I just got my Tailwheel recurrent in the 170B model and I’ve flown several Tailwheel Aircraft in my years of flying my next one is a L-19 Bird dog or a 180

I’ll be looking forward to practice some wheel landings on the spring gear because once you touch down and one bounce it’s time for a go around
@kobet6
@kobet6 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the spring gear can be fun but is not too unforgiving! I’ve still got the original 170 gear legs on and it’s like flying a Cadillac it’s so soft

What do you set your trim to less back pressure or more forward pressure and your approach airspeed before your flare and of course your flaps
@kobet6
@kobet6 2 жыл бұрын
Depends normally I like 30 degrees of flaps 80 mph approach speed if it’s a paved runway! Makes wheel landings cake

@@kobet6 outstanding. I flew fire patrol for the TX forestry service in 65 and 66 in C140s out of Nacogdoches, TX. The one assigned to me had a 170A wings on it. 8 hrs endurance. Too much time in the air lol.

Does this fly basically like a 172 aside from the tailwheel takeoff and landing characteristics?
@kobet6
@kobet6 9 ай бұрын
Similar though the tailwheel adds some technique ability that the trike will not do and vice a verse

Thanks, I’ve got lots of 172 time and scattered tailwheel time. Is it pretty docile as far as tailwheel goes? I’d like to get a checkout and figure this might be a good one to eventually start tailwheel instructing in as I already instruct in 172s and think stepping up to tailwheel instructing might be easier in a plane I’m more familiar with otherwise and that I can see better out of. But I’ve never flown one and haven’t flown much side by side tailwheel.

The Cessna 170 an aircraft I am not that enthusiastic about. I never was a fan of the 0300 Cont., engines. It was in general an easy tailwheel aircraft to fly and manage. Cruise speed a bit better then a basic 172. It was a good try by Cessna, but there legendary Cessna18O was the light aircraft work hoarse in the industry.

The 170 is a light aircraft as compared to the 180, that is high performance and in a different class, I love the 180 and 185 but they are also not the smaller 170 either, the 170 excels as a teaching platform especially with the 145 hp c145 engine. It gives you enough performance to get you into a lot of places but it makes you work for it! You have to plan for DA, type of runway, and use your skills to get it where you want if you can get there you have to think and fly the wing not the engine and plan accordingly! I wish today they would require pilots to learn on a low hp aircraft that makes you plan! In short I just love all planes and what they have to offer!

If you watch STOL competitions in light and heavy touring… the 170’s and 172’s with the O-300 are dominating over the 180’s/182’s. Furthermore, the O-300 is beating the 220hp Franklin and 180HP Lycoming 170’s/172’s. My guess is that you are hung up on that “low” 145hp number. I’m off and on my grass strip in my 172 in 450’. It’s stock and it’s an O-300.

not sure where your bias is coming from...the O300 is a awesome power plant...smooth..dead on reliable...for the airframe weight 145 hp is fine
