About SUN-AIR of Scandinavia (from Wikipedia):
SUN-AIR of Scandinavia A/S, usually shortened to SUN-AIR, is a Danish regional airline headquartered in Billund, with its main base at Billund Airport. It operates scheduled services as a franchise of British Airways using their name and corporate design as British Airways - operated by SUN-AIR of Scandinavia A/S. The airline also offers charter flights, air taxi services, specialist aerial work and aircraft brokerage services.
About Fairchild-Dornier 328JET (from Wikipedia):
The Fairchild-Dornier 328JET is a commuter airliner, based upon the turboprop-powered Dornier 328, developed by the German aircraft manufacturer Dornier Luftfahrt GmbH. It would be the last Dornier-designed aircraft to reach production before the company's collapse during the early 2000s.
The 328JET was designed by Dornier in response to negative feedback from some customers on the marketability of turboprops against the more appealing turbofan engine. It was a relatively straightforward re-engining of the existing 328, being originally designated as the 328-300 prior to being rebranded as the 328JET. During 1996, early on in the programme, the financially distressed Dornier company was acquired by the American aerospace firm Fairchild Aircraft; the resulting corporation, named Fairchild Dornier, continued development of the 328JET. On 20 January 1998, the first 328JET prototype conducted its maiden flight.

Danish person here: Billund Airport serves more than half of the danish population. Copenhagen airport is far away from most of the country, so Billund is much closer. It is indeed in a small town, but serves as an airport for multiple of the biggest cities in Denmark. ✌🏼

A similar situation applies to Atlanta's airport - there's no system of airports like there is in LA and London so it's a major reason why that airport is the world's busiest in terms of passenger traffic.

The 328Jet (DoJet) is a lovely aircraft, grossly overpowered for the size making its performance phenomenal. It was already a great aircraft as a prop. I flew on one back in the early 2000s between Boston and JFK when it flew for Delta Connection operated by ACJet (part of Atlantic Coast Airlines) who had a substantial fleet of these. I paid less than you for my flight as I was a member of staff of ACA at the time. We were also supposed to be the launch customer fpr the 428Jet, which of course was cancelled. We were all quite disappointed when the 428 never materialised. I saw some of the training flights for the 328Jet at the airport where I worked and I can tell you with only two pilots on board that thing was a veritable rocket. One time they rotated and shot up at about 30 degrees nose up, not something you see often. Certainly has a lot more character than the CRJs.

All the Dornier aircraft were designed for STOL and short field operations, which brings with it the need for plenty of power. I saw a Dornier test pilot do an unrestricted climb in a 328JET at an air show, and it was quite a sight !

Not tried the MAX yet, it's been closed a couple of times we've come through. The Menzies staff were fantastic last summer when BA lost our luggage. Can't fault them. The border staff could be a little more conversational, especially when I try my hardest to use my pigeon Svenska, but there we go.

I knew about it it was originally a turbo prop changed to jets to enable it to land at London city due to high glide slope angle of 3.3 degrees instead of the standard 3 😊😊😊
@hb1338
@hb1338 11 ай бұрын
The change from 328 to 328JET was due to customer (airline and passenger) preference for turbofan over turboprop engines, and had nothing to do with London City airport (LCY). The glidepath angle at LCY is 5.5 degrees, and there are plans to allow suitable aircraft to use RNAV approaches at 7.5 degrees.

The reason the middle seats in club were released was due to the closure of UK airspace because of a NATS glitch caused by a mis-filed flight plan. The situation should never have occurred but tbh was out of the airline’s control. In extreme circumstances like this BA have a policy to release the middle seat in club to allow as many disrupted passengers to get on their way as possible. But this absolutely should be communicated and you should be entitled to claim some points as compensation for the devalued product.
@hb1338
@hb1338 11 ай бұрын
There is no contractual obligation on either BA or Sun-Air to block the middle seats, because operational contingencies always override passenger convenience. In such circumstances, BA should always offer points automatically - a polite phone call should fix it if they do not do so.

