In 1994, Carey Lohrenz made history as one of the first women to fly the F-14 Tomcat, the sound-barrier-breaking, deadly fighter jet made famous by the film Top Gun. But in the years leading up to Lohrenz’s graduation from the Navy’s flight school, women were not legally allowed to assume combat roles, including flying combat aircraft. In 1993, prompted by the exemplary service of female soldiers in the Gulf War, then Secretary of Defense Les Aspin lifted the Combat Exclusion Policy for military aviators. Just five women were selected for these highly coveted positions. For Lohrenz, this meant she would get to train on her first choice, the F-14 Tomcat. But roughly one year later, in a devastating turn of events, Lohrenz was grounded. Despite the formal reinstatement of her flight status, Lohrenz ultimately decided to retire from the military and forge a new path, one illuminated by integrity, hard work and optimism. Now, as a motivational speaker and strategic business consultant, she inspires others to act in the face of fear.

Conversely, if you have no experience flying F-16's and have not performed aircraft carrier landing, then you have very little credibility unless you can verify what you say via credible sources, e.g., F-16 pilots or instructors. Just my opinion...The F-14 Tomcat was the most menacing looking fighter plane I've ever seen. It looked like a wasp... just the look of it looked like it would sting u. Also like a lion...it wasn't as fast as the cheetah, or as agile as a panther, but it was the most ferocious of the bunch. Tomcat, in my book, is the greatest and most beautiful jet I've ever seen 😍😼

I mean, in fairness, the F14 is like the third fastest fighter in inventory with a top speed of Mach 2.34. It's also VERY maneuverable... among the teen series fighter, the tightest turn radius and turn rates which match the F16 in sustained and instantaneous turn rate. Her only real down side is roll rate at slow speed and high angle of attack (slow speed) fighting. She's a great aircraft and quite lethal for her size in visual range or out of it at long ranges!

Never got my opportunity to serve. At 17 in 1979 I blew out a knee. So no chance to live my dream. It started early, Point Magu, then Norfolk, Outside Meridian at a backwoods facility in 1969 where the Tomcat was finishing development. Then to Mayport where my Father took the Tomcat to sea. I was a Navy brat with dreams. In 75 we went to San Diego. There I spent hundreds of hours out in the hills around Miramar ( not an area one was allowed to be) my faithfull German Shepherd at my side. All I wanted to do was fly one of those beautiful beasts. That ended the day they took me to Balboa after a dirt bike wreck. Still I have never lost my love for the Tomcat. So many memories.

I served 7 years, active duty Army, followed by 18 years in law enforcement. Law enforcement had issues towards female officers also. Personally, I didn't care if the officer backing me up was male, or female. They were trained as I was and passed their training. To me, they were just as qualified and deserved to be working. As a Chief of Police. I didn't tolerate disrespect towards any women officers. If men had issues, they were told to find another department to work at, or leave their issues at home. God bless any women, who works and fights to achieve their goals. I have two daughters. They have always been told to follow their dreams and do whatever they want to do. Women, like this pilot, set an amazing example for not only my girls, bit all women.

Ive noticed the young female officers can be rather hot headed. They especially have issues with sensibility towards certain things. A father with a baby in his car who drives wrecklessly or if they pull over a grown man that larger... ive had various encounters with female cops to whom i treat like any other officer. Yet, have noticed certain issues and stigmas that sorta translate back to gender. Men might not be so sensitive to an issue just because a baby is involved. Or feel either a need to demand more maturity from a guy just cause he is a man...

I think the issue (possibly incorrectly) when it comes to the army and training ground troops is that women are not subjected to the same level of physical requirements as their male counterparts. From what I understand, female soldiers when deployed aren’t really frontline as such..they are used at times to accompany male troops on certain missions, and to sometimes deescalate certain situations such as speaking to the family after their house may be raided by troops. Obviously appreciate women pilots such as Carey were frontline. And police officers are too.

I served in the Navy 83-89 and for 3 of those years, I was stationed on the IKE as an Approach Controller in CATCC. At the time, women were not integrated on combatant ships and it use to piss me off because , the women in my class, all went to cushy shore duty jobs whilst all the guys had to go to the fleet, which isn't necessary shangri-La (those of you serving enlisted on a ship know what I mean) Certainly there are jobs which men are more adept at succeeding at (such as SEAL training) but I would say that there isn't a job in the Navy which a women can't do. I am surprised Ward did not mention that one of the first woman pilots was killed landing and results of the investigation showed her scores were in fact far too low to have been selected for the F-14. She was perhaps pushed to prove woman could do it. That may have been why they did not want another woman killed and erred on the side of safety. Ward Carrol did an entire program on this on his KZfaq channel .

