Another aspect of tension...I sometimes find myself pressing the flute against my lip instead of just resting it. That makes me cover the hole too much and the low notes take a hit. The cure is just to remember to relax my hands and let the flute just rest there.

I can't believe the difference it has made, raising the body for the low notes rather than playing down into ithe flute. I have never, ever heard that before, and have always struggled with low notes. Thank you so much for this tip.

Starting at 1:33 one can see the clearest example of embouchure change I have ever seen. E.g.the corners of your mouth can be seen moving down , you can almost hear them click to new positions as you go down the scale. Another teacher has referred to the final position as "shark mouth". My current teacher has told me to do this too. But nothing is a good as a sharp, well-lit video of it happening in real time. Now that I think of it, the kind of tensions used to get the middle register would make it impossible to do what you are demonstrating... underlining your point about relaxation and undoing things. A stellar bit of teaching. Even if the student can't do it, he can see what we are shooting for and head off in the right direction with confidence.

Thanks! This was great. I have been getting into the flute lately and enjoying how elegant the flute is. No reeds, just breath, just air. Its sound evokes freedom , air (high notes) and water (those liquid like lows).

I've been getting into flute and I did practice before several years ago and I remember I was able to get that low register, quite easily actually. But now, it's like I can sort of hear the note it's supposed to be, but it's so airy. The first time I got into flute, I spent 2 weeks just on getting a nice, crisp A out of my head joint. Then I remember it took me another week to get from sounding that same piccolo A with open fingering to sounding open C#. And then I don't know, the low register just came naturally. But then once I moved to a new house, I wasn't able to find my flute for months, so I couldn't practice and I lost it. Now I'm getting back into it and it's like I can consistently get that A from the head joint, very crisp and all that, but like I can't consistently get a good tone on even my open C#. And sometimes I will like move my flute to try to get to that crisp C# thinking that it's a position thing and nothing's working And sometimes I can hear myself doing like an octave warble if you know what I mean, like it starts on pitch, quickly goes up an octave, and then just as quickly goes back down and sustains. It seems to most often happen when I go to press a key or when I'm playing the first note in the breath and also when I'm doing legato, so no tonguing. When I do get a good tone on the C# though, I try to see how far I can descend and still keep a good tone. And it varies, sometimes I get to second octave C and it stops, sometimes I get all the way to first octave A and it stops. When I am getting a crisp note out of what's supposed to be a lower note, like first octave G or lower, it's actually an octave higher than it's supposed to be. I think it's a case of too much tension, especially because of the higher octave playing with a lower fingering, but then, when I consciously try to relax my embouchure just a tad, it either just stays the same or it falls apart, I stop getting notes out of it. I want to get back to where I was, which was doing low register C major scales legato and staccato.

3.4..... I know now why I sometimes sound airy and weak when playing low notes. Well you just clarified something I was told several weeks ago. When I try to relax too much I allow my lips to get narrow and I am putting too much air through my lips. I have corrected that now thanks to your tip. I love playing those low notes. When I have my emboucher just right ..... I'm still trying to get consistent....I get that amazing rich resonant tone with power. I can very the volume and the power by really concentrating on letting my jaw and lips relax. When I do that the tone comes. It's fantastic. The reason I love your vids is because during practice I am coming up against the very problems you touch on. I go to the practice room and go for it. I have improved so much over the last few months my flute playing is much improved.....from breathing to tone etc. Thanks a bunch. 😅😅😅

Thanks for this video, and for your channel ! May I share my own experience ? So far I can tell, you get the richest and most powerful low tones from a good air intake, suppleness of your entire upper body, and the deeper possible "ha" - Air intake : relaxed and open pelvis, think you take your air down to your thights (Emmanuel Pahud's trick) - suppleness of the upper body. Every single muscle has to be supple, jaw, neck, shoulders, back, but especially your guts (Emily Beynon's body check) - deepest possible "ha" coming from your pelvis (by deepest, I mean, the lowest "ha" you would be able to pronounce with your voice). Think your pelvis as the point from which the air is catapulted. Having set this, you have more room to use your lips to choose a colour for your lows. Cheers !

