3 жыл бұрын

Created by Al Troth in the early 1960s for fishing the Madison for big brown trout, the Troth Bullhead is an effective bullhead or sculpin pattern tied heavily weighted and fished along the bottom anywhere these baitfish live.
Hook: #4-10 streamer
Weight: 0.020 wraps
Tail: Peacock herl over black marabou over white bucktail
Body: White yarn
Shellback: same herl and marabou
Head/Collar: Spun deer hair
This pattern can be found in: Dick Stewart's, "Flies for Bass and Panfish," 1992, amzn.to/3aGpFs1

Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. I've been uploading three new tying videos a week, with the occasional extra video on other days.
Thanks for stopping by. Please let me know in the comments if you have any tying tips you would like to share or if you have any patterns you would like to see tied here.

Excellent! And hey, I've got a request for your steelhead trips. Since I haven't been yet and am living vicariously through you and a couple other steelheaders, how about I send you some steelhead flies to try this fall? I'm going to tie up a dozen or so for Brian Feeney and the only thing I ask is to send me a picture if you land any monsters. I'm sure you're pretty well set with all your own ties, but I'd be happy to send you some as well. (Especially the ones with an experimental flavor. Ie, we're coming up a yellow one and calling it the Banana Split. Cheesy, but I think it's going to look cool!)

@@SavageFlies Fishing was pretty good. Had some interesting weather while we out, dealt with some forest fire smoke and ended up storm stayed for an extra night. 50mph winds are not nice for lake travel. Yeah, I think I know what you're talking about. We have a big catfish in the south called a bullhead, but when I was researching I saw some sculpins called bullheads too. I'm not sure what Al Troth was imitating when he created this but I was assuming it was the catfish fry. But who knows...

Thanks Daryl. As for that Stonfo razor tool, it's pretty convenient but I'm not sure it's worth its price of $27. It does make it a bit easier, but it hasn't saved me from cuts. I think I've nicked my fingers more WITH that thing than by holding a razor directly in my fingers. :-)

This is the type of collar that the old timer fly tiers in Southern Appalachia used to call a Piccadil. I have rarely ever seen the term used in Trout fly manuals but the old English tradition fly tyers used it. I think Isaak Walton referenced it once. Came from the Piccadil, which was the weird Bozo the Clown collars that they wore in Elizabethan England. (Think depictions of William Shakespeare). It was one of the weird fashion accessories that both men and women of the time both wore. Of course, that's where the name Piccadilly Circus came from... That was were the fancy pants haberdashers were in late 1500s London.

Ignore my last. Here it is! And great comment. I'm serious, I'm going to research this. Great stuff. Now for the bad dad joke I told my guys at work last week... Dan walks into the book store and asks the clerk if he could help him find a play by Shakespeare. The clerk says, "Sure, which one." And Dan says, "Uhhh... William." (Dan is one of my senior scientists, PhD physicist, so extremely smart and well read. A fun little dig. :-) )
@RyanAshley419
@RyanAshley419 3 жыл бұрын
@@SavageFlies I have tried to research it but have not found a whole lot on the term. I honestly haven't heard or seen anyone use the term Piccadil flies since I was a kid, and that was some extremely elderly mountain folk. It may very well be an oral mountain tradition, as far as I can tell.

No experience with this pattern, Matt, but I have seen bass spit out tiny black bullheads a couple times. This should work to mimic them. I might switch to a darker head color. Thanks for sharing.
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 3 жыл бұрын
Good call on the darker head color Jim. I would have also, but my patch of dark hair was sub-par and not spinning very well. I do imagine this pattern to be fished in the deep, darker water so maybe the color won't be too big a deal. Thanks for the note!

I always liked this pattern from when I first saw it in Joe Brooks' Trout Fishing. It was a size comparison of Troth's tie of Brooks' Blonde on big 3/0 salmon hooks set beside the Bullhead and a size 4 Muddler that was dwarfed by the big Bullhead and the huge Blondes. I didn't know how it was tied, when I found a recipe it called for ostrich herl, which I didn't have. Guess I loss interest and got charmed by muddlers. I know better now and could have sub'd another material like marabou. But one thing that stayed the same, for a "bottom feeder", bullhead are very tasty. :o) Thanks for the great tie Matt, have a good one.
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 3 жыл бұрын
Appreciate it Joe! And you're spot on with the marabou vs peacock herl vs ostrich. I've seen this very pattern with some combination of all three. Funny thing about ostrich herl... it seems more delicate and dainty than peacock herl, but I've found it to actually be tougher. Maybe I've just got a plume from a tough bird, but we should probably tie more with black ostrich herl. The stuff looks pretty good. Thanks for the note. :-)
@joeduca8582

@@SavageFlies Yeah ostrich must be more resilient, they make feather dusters out of them. That's where my original meager supply of ostrich came from. In fact one of the hardware chains had a dollar bin full of dusters. But these were made of feathers, like very long stem turkey flats. I have some in a bright green and two of different shades of hot pink. I've used the top parts for wing slips on muddlers and the fluff as dubbing or spun in a loop. I've read Emu is very good too. It's structure holds air and this tier in a Fly Tyer article uses it for dry flies as well as nymphs. Hey, can you imagine celebrating Thanksgiving in Africa, you could feed the Flintstones, the Rubbles and most of Bedrock with a roast Ostrich! You wouldn't have any fights over the drumsticks either... well maybe with Dino and Fred ;o)
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 3 жыл бұрын
@@joeduca8582 Joe- I recall that article on emu feathers. I haven't stumbled across any yet, but haven't gone out of my way looking for any either. Now I love the idea of getting a feather duster of ostrich. What do you think of this thing? amzn.to/3zyfYXl Yeah, it's mostly feathers, but if each of those fibers could be used for something, like a midge thorax, right behind a bead... this ten dollar duster could make a lifetime of flies! I could even pluck a few feathers out the next time I'm dyeing materials and make some black, brown and probably reds. So many possibilities in this hobby! Now your Flintstones reference... awesome! I'm 50 now and grew up watching the Flintstones after school. And I've got every season on DVD when I tried to introduce my kids to them. They were all "meh" whatever Dad. But oh man, good memories. :-)

@@SavageFlies Matt for that price, compared to a single "prime" plume from a fly shop or a craft/fabric store, I'd grab it if I were you. Wapsi's web site has a page of different ostrich feather types plus pics of different patterns. Moonlight(?) feathers bulk prices are steeeeeeeep! I guess the caveat is length of herl for your application on the pattern. You won't know until you have it in hand, but you'd still have an awesome feather duster - worthy of one of those maids Benny Hill chases ;o) Yeah, what do kids know. I have about 20 years on ya and we watched the Flintstones too - much better than playing "pong". Do a search on You Tube for roasting a whole ostrich. I found it while googling ostrich. It's an American BBQ joint in Vietnam(?) I think. Anyway this "foodie" channel posted it. 150 pound bird brined, smoked, roasted whole. Took a couple days. Just like "Mikey", they'll eat anything :o)

Can someone help me get started with materials?! I have all the tools and some materials I just feel like every video someone is using something different like is there some sort of good kit out there or something anyone could recommend that has endless hackle and furs
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 3 жыл бұрын
Trey, I picked up this kit a couple years ago and it was a pretty good one for dubbing and various feathers. amzn.to/3BNfxu1 Note, there is no dry fly hackle in this, but it's got some pretty cool dubbing. For dry fly hackle, the first thing I'd get are a couple of "neck chunks" by Hareline in Grizzly and Brown. Two other things I would get right off would be a hare's mask and bucktail. Send me an email if you want and I could give you a few more recommendations. (matt@savageflies.com)
