Thank you for showing the old school and less common flies like you do. It is kinda cool to fish the flies that maybe our grandfathers used. Keep up the great work!

Nice fly.I have some in my fly box for sea trout. I didn’t know what they were called I just copied them from a fly in my dad’s fly box. He had that box for years, it is old .I’m 71 now but remember it from when we first went fishing over 60 years ago. Happy memories. Many thanks.

I’m from Cowansville and always took pride in tying and fishing that pattern. Unfortunately, there are no salmons or trouts in the streches of the Yamaska river that cross the town (it’s now a warmwater fisherie because of agriculture and daming upstream), but the tributaries still hold brookies eager to hit a Montreal. Thanks for sharing the history and tying it so beautifuly.

Thanks Darren. Funny you mentioned Don. I had JUST replied to another comment on here that if you want to see some of the best wet flies in the world, check out Don Bastion's. I think he used darker turkey for his Montreal (which I think some actually call the pattern the "Dark Montreal"). Good Morning Sir Matt, The Montreal is totally awesome looking, I've never tried tying a fly like that... sometimes I feel i'll jack up the wing so I let intimidation get the best of me. Now I have to try it, i'll let you know how it goes. Thank you so much Sir Matt I'm so amazed by your skills at fly tying and i'm learning so much from you. :o)
@SavageFlies3 жыл бұрын
Edward, don't be intimidated by these winged wet flies. Sure they can be challenging to get perfect wings, but the trick there is to use good quality feathers. Some of the duck pairs you'll get aren't really good for this, but you can usually find a couple of matching slips from even a bad pair of feathers. But the best thing... even a badly tied wing will still catch fish! Have a great weekend my friend. :-)

Hello Matt, great video again. I am from Washington State and a lot of salmon fly patterns actually originated from my state. It would be cool to see a Sol Duc pattern or a Skykomish Sunrise on the channel. Not sure if you have ever tried this but for the tinsel on the back (and even sometimes on the body) I will use a thin UV adhesive to lightly coat the tinsel so when a buck brookie or cutthroat takes the fly it doesnt rip the tinsel loose. Just a though. Love the channel once again. Let me know if you need recipes for any of the west coast salmon fly patterns. Id be happy to share
@SavageFlies3 жыл бұрын
Antonio- I love the looks of the Skykomish Sunrise and have had that on my to-do list for a couple of months now. Since you asked about it, I'll move it up on the priority list! I've never fished or tied it, but it's a really beautiful pattern. Hopefully it's got a cool history to it as well. :-)

Just happened to be reading thru a book that was gifted to me yesterday and stumbled across the Montreal .. Poul Jorgensen's Book of Fly Tying
@SavageFlies3 жыл бұрын
That's interesting Alex. Did Jorgensen consider it a trout fly? I just stumbled across it in one more book as well-- Claude Chartrand's 1987 "The Art of Fly Tying." He mentioned a little bit of the history and said it's also good for bass and walleye when tied in bigger sizes.
@TheAlex00263 жыл бұрын
@@SavageFlies he actually has it in the wet fly section for trout, sizes 6-14, which are the same sizes suggested for almost all the flies in this section. This section contains all the classics, royal coachman, Professor, pheasant tail soft hackle, gold ribbed hares ear, partridge and orange, etc
@TheAlex00263 жыл бұрын
@@SavageFlies March brown, light Cahill, dark Hendrickson , guess he's considering it a may fly type of imitation
@SavageFlies3 жыл бұрын
@@TheAlex0026 It sure sounds like it, but I would think there's too much red in this one for any mayfly that I know of. I thought if it as kind of an attractor pattern.

I wonder if the remainder from the tail could be wrapped around the body, rather than the floss. I suppose, since the body stayed pretty streamlined with the floss, it wouldn’t make much difference. I think I’ll try a couple of these and experiment with some colors!! Thank you Matt!
@SavageFlies3 жыл бұрын
That's actually a pretty cool idea. The body wouldn't be as smooth as silk or floss, but it could look pretty cool. And would definitely be an easier fly to tie. I think I'm going to experiment with the idea. Thanks for the note!
@wdtaut56502 жыл бұрын
6:08 Old patterns called it a claret because that's what it is. You can use red but the pattern calls for claret. They aren't the same, but the fish won't care.