Something I have found helpful since has been to record some longish low notes played by professionals (excerpted from a variety of pieces) and play them back repeatedly for me to try to copy them exactly. They play, I play, they play, I play, etc., until I am satisfied and can move on to the next. I have also discovered that professionals may occasionally disguise less optimal tone in these low notes by using vibrato. I have also discovered that many if not most players shape their longer low notes by playing into the flute more at the note start and then raising the airstream, almost like a scooping motion with the lips. This gives a shape to the tone which is more attractive than an otherwise even unchanging tone. I also suspect it may aid getting a sharper attack to the note as well.

Love Love your videos. I have learned so much from these in just the past 2 days. Thank you for posting them. So many problems that I have you address and really talk them through. You have brought back for me the joy of playing. Could you post a video on how to incorporate vibrato into your piece, when to quiver and when not to. Vibrato is still a work in progress for me and such a mystery for some reason.
@DoctorFlute
@DoctorFlute 6 жыл бұрын
Think of vibrato that is a switch you turn on when you pick up your flute. It should always be on whether or not your play a note long enough to have vibrato. It should be flexible enough to make faster and slower or leave out if the piece needs this. But in general vibrato should be "on" as soon as that flute is up to the lip.

As always your info is well ordered and easy to follow, plus effective when applied. My struggle I suppose is simply to keep on practicing and rest before my mouth muscles get so tired I can't get the low notes after doing things up high for awhile, like going up and down the harmonic steps on each key, especially the low ones. A couple of times I got the 7th harmonic above the low C, but still working to control which harmonic pops out and not have it pop into another unintended harmonic. Your info helps in zeroing in on the muscles I should be using and the lip position. Thank you.

After 28 years of jamming I took up daily practice with some Trevor Wye things less than a week ago. Every day gets better by small degrees. First exercise in tone book, I'm still getting that and haven't got it yet. I can hit all the harmonics up to the 6th high G, but not intentionally. Even when going for the first octave, I usually hit the octave plus 5th first.

Thank you. Becoming aware of the various muscles in your lips and face, and their respective roles in embouchure and sound production, is essential to knowing how to produce the sounds that you want on a consistent basis. Once you are aware, your brain will, over time, grow new neural connections to make this control automatic. But the awareness really speeds up the process. Without the awareness, you will be growing new neural connections to automate your bad habits and mistakes. Here is one other suggestion: At least once a week, play into a recorder. (There are lots of phone app recorders that you can download to your phone). This exercise is brutal on the ego, but if you really want to improve the way you sound, you have to hear the way you *really* sound. But be kind to yourself. Know that you will eventually be playing perfectly. And picture how good that feels!

Hi, Tatiana. Actually, relaxing is the key to playing better any instrument. Many beginner drummers, for example, are too tense when they play, mostly when they play Rn'R. Only when a drummer lerns to relax can he play intricate patterns and play for a long time. I think that the same applies to flute playing, as you say in this very useful video. As a beginner flute player, thank you again!
@TheFlutePractice
@TheFlutePractice 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you and yes! It really applies to most instruments. Funny how learning to relax is somehow the most tricky part!
@rmoraespinto
@rmoraespinto 7 жыл бұрын
I think that teachers should frequently reinforce relaxing the tension that the majority of beginner/intermediate put into learning their instruments. In other words, teachers should find a way to stress that a relaxed approach is the key to play well; and that one only starts to play musically when he/she is able to relax ...

I have been playing flute for more than 30 years so I almost forgot how hard it was to play nice and clear low notes. Move your chin a bit forward and down, make sure your lips are in the correct position and try make your air flow wider. Not too much, just decrease the tension of your muscles
@Timzart7
@Timzart7 4 жыл бұрын
The easiest thing to try, and it can make a dramatic difference, is just to rotate the headjoint forward (counterclockwise) a few millimeters when putting your flute together, so it is forward of the classic inline position by a few millimeters. This angle is better for low notes for some people, and as long as it isn't extremely forward, the middle and high notes come out fine. Although I play naturally with an open throat, as if yawning, sometimes it helps me on low notes to think of opening the back of the throat a little extra. Lastly, if your tone is good on everything but the bottom four notes or so and you're sure your cork isn't leaking or there isn't some pad problem (which would be obvious when someone who has good low notes tries your flute and can't get them), try flute headjoints with a different shape of embouchure hole. You may find one that allows you to blast the low notes out with ease. Make sure it articulates cleanly, and sounds good on the other notes as well.

