We're in Aspen, it's IFR, and our transponder stopped working. On top of that, Aspen's primary radar is out of service. How can we get home? With some help from ATC, and the FARs.
Bose sponsored this video. Without them, it wouldn't have been possible.

Great video...recently had a large area Radar outage last month east bound out of Texarkana...was issued Victor Airways in my clearance including even over flat land in VMC conditions a 5 mile west vector to TXK VOR. Shortly after departure I was cleared direct HLI (237NM east). When I asked them to confirm they replied "Oh we have your ADSB out position and altitude." For the next hour or so of my flight I got to listen to the other IFR aircraft make position and altitude reports while I monitored traffic on my Foreflight App. Early compliance with an out and in ADSB transponder was the best thing our Club has done since purchasing a Garmin 430 and Aspen 1000 several years ago.

To a kid whos never been on a plane in his life but is interested in aviation methods this was more than enlightening. I imagine most people just think planes fly direct lines wherever their going and thanks not only to the history lesson in this video but the amazing graphics and editing I now have a much greater understanding of VFR flying and what goes into it. It makes aviation videos more interesting and I am truly greatful for those in the aviation field who make videos like these. If I ever have a desire and ability to actually get licensed to fly Ill have a much better idea of what to expect. Thank you for the video!

This flight was filed IFR, not VFR, and followed IFR rules during flight under mostly VFR conditions (pretty scenery). Once Denver ATC took over, the final was technically IFR but wasn't the full IFR approach (with glideslope and runway lights, etc...)

Just discovered your channel. Very well done. I owned two different SR22s over a ten year span and thoroughly enjoyed flying them into Aspen a couple times per year. The SR22 is a fantastic machine. Your video brought back good memories. The failed transponder was a real world problem that you solved with good risk assessment and an understanding of the FARs. Very instructive. Thank you!

Learning "ATC" slang isn't hard at all, but some of those guys accents are murder. Sometimes you wanna say to a particular ATC controller "Take the marbles out of your mouth.., dude." (I'm mostly referring to international controllers)

Always enjoy your vids and your production is getting better each time. Since my preference is to listen to the atc comm and see the navigation I found the background music on this one was distracting though. Esp around the 13:35 mark Maybe a little softer so the ATC audio is more clear, or perhaps a different style from the rhythmic base.

Having lived and flown in Colorado for 20 years, I definitely enjoyed the video. I didn't see any display of the I-PTK LOC for the back course segment of the LINDZ departure. Did I miss it?
@Boldmethod
@Boldmethod 7 жыл бұрын
Good question, we were using GPS nav, so we weren't actually using the PTK LOC, but departure sent us direct to the Red Table VOR before we got to that part of the LINDZ8 departure.
@midlifeflyer
@midlifeflyer 7 жыл бұрын
Boldmethod, that's the reason I asked. The LINDZ departure includes an intercept of the LOC back course. At 9:32 I hear "turning to intercept." I assume that meant the I-PKN back course, which it seems you don't have. LOC courses are one of the very few remaining things you can't substitute with GPS. Good for one of your quizzes.