Horizon Air (QX) which is owned by Alaska was the launch customer of the 328Prop. They didn’t like the aircraft and dumped them from the fleet a couple of years later. Billund was built in the Jet era so this is maybe why it is so capable. It’s also one of the few airports in Denmark not built by the Germans in the early 1940s.

I flew the D38 from MKE to GRR and back in 2006. The most interesting thing about its history is that both the turbo prop and jet equipped models carry the same designation, Dornier 328. I can’t think of any other like that, usually they’d at least change the number.

Reminded me immediately of a local to Northwestern Ontario Airline - Bearskin Airlines out of Thunder Bay - they fly Fairchild aircraft exclusively. Only smaller than the 328Jet - they fly the 19 passenger Metroliner. I said the first time I went up in a Cessna, I was a large plane gal, the Metroliner, while a decent flight on a not so turbulent day, just didn't have enough window for me. But then again, I've yet to find one, among the 25 aircraft I've flown on between Newfoundland and Winnipeg over the years, that does give me the amount of window real estate I want when in the air.

It is not a British Airways aircraft, it belongs to Sun-Air (Sun-Air of Scandinavia), which is a Danish regional airline. Sun-Air is a BA franchise - it is a completely separate company from BA, but all its operations use BA branding and livery. Flights use BA codes and appear in all the various booking systems as BA flights. This allows BA to acquire extra passengers for its international flights without the expense and risk of running regional operations itself, and it allows Sun-Air to attract passengers who have onward connections for their flights. BA uses a pricing scheme known as OD (origin and destination), which means that the combination of Sun-Air and BA is usually cheaper than its rivals. The benefits of franchise operations are very much mutual. Unfortunately Sun-Air was hit hard by the pandemic and was forced to scrap all its operations in Germany. It has a very good reputation, so there is reason to be optimistic that it will recover.

I was an FA for Shuttle America for 10 years. I worked on the EMB 170-175. The Dornier 328J though a 1-2 seat configuration was much more spacious then a EMB 134-45 or a CRJ anything. It was a very unique aircraft that I had the pleasure to fly on. @@erik_griswold

Cool report! Got the chance to get onboard the Dornier 328-100 (turboprop variant) a couple of times, as it's the aircraft that Private Wings operate for Audi/ Volkswagen Group. I have taken in it from Ingolstadt (Audi hq) to Braunschweig (VW hq) and Györ (Audi factory in Hungary). They used to have 2x daily and 4-5x weekly respectively, mainly aimed at those in Germany to take day trips to the other sites.

Wtf was that BA Club Europe experience? Apparently they just put someone in the middle seat when they’ve had a cancellation etc. Not acceptable!

Key Lime Air operates as Denver Air Connection out of Denver. They fly the Dornier 328 and a few other random small planes like the Metroliner and E145. They operate services from Denver to tiny airports in the middle of nowhere on EAS routes subsidized by the US federal government. They also codeshare with United and maybe some other airlines to connect people in these small towns to the rest of the country.

There's a royal flight on BAE jet. Four engines, for long haul. It's smaller than an ATR72 or Q400, but four jet engines. Saw one parked in Phnom Penh years ago when I was visiting. Princess Anne was in town,

You saw a BAe146. The four engines were for short field and STOL operation, not for range (which was around 2000 nautical miles). It was, and still is, an excellent aircraft.

Billund is only known as the Logo headquarters, Billund. The problem is that there are no trains going to Billund. The problem is that politicians in Jutland cannot agree on creating a main airport for Aarhus and the airport called Aarhus Airport or Tirstrup Airport is smaller than Billund. Aarhus airport if no one wants to fly from, which also has poor connections to the cities.

If I'm correct the aircraft is a Dornier DO-328? In the beginning it was was developed as a twin turbo-prop but has subsequently been retrofitted with twin turbo-fans. In 1990 I was an Airframe sub-contractor for Dornier down in Friedrichshafen in Southern Germany to build the EMU, Engineering Mock-Up, so there's my acclaim to fame! Pmsl.
