Fly fishing for trout, fly fishing for Cutthroat in the Pacific Northwest has been a passion of mine for the last 40 years. I have spent most of my life fly fishing the great Pacific Northwest to include fly fishing in Alaska, fly fishing in Washington, fly fishing in Oregon, fly fishing in Idaho and fly fishing in Montana. I generally will fly fish and practice catch and release when fly fishing for trout, but I have been known to catch and cook during camping trips to many of my favorite fishing spots. I love to fly fish lakes in the higher elevation, though I have a few lowland lakes that are fly fishing only that are also on my most favorite list. I have a ton experience fly fishing rivers for trout and always enjoy discovering new rivers to fly fishing in and around the greater Pacific Northwest. @@FlyFishDan when I first learn how to cast I was learning on my lawn in t he front of my house everybody on the block thought and still probably think I was lossing I t lol . I just tell them it better to look dumb now instead of wasting time on the water only to figure out u don't know what u doing. In addition if u learn on the lawn at least u have the basic down pack because one u get on the water u have to learn about how to cast when ur line is water loading .Then thats really gonna get u frustrated if u don't know the basic

Great stuff, Dan. I’m really glad to see someone in my locale highlighting Washington state fly fishing. I’ve found the learning curve pretty high not having any friends who fly fish, but I’m determined to catch a fish on a fly rod one day… hopefully sooner than later.

Really like that you change your angles. Allot of videos only show only one view and I cannot see what is really happening with the fly line. I am currently practicing at a local park. Your video helps a ton.

This is the best.. this is exactly what i did over and over and learnt the double haul from doing it too. Obviously you are alot more professional and control. I lose the control eventually but having said that i only have a couple session of practice and on water

Good morning Dan! Awesome video. I've been self learning how to flyfish remote alaska. And watching your video certainly helped. I have a question I can't find on the internet yet though, how do you cast a light fly with lots of drag (does not want to fly anywhere) with any distance? I can't cast it further than 15 feet. I can cast a dolly lama over 60 feet. Thanks for your video!

almost looks like the forward cast flings the fly up instead of out. is that a good way to look at it?

Hello Steve! There will be several things that can influence the fly's movement beyond the fly line itself...from the length of leader, wind, weight of the fly, dry or streamer...typically and ideally, the fly will follow the tip of the rod during the cast (in most cases). Hope that helps!

@@stevecrawford333 that makes sense - typically my fly is running more parallel on a typical cast. I hold my fly rod out from my body and angled away (not completely vertical).

Im only on my 2nd try on casting. My line keeps making a bull whipping sound and i got blisters on my right casting hand. This normal?

Hello - this is not normal; the whipping sound is due to the fact that you are coming forward too quickly (and not allowing the line to fully extend behind you or in front of you)...slow your cadence down, let the line fully extend behind you and you will find it much easier to cast. Also - take a look at your grip...you shouldn't be getting blisters...you are likely holding on too tightly and using too much power. With finesse and practice, the line will cast very easy with little effort. Good luck on your practicing - don't give up!

I know this is an old vid but I thought I would ask if you include insight into what you do with your line holding hand in another vid? Is there an element of “feel” that you’re looking for? Are you confirming what your cast arm, rigging, etc is doing while casting by feeling weight or pull on the line? Just curious, I’ve been fly fishing for a while, however, I feel like an amateur when I’m fishing. I’ve had lots of success fly fishing but I feel like the credit should be given to the line manufacturers, fly tiers, and the simplicity of fish minds…not my casting or presentation at all. I’ve never taken lessons…so I find it hard to critique my own cast, or to grow and improve.

That hand certainly stays busy - the two biggest things you'll be doing with your non casting hand is keeping any slack from happening and stripping in fly line (putting action on the fly). You should be in contact with your fly line 99.9% of the time with your non casting hand. Hope that answers your question!

@@FlyFishDan I usually use the stripping hand for, like u said; stripping and assisting with action…I’m limited to smaller, freshwater creeks and shoreline lake/pond casting (due to my local area here in Canada) and, I feel, it never introduces me to a broader range of casting platforms and requirements. So I always feel like a juvenile and unsure of what to work on with both hands during casting lol. Thanks so much for your feedback. Much appreciated. 🤗

This all has similarities to a golf swing. A guy really does need to spend some time with an instructor to have that extra set of eyes helping see where the trouble spots are. Also, if you're kind of "self taught" maybe there is some foundational things that need to be corrected. I'm super frustrated with my fishing. I want to find a clinic or something to "iron out some kinks"
