Very nice chart played expertly by the band. Doc's solo starts low/mid range with his usual big sound. In one spot (around 4:45) he uses alternate fingerings to color the same note. Rock-solid solo. The arrangement is by Dick Lieb. Other soloists include:
Ross Tompkins, piano
Eugene "Snooky" Young, trumpet
Bruce Paulson, trombone

I love that Johnny put Freddy DiCordiva in his place. Johnny knew the value of this band and he wasn't going to let Freddy frack it up.

I know! I started listening to the Tonight Show band in the mid 1960's. When I was in college, away from a TV (i.e. the olden days), I found out I could pick up the audio at the bottom of my FM radio band because it was on channel 6 in that area. So I listed as much as I could. That made for 30 years of wonderful big band (and solo trumpet) playing available FOR FREE!

None of the Tonight Shows after Johnny have been worth a damn - not funny, & musically vapid. For 30 years late-night television had something we'll never, ever see again!

Carson one of the few who showcase jazz on his show. He had Dizzy Gillespie on one evening to lead the band with a tune, it was unbelievable.

Johnny's warm relationship, and admiration for Doc was touching. And, btw, that Tonight Show Jazz Orchestra, was absolutely devastating. Absolute heavy hitters, top to bottom. I always wished though, that Doc would have played in the staff more. He had absurd range, but it seemed like that's pretty much all he did sometimes, and there was a lot more to his skill than that.

There’s officially 4 Tonight Show Band albums: The first one, Vol. 2, Once More With Feeling, & the Christmas album. Unofficially, there Swingin’ The Blues, credited to Doc Severinsen & His Big Band. It’s basically most of the T.S. Band musicians reuniting, after the Johnny Carson era ended.

Thanks, David! I still listen the their two albums regularly. Everyone always thought it was a shame the band wasn’t featured more. I often wondered if Johnny and the producers really knew what they had. What a rare and special thing it was to have a band like that made up of the best guys in town. Something like that will likely never happen again.

Johnny loved big band jazz and he appreciated this band. At one time, the bean counters at NBC wanted to cut some members from the band to save money. Johnny said no way, if you do that, I quit. So, the musician's jobs were saved.

As the 1980's ended and the 1990's entered, Music tastes had dramatically changed. This is why Jay Leno's version of the show featured groups during the last segment rather than in the middle of the show because people would tune out if they did not like the music.

I met Johnny Carson back in 1966 or so-I also met someone who played Trumpet in the band-with long blonde hair-and had been prior with Chicago--or Chicago Transit Authority--he reminds me of the Brunson Brothers-i can't recall his name but he was great on the trumpet and a very nice guy-just like the current Brunson Brothers-anyone recognize this person-could it have been the father of the Brunson Brothers-currently in the news???
