Fly fishing is frustrating, trout fishing is a lot more appealing when there is nothing else to catch. Can we get a hint about the "banger" of a video???? 👀

@1Rod1ReelFishing I know this sounds weird, but do you think I could catch a bass on a bobber alone (and a hook)? Maybe adding in some 'walk-the-dog' action?

Using a tapered leader will definitely give you more pin-point accuracy. You can tie your own up with four or five pieces of gradually heavier trilene bloodlined together.

I've been fly fishing for about 10 years and I totally agree with your dude there. Don't get caught up in the gear junkie game in fly fishing when starting out. In fact my dream to to start a channel on how to get started fly fishing with the minimum bare essentials and starting techniques. This video is absolute pleasure. Thanks for trying out new things and letting us go along for the ride.

One tip: when you are hooking a fish make sure that you don't pull from above your pointer finger, and you put the line under the pointer finger while hooking, to keep the line tight. Your casting is great, but one thing is that if you don't want to hook yourself is by raising your arm up a little bit, also when casting back, look back to make sure that it forms a loop and if you are not looking, make sure that you don't hear snapping, that means you're going to fast with you casting and you must slow down to not lose your fly.
@andrewdg90
@andrewdg90 2 жыл бұрын
Fly fishing for wild trout is definitely my favourite. Using 6lb trilene for a leader isn't wrong necessarily, but tapered leaders have better turn over, distance, and accuracy for sure!
@mattphillippi5849
@mattphillippi5849 2 жыл бұрын
Really, that's more necessary for dries, though. I just use straight line for streamers all the time. It's when I need the delicate presentation that I turn to my tapered leaders.
@andrewdg90
@andrewdg90 2 жыл бұрын
@@mattphillippi5849 even running a nymphing rig it definitely helps with turnover and handling while false casting. Not that it can't be done with straight line, but I've done both and using a tapered leader helps a lot. When it comes to being delicate, use a lighter X leader, or mainly using more tippet to get a longer: 12-16' overall leader/tippet length. It's such a fun sport and you can make it as basic or as technical as you'd like haha
@andrewdg90
@andrewdg90 2 жыл бұрын
@Wug yeah It really depends on the application, and personal preference. But for the most part I'm almost 100% of the time using a tapered leader just in different size/X depending on if I'm fishing 2, 4, or 5wt. But I cut down a tapered leader a foot or two and then to a tippet ring to the tippet. It's been fantastic for dry, dry dropper, or just nymphing. I don't streamer fish much lol. Lately it's been a 5x tapered leader to 6x tippet to a small dry to 7x to a small nymph on my 2wt. It's got great turnover even with minimal line out in tight areas. It is always interesting to see other people's ideas, techniques, etc!

As a long-time fly fisherman, who has fished around the world for some of the largest, wildest trout under extremely challenging conditions, I must say the best technique involves tying a 1/32 oz Panther Martin to a 4 lb leader, and using the fly rod as a spinning rod. I challenge to go head to head against any conventional fly rod angler any day, anytime, anywhere
@jonmullins8460
@jonmullins8460 2 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised and happy that the technique guys haven't been in here complaining. I'm just getting back into fly fishing and will be taking a trip in a couple weeks. This video has me excited. One piece of advice. When working the fly in the water, try wrapping the index finger of your rod hand under the line then strip with your free/reel hand from behind your rod hand instead of in front. This way you'll have fewer chances of losing control of the line. As far as casting, you're already better than me. I'm out here looking like I'm casting spells instead of flies. Anyway, It's great to see you guys out in a stream and promoting conservation.

When you strip a streamer, point the rod tip toward the streamer, keep you rod down. that will impart better action to your fly. When you strip pointing the streamer, you will set the hook when you strip. No need to set hook and no lost on fish when it strike.
