The Blue winged olive mayfly is one of the most widespread mayflies in the world. A very important food source for trout, this fly is a full season hatch begining here in March and lasting into October. The best thing about a rainy day is the BWO hatch. The trout know the fly and love the hatch.

Been tying for many years. Not really interested in tying techniques, just new ideas. Really like this one. Good job!

Well I can say about the same for techniques as I would not say I have many. I am just trying to put together patterns that work on fooling the fish and most of my flies are as the result of what I am seeing the fish eat. There are times when that does not matter either but at least I know I am trying to give myself the best chance. So much has to do with all of the other things. Approach, presentation and the bugs that are happening on that given day. I take a lot of video while fishing and then use it for identification as well as timeline. I can use my past videos to know insect hatches and times of years and even the spots on the river that the trout hold. Thanks and all the best.

great tie Matt, you could use a clip and use that to get the fur off the skin, similar to the petijean technique for CDC loops.

Jeff Jackson The olives are such a big part of the season out here east. Unlike some of the other mayflys they are around all season. That puts the trout more on them. Glad you liked it. Hope you have a great season. It won't be long now. All the best.

@@ChrisWalklet .Hi Chris, I am from Northern Ireland however, I am stranded in Asia because of the bug. I cannot travel as I have an impaired immune system. I am 76 years old and was taught to tie flies when I was 6 years old. I have tied flies in about 20 countries, I always take my kit with me. I am 99% dry fly but do enjoy the odd bit of nymphing. I am so glad that I have my kit here otherwise I would go crazy. I own just over a mile and a half of the river Maine back home, great trout fishing with a fair run of salmon. We have a unique trout there called Dollaghan which are fantastic to fish for. Be safe and stay away from the bug. Tight Lines Reg

Great pattern , I will often tie these down to 22s with long tails like yours . Killer tail water and spring creek pattern. If you get a chance listen to Kenny Wayne Shephard and BB do this song on Kenny’s album 10 days out I think you might like it :-) Happy Trails
@ChrisWalklet
@ChrisWalklet 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the heads up I will definitely check it out. Yes the small olives are more precise but it is very good to have the small ones especially right now. I am not even sure iff 22 is too large. Its crazy frustrating but great at the same time. As frustrating as it can be it is nice to have when they just don't cooperate.

It can be crazy , they get like Tricos . Years ago I stomach pumped a fish and the midges and Betis were like size 30 ! I used to tie down to 24 but it did not seem to make any difference then a 22 . If that’s all they want to eat I just grab my streamer rod and chunk a double streamer set up , that seems to do the trick:-)

Hey Chris, love the videos! As a beginner, could you recommend several c-clamp vises under $200 that would be quality and I would be happy with. Rotary no necessary. Only tying for myself in the southwest. I think this fly would land me a large brown in the White Mountains of Arizona. Thanks, Dave

I only know of what I use. Regal its all I will ever need. Easy and a joy to work with the handlebar release. Not sure how much they go for but I am sure it will be the last one I own too. Make sure you pack some grifiths gnat size 14-16. There are so many patterns out there. A few good ones and knowing the seasons where you fish. That is key. Have 2 trout on my bucket list from down that way. Gilla trout and Apache trout. Thanks for the note.

They really are so deadly I started tying with CDC way back when it first started showing up in fly shops when I lived in Frisco CO fishing the Eagle and Blue rivers replaced Adams style flies with CDC parachute I make emergers and nymphs with CDC all I use anymore. Some dry shake once in a while and they’ll float all day too even after catches.

What did you use for the tailing material on this pattern. I'm a little newer to tying dry flies, so I am sorry for the naive question.
@ChrisWalklet

You can use micro fibetts or coq de leon or similar hen hackle fibers. Fine paint brush bristles work well as well.

While I can't deny the CDC is nice and wispy (wing-like) a simple Poly wing works just as well. Simple ties catch.

Many times the olives are the food of choice. It is always good to have them in different styles and sizes parachute, emerges, dun etc. I just returned from the drift less region in Wisconsin and the largest fish was caught on a size 20 parachute BWO. Hope it works for you.

I tie a bwo thorax dun very similar to that fly with a single cdc wing and blue dun colored dry fly hackle I already see you have the best hackle for the bwo haha but I tie my body as just thread and add a touch of thin uv rezon hit it with a uv light then tie my wing in then my hackle take 2 wraps of hackle behinde the wing and 2 in front whip finish my head then later trim a v shape under the fly to get the hackle and fly to ride flush with the water I've abused one fly through 8 fish before it started falling apart during a iron blue dun hatch I tie them in dozens before hand I also tie a sulpher dun silimar with a light grey cdc wing a orange flex i floss body and light ginger colored hackle on a size 14 hook
@ChrisWalklet
@ChrisWalklet 4 жыл бұрын
Sounds like some great patterns. I like the grey cdc on the sulfer their wings can be slate color. Thats a hard hatch for me I will have to try that. The fish are very picky for that hatch anything might help. All the best.
