This well known Welsh pattern represents a small beetle of the same name (red & black) that is found along the river and lake banks of the Welsh countryside. One of the classic peacock herl patterns that trout just love. Here’s the correct way of tying it. Visit my site thefeatherbender.com

Caught my first trout on this fly at Llandinam on the upper Severn 1979 and many more since, I will now copy your method of tying, thanks for sharing.

Thank you, For reference, the red tag was designed by a Mr Martyn Flynn from Worcestershire, England in the 1850s, so it's what is known as a North Country wet fly.

Nice fly Barry close to a lead wing fished in rivers that have caddis and it’s a sure bet. Thanks for the tip on the hero. I use a lot of it. I’ll pay more attention now.

I have tied a great many Coch-y-Bonddu over the years. Not a single one has been tied with the amazing accuracy of yours. I suppose they all catch fish, but I bet yours catch them with greater pride in their work.

I could tell you a funny story about this fly. My late grandad used to wing up his Welsh mate by calling this fly the Cock a Bundy. This one is a good one and an old favourite. Though its a long time ago I managed a four pound wild brownie from Loch Arkaig on this one. Oddly enough I haven't seen this one much of late and I have seen a number of Coch's that don't look anything like this one. But your version is the one I always new as the Coch-y Bonddu

If you use a small amount of superglue on the underbody before winding the peacock herl there is no need for the dubbing loop and it makes for a almost indestructible body.

The feather bender. I was on holiday in Goa and went to an all day market and got a couple of dozen peacock feathers for a few rupees, that was back in 2007 and I still have plenty left and of terrific quality. But thanks for the tip of lining the herl up to wind it on and having it lying back in the perfect position. Cheers Jimf

Excellent tying Mr Clark but again your pronunciation of the Bonddu is incorrect so whoever informed you that its sound is a " d " misled you, the correct sound of a double d in Welsh as is the dd of this fly is the sound you get when you press your tongue to the top row of teeth then breath out

There maybe exceptions but classical Welsh dd sounds like a softer th. I thoroughly enjoy your precise and detailed neat tying , you and Davie Mcphail and very few others about the most professional examples you see on utube

Also i dont think i would catch fish on any of your flies. I fish very pressured stillwaters with very few anglers keeping fish making it extremely tough. U have to down size every fly to sizes 18 20

Hi Daniel, thanks! Just tie them smaller...
@techmick1399
@techmick1399 2 жыл бұрын
This fly is a killer in any size. Of course, in stillwaters, you can use very long leaders, thin tippets ans so on. Try to tie your small stillwater midge flies with a body of only one herl of peacock or just black 30 D thread and a small hen hackle...As thin as possible and use an open loop knot....that will work.

@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel, with a name like Davies, you should know that the silly name is Welsh and this fly has probably been around since before a Black & peacock spider.
