Typical four at a time flying geese math starts with some specific measurements for the squares-- 3 7/8 or 6 3/8. But what if you have a stack of 4" squares sitting there! Don't trim 1/8" off each one--thats boring! Instead, let's rework the math to make flying geese with the squares you have. They will end up some funky/weird sizes at the end but thats ok! If you are going to sew them all together, they don't have to be a specific size, just all the same size!
If you want to trim them down to a specific size to match up with other blocks, I recommend the Creative Grids Flying Geese Trim Tool: amzn.to/3B9ZOp1

Super useful and important block. Flying Geese show up in a huge number of quilt patterns, even at the confident beginner level. The first best day of my quilting experience was when i learned to make usable flying geese. coming in second was learning the 4 at a time method. Thanks for walking us through the math to allow our scraps to become flying geese.

❤❤❤❤❤❤. So very helpful. Thank you. All,of the “ helpful “ charts don’t list those lovely precuts. 10” , 5” squares. I asked on many FB quilting pages & was going loopy as no one came up with your clean clear method. Happy day.

I LOVE the math lesson! Knowing the how is so empowering! I am now making flying geese that are 21x10 3/4 and they are amazing! I just figured out the biggest square I could easily cut from my fabric and then did the math to create the small squares. Just the lesson I needed to get started on this project that has been in my head for months. Thank you!!!!!

Currently I use every potential scrap and do random piecing in between projects. The larger sized items go right back with other same sized filed yardage to make for scrappy quilt block supplies. I'm thinking I need a goose box for all I now make from this video. Happy quilting 🇦🇺💜🇺🇸💚🥰💯👍

Thanks for such a great exposition of quilty math. I do this exercise too and create spread sheet tools to give me instant sizing capabilities. I made myself do this for LeMoyne star component calculations too. That made my head hurt. This approach helps quilters understand the relationship of components to each other. By demystifying so many options are available without having to rely on someone else.
