepancy, my understanding is, because some do not recognize Taiwan (ROC) as an independent nation, it is often stated as China (PRC). Canada recognizes Taiwan as an independent nation, Fluance is a Canadian company and thus they have labeled Taiwan as the country of origin. So I don’t think anyone is lying or hiding anything.

Very happy to read your message just in time during my break🤗🙏🍀 Brother, I too wish you and your family safety, good health and happiness always. 😄vinyl analogue beauty permeating the airwaves jn your home always too🎶🎵🎶🎶🎶🎶 (I've already finished doing the auditions on 2 carts and now already doing the video editing work and hopefully can complete it for you guys 🌿to watch soon)
