I REALLY appreciate your clear explanation of not only explaining the size of the tippets but also in pairing up which ones to use with what flies, helps me a lot. Some people have plenty of knowledge but are NOT teachers which creates a lot of fustration for all involved. You have the gift of teaching, Thanks. Just remember to bring your rain gear on your next trip. Lol

Your explanation of leaders and tippets cleared up my confusion about what to use and when. At the store I get overwhelmed by all the choices and X’s. When I’m fishing and switching flies out I never thought about the effect of not matching the lines to what I was casting. I’ve been tying on my own tippet #4 mono from an old ultra light setup, but after seeing this I will invest some money and to do it correctly. My go to knot for joining lines is either a blood knot or double uni knot. I usually use a blood knot for the tippets, with my fat fingers and bad vision it’s the only one that I can manage on this thin line. I have tied the surgeons knot in the past, but don’t usually use it, is it a better knot for tippets? Thanks again great advice I’ll put into practice, now I need some fish to complete the rest of the process.
@FlyFishDan
@FlyFishDan Ай бұрын
You bet! Thanks for watching and for the great comment. I think the knot boils down to preference - your choice knots will work just fine vs. the double surgeon. My dad taught me the knot I use way back in the day, and that's why I still use that knot exclusively myself.

Thank you for the great how to videos, I'm a beginner in this style of fishing. My late father taught us all we needed to know about fishing, but nothing about fly fishing. He always wanted to try it but never got the chance. That is the reason I'm trying to learn about fly fishing. Bought a cheap rod and reel of Amazon to start with the Classic Martin fly rod and a few flies it came with. Hopefully, by watching your videos, I can learn a few things and not look like a noob out there in the water. Lol. Keep doing what your doing , it's awesome to watch and learn from your videos. 💯👍

For Christmas my daughter bought me a new set.up thank goodness with the help of dad. I have always been confused about leaders and tippet because the volunteers have always rigged my line. I am now ready to pursue my own interests in obtaining my own rigs and understanding the leader and tippet advantage. Please consider me for your set of leaders and tippet. Tight lines Dan. Steve J.

Hey there I’m a new sub from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 😁 & new to fly fishing I’ve only been out half a dozen times & yet to catch I’ve always baited or spin fished for wild browns in my local rivers but now I want to get into fly fishing which I’ve tried a couple of times over the years but as I never caught anything & not having a clue what I was doing I quickly gave in but now I have everything I need ie proper chest waders & good wading boots a new rod & reel a net a great fly vest with a backpack attached & all the accessories I need ie Gink floating gel with the little holder to clip on to my vest I even got the powder version that dries & floats the flies a few reels of tippet a tippet holder for my vest snips pliers & a great selection of flies in a nice little 4 section fly box however I need to get a new braided loop as my cat mangled my current one & I want to try tapered leaders 🤷🏼‍♂️ I’ve just been using tippet to make my leaders but that can be expensive so I want to try a tapered leader I already cast ok but I believe I’ll be better using a T.L it’s taken me a few views of videos to try to work out which size X to use but after hearing you explain I now get it BUT I have a question 😳 I use an 8ft rod 4W & I’ll be using mostly size 14/16 flies so from listening to what you’ve said I think I’m best to go for a 4 X Tapered leader I’ll also buy a pack of 5X to use once I’ve gotten used to using the 4 X so my question is what length would you recommend I’ve only seen 7.5 ft 9ft 12ft + As I’ve got an 8ft rod I’m guessing I should get 9ft & maybe cut 6 inches off or should I just use the 9ft as it is 🤷🏼‍♂️ Sorry for that long comment I get carried away talking about fishing & I’m absolutely itching to get out to wet a line but the weather over here has been the strangest I’ve ever witnessed in my nearly 50 years we’ve had maybe 5 days of lovely blue sky & sunny with no clouds but too hot 🥵 then it’s rained so much for it being summer but now it seems to be easing up I want to get out take it easy & Tight lines ✌🏼💙🎣🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👍🏼

Excellent content, you presented it well. Old school here. The leader and tippet is the business end. When I was new to fly fishing, there was no internet, books and figure things out in your own. Today I enjoy building my own leaders. Perfection loop , blood knot, non slip loop knot and I’m in business. I enjoyed the video. I’m glad you touched base on the Mono floating and Fluorocarbon sinking. Many people forget that. Dry flys. Then mono helps it float. Streamers and getting down in the water column, do with Fluorocarbon. Great video Dan, hopefully it will reach many. 👍🎣

I'm getting back into Fly fishing after a long time away. Your shows have been a big help and are presented in an easy-to-understand way. Any future shows on New to Fly Fishing would be appreciated. I'm saltwater fishing now.

Dan great information as I have only been fly fishing for 3 years now, I mostly use Rio power flex and would like to try the Cartland tippet and tapered fly line. Again great job with the videos it seems like I always learn something from them and enjoy watching you catch fish. See ya on the water 😊

Hey Dan. I loved the video. I've been using Cortland lines and leaders for nearly forty years. I've fished them for everything from trout to bonefish to salmon and in my humble opinion, they are the best. Fish on!
