During this fly tying tutorial, I tie the E/C Caddis (emergent / cripple) created by Ralph Cutter. This is a great pattern when fishing over pressured trout, especially in tailwater situations. On those waters, the cold temperatures can slow the emergence, making patterns like this one perfect imitations.
Here are some great resources to learn more about this pattern and to see the color change during a caddis emergence:

Nice video. I agree with Earl about the lighting. When I tie your flies I try to use the exact materials. There have been many times you show the package (i.e. SLF Spikey Squirrel) you are dubbing with and I use the same exact color dubbing, but your dubbing color looks so much different on camera than my own. I always attributed it to manufacturing variation. Thanks again.

Great comment, John Novak , and I know exactly what you mean. I try to be very specific when listing materials and displaying them while tying, mainly so I can ensure that everyone watching can replicate as desired. The lighting definitely changes things, as I become aware when editing the video. With that said, I do believe that there may also be slight variations in the materials, but not enough that the trout seem to mind! Thanks again for the positive comments. TC

I don’t have a photo, I would imagine you could find one on google. If you listen to Ralph’s interview on the “Ask about fly fishing” podcast, he talks about this.

Found one and emailed you. Ralph explains why he uses the loop tail is it looks more like a shuck. The fly shops didn’t like it because the flies would get caught in the tail section and wanted a straight tail! Listen to the podcast when you have a chance, it’s very good.

Thanks for the fast comments, Earl; I really appreciate it. In these videos, I am definitely trying to be more detailed in the explanation of patterns, aside from just tying. Thanks for the feedback, and I'll be sure to continue in this path. Tim

Thanks for the kind words, Marco Esquandolas , and be sneaky with the dog! Ha ha. In reality, I get a significant amount of dubbing every time we brush our dog, thus it works out really well. Thanks again for the comments, and good luck with this pattern. Tim

Great fly tim! I have not yet experimented with this "hybrid" of fly but for sure it is one I will try. Can't see why it wouldn't work.

Now I want to shave a clump off my friend's labradoodle. If he catches me I'm blaming you Tim! This fly looks great and really buggy. I really like caddis of all sorts. I'm going to tie some of these up and give them a try below my favorite bottom release dam. Thank you for putting this video together.

Great fly Tim, I miss the tube fly tying already. This is a great looking fly. When you said you were going to tie it parachute style, I thought, why did he cut the deer hair then? After seeing you do it, It does look really good. All the best to yourself and your family. God bless, and say hi to Uncle John for me... OK Sean

Hi Sean Mooney , and good to hear from you. I know what you mean about the lack of tube fly tying on my end! For this pattern, the tie is definitely innovative, and very buggy looking. A great pattern that draws the attention of fly fishermen and trout alike. Thanks for the kind words, and I wish the best for your family. Tim

Excellent, detailed description for tying this fly. I live in Canada and cannot find Antron or Z-lon, so what could I use as a substitute? I don’t know how stiff or heavy that material is. Will any polyester type of material work? Keep up the great work! Thanks Jean

Thanks for the kind words, Jean Girard ; I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the video. A poly yarn will definitely work as an alternative, though the makers of Zelon believe it is impossible to replicate their product. If you don't have Zelon or antron, definitely go with a polyester. Here's a brief article regarding differences between Zelon and Antron: www.blue-ribbon-flies.com/how-to/antron_vs_zelon/ Thanks again! TC