Hi, I'm relatively new to playing the flute. I can do a low E but whenever I try to do a low D it always comes out high. I'd be really grateful if you could give me some advice. Thank you!

I'm not sure if you've figured it out yet but I find that there's a sweet spot where your lips are stretched horizontally and the angle is down into the flute where low D to C play as strong as maybe mezzo forte. I've never gotten them any stronger than that lol.

I've been playing trumpet and flute, as I've made more progress with the brass embouchure now I can't quite hit the lowest note on the flute and could do it before? Muscle confusion?

Hello, could you advise on what to do when everything works well until I reach d1, then going lower there's no sound. Normally I can't complain about my low register but there are days when I just can't play it. I would feel more comfortable knowing that it's always there :) thank you!

Thank you for your encouragement and instruction. A question. I find hitting the low notes while working down a scale easier then just attempting to play the single note. Is that because the flute is already vibrating when you go to blow that low note during the process of playing a scale versus starting the vibration by playing the one note alone? I also wonder if my lips and blowing are making minor adjustments during the scale and everything is setup to hit the low note when I get there.

Hi! Your lips need to adjust depending on what register they are playing in. So when you move down the scale your lips are able to adjust bit by bit while jumping to the low notes means your lips have to make a bigger adjustment. Don't worry to much that you find this easier...it is actually very natural and the more you can practice getting to those low notes in a relaxed effortless manner the better! I also find sometimes what happens is that you try so hard to 'hit those low notes' that you use too much tension whereas going down the scale takes the pressure off a bit. I will hopefully do another video on low notes and some cool exercises to practice them!

Hello Tatiana. I recently obtained an Artley 18-0 and it has blue tint in places like yours. Is that an Artley? Also, I've discovered that toothpaste may be used with a cloth to 'compound' that blue away, (but who wouldn't want to keep it that way?) Thanks so much for the wonderful videos.

Thanks. I'm getting a nice round sound from low A to E, then my D is OK and finally the low C is very low in volume, but yet clear. How could I make it a little louder? Although, I think my issue is more psychological... being a tenor sax player, I'm used to loud sound on the low register. Any help would be appreciated. By the way, you crack me up, you must be super fun to be with:)

Hi! I think with those low notes they just need some time for the muscles in the embouchure to know exactly what to do and then build up strength in the right places to really increase the volume and push the sound a bit more. I am going to be looking at this in my current flute boot camp series if you are interested!

*_Here is another tip for Low C._*_ Get the Low C articulation started strongly by slapping the F key._ I don't know why this works, but it is something that my flute instructor suggested. It works amazingly.

how can I get a clear low C? I tried many times :( it only sounds a bit good if it's slurred from the low D. or how can I know if my flute may be damaged?
@TheFlutePractice
@TheFlutePractice 7 жыл бұрын
It is possible that some of the holes are not closing properly but if you are able to get it when slurring down from D it is possible that you embouchure is just not adjusting for the low register quick enough when you jump down. Tonguing low register is really difficult and really takes time. I have some ideas for this that I will hopefully share soon but start by practicing the low notes on "ha". It is nasty but with time and patience it really helped me!

is it possible to play a low B flat without the third pinky key?
@TheFlutePractice
@TheFlutePractice 4 жыл бұрын
Devon Killian so the low B is usually the lowest we can go (either the extra key) but there are a few tricks people have come up with depending if you have some time in the piece such as putting a piece of paper onto the end of the flute and transposing. Most of them are really not practical though so I would pretty much say...no. What do you need Bb for?

Cool video. Thanks for posting. So, should low notes be played more with a 'ha' than a 'ta'? The air comes more from the belly that way, right? All the best, from London.
@TheFlutePractice
@TheFlutePractice 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The note should start in the abdomen with the air, but definitely use a tongue to give it definition. You can almost think of a t”ha”
