I'm looking forward to you getting your 7 done, you will love it! So much fun in places like this- just as you suspect. His 6 does really well. Partially because it's very light, and has a huge wing.. but I'm always impressed with that thing. Especially down at low elevation of course. My 7 is fancy with all the special mods, and will of course do more, especially up high...but that old 6 just keeps on going places...hard to beat it bang for the buck wise.

glad to! you could camp there on the sand bar.. and all the strips we landed at of course as well.. some of the really wild (beautiful) areas we flew over with the big monuments and such are areas you cannot legally land... but a great deal of utah is accessible to land and camp which is amazing! aviation seems very welcomed in Utah! Idaho is the same way.... where I am in Colorado not so much unfortunately. we do have a fair bit of public land in CO.. but Utah and Nevada really are the mecca of public land you can access by plane (and other ways) and enjoy...

Having two airplanes there is probably the best way to get out initially. He carries as spot, and I have a garmin inreach for all out emergencies. I have two batteries onboard to hopefully ensure I can start mine. But no doubt about it, there is a risk landing in a place like that. It could get expensive if something major goes wrong! Shoot, even a lot of these strips in the Utah backcountry don't have vehicle access (like Idaho). Part of why we chose a large sandbar too, there was some small ones that would have been fun, but less room if we both have to ride out in 1 plane or have to call a friend in for help etc.

@@GravityKnightFlying Thank you for the reply. I pretty much knew you had some contingency plans. I really enjoy your videos detailing your mechanical skills as well as the flying. Your plane is well suited to the type of flying you are doing. I think we would all enjoy seeing more details of the numbers related to the altitude and density altitude, VSI, etc. As an East Coast pilot I can barely imagine what it must be like to fly out West. Thanks again!

Good question David. I haven't ruled it out. That type of question has come up a few times, and I have kind of been mulling it over. Not being an instructor, none of it would be official, and I'd have to be careful to not cross any lines. Plus, I am confident in what I can do with my own plane, but leading others into situations they may or may not be good with...definitely some worry there. Probably would be no big deal and a good time, but I figure I should think through all the negative possibilities before doing anything like that. -Todd

Go overkill on maintenance, hope for a nice sandbar! There was a lot of them actually. When over the really rough stuff we kept some altitude, although I’m not sure it would matter much. Pretty rough terrain... no risk no reward though in some of these places.

Being turbocharged makes a massive difference up high. My old bird did ok with a big bore..but this one rips up high... its more money, more tinkering, more attention needed, but the performance can't be beat! Edge has the best setup for the Rotax and Yamahas currently.

@@ianh3007 Hey no problem... just to give you an idea, I was tuning boost the other day up high. Working around a fixed pitch prop, you can only run so much boost up high. So I had to turn it down as I go up. At 16,000ft, with the boost reduced to not exceed redline, it was still holding around 1100ft /min climb. Not at gross weight, but not light either.. an average, realistic weight you could say. Cheers!

Dang those are good numbers. Good stuff to keep in mind. I know a bit amount about turbo'd engines up in altitude. Im a heavy diesel, snowcat, snowmobile mechanic up here. Id love to own and maintain my own plane as well. Just started my private pilots training!
