After a night’s rest at one of only two hotels in Lokichogio, we head further South through Kenya towards Samburu. Here we meet up with the research team at Save the Elephants, to learn more about their efforts in combating the rise of Human Elephant Conflict in surrounding regions. We are welcomed by Paul, who is the full time pilot and aviation coordinator, and the one showing us the ropes in conservation patrol flying.
This is episode 8 of the Long way South Series; a 6-week journey flying the new Sling High Wing aircraft from The Netherlands to South-Africa.

I love how this video series changed from being "just" a ferry flight, towards a comprehensive documentary about african wildlife and all the things around operating to and from african airports.

You are such a conscientious pilot. During your elephant flights, seeing your eyes consistently watching your airspeed & altimeter while configured for slow flight speaks volumes! You both enjoyed the moments but also never forgot you were piloting an aircraft. I hope lots of young or want-to-be pilots pay attention to this!

Thanks once again for another great video. The conservation project and team is fantastic and it's great watching you both respectfully listen to them and adapt to the work they're doing. Those low and slow passes looked great but nervewracking with minimal landing options and as for that last flypast lol how low could you go!? 😬😂

Next time, please do The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. They rescue orphaned elephants and rehabilitate them,... then take them to Ithumba in Tsavo where they re-integrate them into nature.

I am glad you enjoyed your time in my country. It was awesome hearing you say that you will never forget your experience here. That's what Kenyan wildlife is --- unforgettable. You have great aerial spotting skills! So many elephants. I would highly recommend you visit Nanyuki (it's northeast of Nairobi) and check out Tropic Air. They use the Cessna Caravans and they also do some awesome work with the Airbus H125 and H130 helicopters. Will you guys be landing at Wilson Airport in Nairobi?

Yep Low and Slow is my Meat as well. I rarely flew higher than 2,500 feet AMSL. Of course any passenger always wanted to fly as low as legally allowed over their house. Those elephants looked hard to spot to me so it's good that you red ringed them for us. I have said it before and I'll say it again Youse guys are having way too much fun. Regards, Jim in NI UK

I visited Smaburu way back in 1995, Poaching was a big problem then so when we ent out on game drive we had 2 guards along armed with rifles! luckily there was no need for the weapons to be used.

I just started watching the series a few days ago. I'm not up to speed yet, but the journey looks like suuuuch fun!! And I'm so happy you guys got to fly over Slovenia. Being one of the most forested countries in the EU, I'd say it's more interesting to see from ground-level, but I'm glad you included us in your tour, even if unplanned :) I'm looking forward for seeing the rest of the trip once I catch up with the previous episodes. Is sling going to give you guys a good deal on a new- newer plane. I think they should. I would like to no just how many planes they've sold just because of these vids. 🤷🏼‍♂️. Write me back and tell me what you think. I no you said you want to fly other planes for maybe the UN or something. But I wish you'd go to the air lines. You work 2 weeks a month. And make a ton of money. The time your off you could do all your fun flying. Your so smart and versatile you can do anything.