I guess this is true, but it would undermine the value of the women that did make it flying the F-14 and other combat aircraft, while not really adding anything to the story being told. I also think that it would be very judgmental and prejudiced to ground other female pilots based solely on the fact that such a mishap did happen to a female pilot, on the grounds of "females are not fit to fly these aircraft". While that is pretty much what happened with Lohrenz' carrier landing grading I am uncertain that that singular mishap you mentioned can be attributed with grounding other female pilots unfairly in a direct manner, especially in connection to Lohrenz' grounding.

@@simx98 I think it adds tons to the story. Because when the words come up "her flight status was returned...she never flew the F14 again" you are left to believe her flight status refers to that of the F14. And that she did not return to it because of her choosing, not otherwise. Misdirection at its finest. (not surprising from the military tbh). Knowing the full truth NEVER takes anything away from the story, but telling half truths only undermines the storyteller's credibility (not the protagonist's). Nothing takes away from what she accomplished. Under more pressure than her male counterparts, with the weight of a gender on her shoulders, scrutinized to perform perfectly even as those around her sabotaged her effort, pushed into a position too fast, and without proper gener specific integration, she still succeeded. That's the story. The truth sets you free.

It's readily available to anyone who cares to find out the Navy held at least the first batch of female pilots to a lower standard than the men. Hultgren died because of that nonsense, being pushed into something she wasn't ready for. At least the other pilots that were pushed through were grounded before they had fatal accidents. Anyone who gets pushed into a position that didn't have to earn it like everyone else did is going to deal with negativity from questions like "Are you good enough to be here?". Standards exist for a reason, like keeping the accident and failure rate low, and something that needs to always be maintained for everyone's safety.

Hultgren died because her left engine malfunctioned while attempting a carrier landing. Unfortunately, as she tried to eject, her aircraft was inverted, launching her directly into the sea at terminal velocity. Her death had nothing to do with her skill as an aviator or because she wasn't ready, or capable, of handling the aircraft in a superior manner. This episode literally states that the Navy held women to higher standards than men as Lohrenz was grounded for performance that male aviators with similar ratings were not penalized for. Your assertion is that female aviators did not earn their wings "like everyone else" is incredulous.

Flew F-14 ? Congratulations lady . When i was young i was in a summercamp (EBWE) learning to fly a glider . From our group of people , mixed young , old , male , female i thought of myself as the best one , sharp and ready . We were getting ready to fly solo , and then one day a very beautiful young lady , was the first one to go fly solo . I was shocked . I could not understand how this young girl , with the looks of a fotomodel , very female , whom i respected as a person but not so much as a pilot , could have beaten me into being first to solo . That day my vision of the world changed . I couldn't grasp it , but there it was . This female person flew better than me , and proved it . Although i had bitten the dust , i had an enormous respect for that achievement . And i still have , for all females who fly . In the summercamp the next ones to solo were myself and also again another young lady . That time was a nice experience for me , as well as the flying as well as the personal life lessons learned . Flew F-14 , or any jet ? Congratulations , male or female . Erwin , Belgium .

The comment that "people" didn't think women should be flying fighters is completely untrue. I went through F-14 pilot training in 1995 and I know FIRST HAND that the Tomcat community strongly supported women in the cockpit. What we did not support was unqualified or underperforming candidates pushed through the training pipeline and held to a much lower standard than their male counterparts, simply to satisfy some gender quota. No one wants to hear the reality...No one cares if you're a man, a woman, black, white or purple or from Mars. All that matters is can you do the job? If the answer is yes, you are welcomed into the community with open arms. If they answer is no, its time to go b/c around the carrier at night, and flying in combat you simply can't fake it. Chair-sitters and politicians will never understand that fact. Those of us who've faced the crucible and unforgiving nature of the CV / TACAIR environment understand this truth all too well....And just for the record Ward Carrol is NOT a Tomcat pilot. He's a RIO and has zero credibility to speak about what its like to fly the F-14.
