Thank you US Coast Guard for all you do in promoting safety and defense of freedom of navigation or at times of war. With the global warming and opening up of the arctics, I hope our leaders have plans and actions to get us ready for the arctic challenges as well as the enormous opportunities. Including retooling our ships, submarines, air forces and our weapon systems and communication tools. We need to train our younger generation to man all these challenges and opportunities and the lead times for education and training is very long to be really good at anything.

I retired from the Coast Guard after 21 years. My first duty station was on the USCGC Staten Island (WAGB-278) which was commissioned in the mid-1940s and given to the Russians as part of the Lend-Lease program. The Russians got it stuck in the ice in the late 50s and gave it back to the Navy who promptly gave it to the Coast Guard. I served on her from March 1972 until July 1974. Calling the Healy a "powerful" icebreaker is a joke. The Healy could not break the amount of ice that the old Wind Class (Staten Island, Eastwind, Southwind, Westwind, Northwind, Burton Island and Edisto) or the Glacier. The Wind Class breakers were classified as Heavy Icebreaker. The Polar Star and Polar Sea were both designed to break more ice than the Wind Class icebreakers. (I did the commissioning photos on both. I also shot the engineering photos of the Polar Star's variable pitch screws which broke in the ice on her first trip in the ice). The Healy may be larger than the two Polar Class icebreakers but the U.S. Coast Guard has always classified the Healy as a Medium icebreaker and it was never intended to be used in the same ice condition as the older verssels.

Red Boats Rule!! I served aboard USCGC NORTHWIND (WAGB-282) 1979-1981 and deployed to Antarctica in support of Operation Deep Freeze ‘80, along with USCGC GLACIER and USCGC POLAR SEA. Our mission was to assist POLAR SEA on her first Antarctic break-in, as well as to escort a USNS supply ship into and out of McMurdo. Later in the year we deployed on Arctic East Summer ‘80 up to Thule Greenland. Fun times!! Semper Paratus! 🇺🇸

@tc1uscg65

Correct. Anyone in the CG or who studies its ice mission knows that Healy's main mission is research. Yes, it was designed to break the ice but if you look at the 1` for 1 vessels abilities, it's on par with the NEW Mackinaw in the great lakes. Heck, the 140 WTGB's I served on could break 4 ft solid ice (blue water ice) or more during backing and ramming. Great ship the Healy but it confuses people to know it may look bigger but is not in the same class as the Sea, or Star. The next level of breaker being designed is going to be fantastic.

I looked it up. Polar Sea is no longer in service. Polar Star is 399ft length with a displacement of 13,842 Tons Healy is 420ft length with a displacement of 16,257 Tons Healy probably looks like it'd be smaller because the hull goes up higher making it look like less length.
@tc1uscg65
@tc1uscg65 Жыл бұрын
@@herc1305 Healy doesn't have the power that the Sea or Star had. The Healy has about as much breaking ability as the older Mackinaw (not the new one). Heck, even the 140's can break 3-4ft of ice, more when backing and ramming. Healy was designed, for one thing, for research. Ice breaking was just to get it closer to where they needed to do research. Sea and Star, along with the Windclass and even the Glacier were designed to break ice for resupply missions. Doing research was 2nd fiddle to its purpose. Comparing the Healy to a polar class for mission tasking would be like comparing a Herc to a Falcon. 73's

Skip Davis that is not correct. The Coast Guard IS considered a full member of the US armed services. They currently work under the dept of Homeland Security. This is because the CG has law enforcement authorities. The US constitution forbids the DoD from conducting law enforcement. In times of a declared war (by Congress) the CG is transferred to the DoD. Once the state of war is canceled they are transferred back to their normal department. In the past the CG was under the dept. of Transportation, now would be back to Homeland Security.
