If you wanted to know about the flying geese block, this is where you should start. We start the basics , one-at-time methoed and the 4-at-a-time NO WASTE method and then move to more advanced versions by using your fabrics the best way possible. And I have another sewing hack with masking tape at the end to make the trimming easier. I use the Omnigrid ½” ruler to mark the sewing lines. See link below to get yours. I’ve been quilting for years and apparently have never made a flying geese (goose). For a guild quilt challenge I was assigned the King’s Crown block. After fussing with the geese that weren’t flying at all, I decided to get on you tube for help. This was the first video to pop up! LOVE your simple methodology to making (4) at a time. And NOW my geese have the extra fabric on top so I don’t lose my point when sewn together. THANK YOU! 😊 You made my frustration disappear.

It's been 3 months since you made this video, but it just showed up on my KZfaq stream today! By sewing from the back, you've solved the problem of not having the 1/4" seam allowance needed at the top of the goose! I looked on line and in books for days to try to figure out what I was doing wrong and how to correct it. That problem held up my quilt till now when you solved it with this video.. THANK YOU!

Maureen Smith Hahahaha ... I'm sort of a newbie to quilt piecing, but have been sewing for around 55 years. I'm like Karen - embarrassed at how small of a scrap I will keep if they are already right-sides-together and ready to sew. Then again, if I don't want to save some, they go into a container for use as pet bed stuffing.

Valerie Bishop I had a good (albeit silent) chuckle when I read your comment about FGs coming out good being a crap shoot. Our state capitol grounds have a pond which a local population of Canada Geese call home year 'round. One has to be VE-E-E-R-R-Y careful when walking to and from the capitol building and over to the memorials built along the shore of the pond to avoid all the goose crap on the lawn and sidewalks. I may never sew another FG without thinking about this ;) .

I so look forward to your videos! You bring such joy to my day. I am 83 years old, love fabric, and just beginning to quilt so I am still in the scrap, strip, and not matching seams stage. Yet, I love watching your more advanced videos even though I likely will never be able to master the techniques and probably won’t even try. Being precise is not in my DNA! Still I watch many of your videos over and over to stir up my quilting juices.

A must watch for intermediate and/or a beginner quilter. First time I’ve ever seen such detailed design info shared in such easy to follow & professional way as this video. See how FG block construction can create a focal point in any block. Adjust alignment of print pattern or rotation within stitch placement will alter the block and get that “WOW factor” in your quilt. Use prints that are: One way, rotational, stripes, mirror image, etc. some fabric print options. You will never automatically avoid a print, ever again. Tons of visual examples! Bonus: How to make a trimming tool for FG using blocks you may already own.

Hi Karen, I just finished listening to your blog about your progress on your paper piecing project, and making BLUE QUILTS!!! I keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. Thank God for the good news for your son, what a HUGE relief. I'm glad that you showed us that every time you went in to sew you ended up doing other things. It happens to me often also. But in the end it helps me get mentally ready for my next thing. What ever that is. I feel better after I've done some of these non-sewing things. Karen, I think you need a mental health break. You go at things so hard. Can you and a friend or 2 go have a weekend away? Just go poking around some odd little stores. Maybe just take yourself out for some poking around and some lunch. Where you sit DOWN to order, bring a new pattern to go over or a book. Just leave in the morning, knowing you have dinner set for the guys at home. ( I think you said your husband cooks) and walk around after lunch, read your book and do NOTHING MORE THAN WHAT CAN HELP YOU, KAREN HAVE A SIMPLE DAY FOR YOURSELF. I admire you very much, long before your world got turned upside down. You need to take a few breaks, I'm saying this because of the change in you. You are a wonderful person, your style of teaching is very coherent, like you've been a teacher your whole life. But now you're pressed, I want the best for you and your family. One day I'll write why I started to quilt. I hope that all of you stay safe from this Covid 19 and your son continues to get better. May God Bless you and your family, Debbie

Awesome video! I love the ruler hack for trimming the flying geese! You are basically making your own bloc loc ruler!!! I also appreciate the fact that you say to sew just to the side of the line. Everyone always says sew right on the line and as someone who is teaching herself to quilt, I figured that out on my own. Love, love your tutorials. Stay safe and keeping your family in my prayers.
